Chennai Transport Hub
Chennai is one of India's easier big-city airport transfers when the metro fits the trip. Chennai International Airport (MAA) has its own Chennai Metro station, suburban rail access through Tirusulam, prepaid taxis, app-based cabs and city buses. The hard part is not finding transport; it is choosing the right system for a city with multiple rail hubs and multiple intercity bus terminals.
The most important first-day names are Chennai International Airport, Chennai International Airport Metro, Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Metro, Chennai Central, Egmore, CMBT Koyambedu and Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus at Kilambakkam. A visitor who mixes those names up can lose more time than the airport transfer itself.
Fast Facts
Chennai International Airport (MAA) is the airport for the city. The airport is at Meenambakkam on the south-west side of Chennai. The AAI transport page says prepaid taxis are available in the ground transportation area, with a prepaid taxi booth in the arrivals hall, and that passengers receive a ticket for the driver before boarding. It also says Ola and Uber cabs can be booked through kiosks located at the airport itself. The same page highlights that Chennai Airport has Metro connectivity as well as suburban rail connection and MTC buses.
Chennai Metro is the best public rail transfer for many visitors. CMRL's Chennai International Airport station page lists Entrance B for Chennai International and Domestic Airport terminals, and Entrance A for Aero Hub Mall, GST Road and Tirusulam rail. The platform information shows service toward Wimco Nagar Depot and toward Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Metro. That makes the metro a real airport-city link, not a remote shuttle.
The metro fare system is official through CMRL. The Commuters Corner links fare table, QR ticket and travel-card recharge information, while the travel planner calculates station-to-station trips. The fare chart uses INR values and shows discounted stored-value/QR-style fares such as INR 8, 16, 24, 32 and 40 that correspond to base fare slabs. For ordinary planning, think in local INR fares and use CMRL's route planner for the exact station pair.
Chennai Central and Egmore are the rail hubs most visitors meet first. Central Metro's official page lists direct access to Chennai Central, MAS suburban rail, Park Town and Park. Egmore Metro's official page lists entrances to Egmore rail. For intercity buses, CMBT at Koyambedu remains a major terminal area, while Kilambakkam's Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus is crucial for many south-bound and state intercity bus services.

MAA Airport Arrivals
Chennai International Airport is one of the better Indian airports for rail-based city access because the metro station is integrated into the airport district. If the hotel is near Central, Egmore, Nandanam, Teynampet, Thousand Lights, Guindy, Alandur, Koyambedu, Anna Nagar or a metro corridor, the metro should be checked before booking a car.
The airport is not one single doorway. Domestic and international terminal access, Aero Hub, taxi pickup, app-cab pickup and metro access can send travellers to different points. Follow official airport signs and app pickup directions rather than relying on a driver calling from outside.
For central Chennai, the metro is often the most predictable option. Traffic can slow the GST Road, Anna Salai, Mount Road, Guindy and Central approaches. The metro avoids much of that. Taxi or app cab is still better for late arrivals, heavy bags, families, hotels away from a station, OMR/IT corridor destinations, beach-side hotels and cross-city trips that would require awkward interchange.
For one-night airport stays, choose Meenambakkam, Tirusulam or airport-area hotels only when flight timing matters. For normal city visits, stay closer to a metro station or the next rail/intercity bus departure point.
Chennai Metro From The Airport
Chennai International Airport Metro is the cleanest airport route for many visitors. CMRL's station page gives practical station details: Entrance B serves the domestic and international terminals, while Entrance A serves Aero Hub Mall, GST Road and Tirusulam rail. The same page lists bus stop access toward Tambaram, Koyambedu and Chennai Central, plus station facilities, lifts, escalators, food, parking and last-mile information.
The airport station is on the Blue Line corridor. A passenger can ride toward Central and onward toward the north of the city. Central Metro is an interchange point for both Blue and Green Line movement. Alandur is another important interchange for the Green Line toward St. Thomas Mount and the CMBT/Koyambedu side.
For Chennai Central, use the metro to Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Metro. The official Central Metro page lists entrances for Chennai Central, MAS suburban rail, Park Town, Park, Ripon Building and other nearby landmarks. This is the key link for long-distance rail passengers who land at MAA and need Central.
For Egmore, use CMRL routing to Egmore Metro. The official Egmore page lists entrances to Egmore rail. This is the better rail hub for many south-bound and central Tamil Nadu trains, depending on the specific Indian Railways ticket.
Metro Fares And Payment
CMRL publishes the fare table, travel planner, QR ticket and travel-card information in its Commuters Corner. Use those official tools for the exact station pair. The fare chart with 20 percent discount shows values such as INR 8, INR 16, INR 24, INR 32 and INR 40 for discounted fare categories, which reflects the common base-fare logic of INR 10 to INR 50 before discount.
For airport planning, do not use old foreign-currency benchmarks. Use INR and the CMRL planner. A short city ride may be cheap, while a long airport-to-north-Chennai ride may sit in the upper fare slabs. The important point is that metro fare is usually far lower than taxi fare, especially for solo travellers.
CMRL also operates timetables and station information pages. Before a very early or late airport trip, check the timetable page rather than assuming the metro covers the flight time. If the flight lands after metro service or if the traveller has large bags, use prepaid taxi, Ola, Uber or a pre-booked hotel transfer.
The metro is not the same as Chennai suburban rail or MRTS. The airport area also has Tirusulam rail access, and Central/Egmore connect with Indian Railways and suburban services. Keep ticket systems separate.
Central, Egmore And Suburban Rail
Chennai Central is the primary long-distance rail hub for many north, west and intercity routes. The connected metro stop is Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Metro. CMRL's Central Metro page lists Chennai Central, MAS suburban rail and Park/Park Town access, making it a true multimodal point.
Egmore is another major rail hub and should not be treated as a minor local stop. Southern Railway has active redevelopment works for Chennai Egmore, and CMRL's Egmore Metro page lists direct entrances to Egmore rail. Many trains toward southern Tamil Nadu, central Tamil Nadu and regional corridors may use Egmore rather than Central.
Suburban rail and MRTS matter for local Chennai geography. Tirusulam rail is near the airport; Park, Park Town and Central connect around the core; St. Thomas Mount is a key multimodal point for metro, suburban rail and MRTS. In 2026, Chennai's MRTS Velachery-St. Thomas Mount extension context is important for south-side trips, but a visitor should still check the operating timetable for the exact date and service.
For Indian Railways, the station code on the ticket controls the trip. MAS usually points to Chennai Central, MS to Chennai Egmore, and other Chennai-area stations may appear depending on the train. Do not tell a taxi driver only “rail station”; show the exact station name and code.
CMBT, Kilambakkam And Intercity Buses
Chennai intercity bus travel changed meaningfully with Kilambakkam. Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (KCBT) at Kilambakkam is now a critical south-side intercity intercity bus terminal. The CMDA press release on Kilambakkam highlights last-mile connectivity measures from KCBT to the rest of the city, including MTC bus services, intermediate para-transit and suburban rail connectivity work.
CMBT at Koyambedu remains important. CMDA's official CMBT page describes the terminal area, its large bus-parking capacity and facilities. CMBT is also directly linked to the metro through the CMBT/Koyambedu metro corridor, which is useful for travellers staying on the Green Line or connecting from the airport through Alandur.
The practical rule is directional and operator-specific. South-bound SETC/TNSTC and many Tamil Nadu services may involve Kilambakkam. Some routes, private operators, city buses and other services may still use Koyambedu/CMBT or other pickup points. Always check the operator ticket, terminal name, platform/bay and pickup landmark.
TNSTC's online booking portal is the starting point for state bus tickets. For private operators, use the operator ticket and map pin, because pickup points can be roadside or office-based rather than inside a large terminal.
Taxi, Ola And Uber
The official AAI Chennai airport taxi page gives the most important airport rule: use the prepaid taxi booth in the arrivals hall, pay there, receive the ticket and hand it to the driver. It also says Ola and Uber can be booked through airport kiosks. That is more useful than a generic fare table because airport pickup rules change by terminal and operator.
Uber's MAA pickup page says riders should request a ride when ready to walk outside, choose a ride option, and confirm the terminal so the driver knows where to find them. Uber's MAA taxi page notes that there is no flat rate in the app and that the price is shown at the beginning of the trip, with possible adjustment if surcharges or tolls differ from the upfront estimate.
For planning, use broad local bands rather than pretending every airport ride has one fare. MAA to Central/Egmore often falls around INR 500 to INR 900 by app cab or prepaid taxi depending on traffic, vehicle type, tolls, time and pickup. MAA to T. Nagar, Nungambakkam, Mylapore or Adyar may sit in a similar or slightly different band. MAA to OMR, ECR, Kilambakkam or far suburbs can be much higher. The live app quote or prepaid counter receipt controls the final fare.
Auto-rickshaws are useful for short last-mile trips, but not ideal as the first airport transfer with bags. If using an auto, confirm the fare or app price before starting. At rail and intercity bus terminals, app cab pickup may require walking to a designated pickup point; leave time for that rather than assuming door-front pickup.
MTC, City Buses And Last Mile
MTC buses fill many gaps that metro does not cover. The airport station page lists bus stop access toward Tambaram, Koyambedu and Chennai Central from the airport metro area. Kilambakkam connectivity also relies heavily on MTC and feeder services while rail integration improves.
For visitors, city buses are best for budget local movement when the route is direct and luggage is light. They are less comfortable for a first airport transfer with suitcases, especially during peak heat or rain. Use buses for known point-to-point movements, not as the default answer to every arrival.
Chennai's last-mile pattern is mixed. Metro solves the long corridor, then auto, taxi, app cab, walk or bus solves the final two kilometres. This is especially true for Mylapore, Adyar, Besant Nagar, OMR, ECR, T. Nagar side streets and hotel clusters away from stations.
Best Areas To Stay
Stay near Central only if the trip is rail-heavy, short or connected to a north-side itinerary. It is efficient for train departures and airport metro access, but it is not the most relaxed leisure base.
Stay near Egmore or Nungambakkam for a balance between rail access, central neighborhoods and easier movement toward museums, offices and central hotels. Egmore is especially useful when the Indian Railways ticket uses MS.
Stay near T. Nagar, Nandanam, Teynampet or Thousand Lights if shopping, business and central metro access matter. These areas work well with the airport metro corridor and app-cab backup.
Stay near Mylapore, Alwarpet, Adyar or Besant Nagar for culture, food and coastal neighborhoods. These areas may need taxi/app rides for the last mile, even if the main airport leg uses metro.
Stay near Guindy, Alandur or airport-side corridors for quick MAA access, industrial/business visits, or Green Line/Blue Line interchange logic. Stay near OMR only when the IT corridor is the reason for the trip; airport and central rail transfers can be traffic-sensitive.
Stay near Kilambakkam only for very specific long-distance bus timing. It is not a general Chennai sightseeing base.
Step-By-Step Arrival Plans
For MAA to Chennai Central, follow signs to Chennai International Airport Metro, use the Blue Line toward Central/Wimco Nagar direction, and exit at Central Metro. Follow official signs for Chennai Central or MAS suburban rail.
For MAA to Egmore, use CMRL routing from Airport to Egmore Metro. Egmore Metro has entrances to Egmore rail, so this is a cleaner route than negotiating a taxi in traffic when luggage is manageable.
For MAA to CMBT/Koyambedu, use metro with interchange at Alandur where appropriate, or use taxi/app cab if the route timing is poor. CMBT is a metro-linked terminal area, which is the main advantage over distant intercity bus pickups.
For MAA to Kilambakkam KCBT, compare app cab, MTC/feeder route and any current rail/metro-plus-road connection. Kilambakkam is south of the core, and it is not the same as CMBT. Leave extra time if catching a state bus.
For late arrivals, use prepaid taxi, Ola, Uber or a hotel transfer. The metro is excellent when operating, but it is not the right answer if service has ended or the final hotel is far from a station.
Common Mistakes
The first mistake is sending every airport passenger to a taxi. Chennai Metro is often better for Central, Egmore, Alandur, Guindy and many corridor hotels.
The second mistake is mixing Central and Egmore. They are different rail hubs with different train codes and metro connections.
The third mistake is mixing CMBT and Kilambakkam. Koyambedu and KCBT solve different intercity bus routing problems, and many south-bound services have shifted logic toward Kilambakkam.
The fourth mistake is using old foreign-currency fare tables. Chennai fares should be checked in INR through CMRL, prepaid counter receipts and live app quotes.
The fifth mistake is ignoring last mile. Metro can get close, but the final auto, walk, bus or cab may decide whether the route is practical with luggage.
