Dubai is a metro-and-taxi city with two Dubai airport codes, a strong airport metro at DXB, a separate southern airport at DWC, and intercity buses that matter for Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and some regional trips. The first planning rule is simple: Dubai International Airport (DXB) is the main passenger airport and has Red Line metro access at Terminals 1 and 3; Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) is far south and usually needs road transfer.

For a subway map app audience, Dubai should be explained as Red Line plus Green Line plus Tram rather than a generic “subway.” The Red Line handles DXB Terminals 1 and 3, Deira, BurJuman, Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa, Business Bay, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Marina-side stations, Jabal Ali and Expo 2020. The Green Line handles Creek, Al Jaddaf, BurJuman, Union, Al Ghubaiba, Gold Souq and old-Dubai areas. Dubai Tram connects Dubai Marina and JBR with Palm Monorail access nearby.

Fast Facts

Dubai International Airport (DXB) is the main airport for most Dubai visitors. Dubai Airports says the Dubai Metro Red Line connects DXB Terminals 1 and 3. The official metro page lists Red Line airport operating hours from early morning to midnight or later depending on weekday.

Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), also called Dubai World Central, is a separate airport in the south near Dubai South and Expo-side districts. It is not the same transfer as DXB. If the flight ticket says DWC, plan a road transfer or specific bus/taxi route rather than using the DXB metro logic.

Dubai Metro fares use nol card zones. RTA’s nol fare page explains that fares depend on travel across seven zones and can be paid from nol e-purse. Standard Silver nol planning commonly starts around AED 3 for one-zone/short trips, AED 5 for two adjacent zones and AED 7.5 for longer cross-zone trips. Gold class costs more.

RTA’s nol product page lists a Silver card at AED 25 including AED 19 e-purse value. This is usually the easiest visitor card for metro, tram and buses. Red tickets can work for very short stays, but a Silver nol card is cleaner for multi-day travel.

Airport taxi planning should use AED. RTA and Dubai Taxi pages list airport taxi starting fares at AED 20 for normal airport taxis and AED 25 for vans, with a per-kilometre rate listed by Dubai Taxi at AED 2.62. For DXB to Downtown Dubai, use AED 60 to AED 100 as a practical planning band before checking meter, Careem or Uber quote.

DXB Airport Arrival Strategy

DXB is the airport code most visitors need. Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 have Red Line metro access. Terminal 2 does not use the same direct metro setup, so Terminal 2 arrivals should compare taxi, bus or a road transfer to a metro station.

Use the Red Line when staying near Deira, BurJuman, Union, Downtown Dubai, Business Bay, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Marina/JLT-side stations, Jabal Ali or Expo-side areas. It avoids traffic and is much cheaper than taxi, especially for solo travellers with manageable luggage.

Use taxi, Careem, Uber or hotel transfer when arriving late, travelling with children, staying in Jumeirah Beach, The Palm, old-city hotels away from stations, villa districts, resort clusters or places where the final walk in heat is unpleasant.

For Downtown Dubai, the metro station name is Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, but the walk to the mall or hotel can still be long. For Dubai Marina and JBR, metro plus tram may work, but taxi can be worth it with bags.

For DXB to old Dubai, use the Red Line to Union or BurJuman and switch to Green Line where needed. For DXB to Mall of the Emirates, stay on the Red Line. For DXB to Expo City, use the Red Line toward Expo 2020 and check whether the final site needs a shuttle or taxi. These route names are more reliable than “city centre,” because Dubai has several visitor centres spread along a long corridor.

For airport arrivals, the best Dubai decision is often made by counting bags and walking minutes, not only by comparing fares. DXB Terminals 1 and 3 are excellent for Red Line users, but Terminal 2, Palm Jumeirah resorts, JBR beachfront hotels and villa districts can make a taxi or Careem the cleaner first ride. A solo traveller near Union, BurJuman, Business Bay or Mall of the Emirates will usually save money on metro; a family landing late with resort luggage may save time and stress by paying for door-to-door road transfer.

DWC And Other Airports

DWC is Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central. It is useful for certain airlines, cargo, future expansion and Dubai South-area trips, but it is not a DXB-style metro arrival. If the ticket says DWC, check road transfer, RTA bus options and taxi quote before booking the hotel.

Sharjah International Airport (SHJ) can be cheaper or better for some flights, but transfer to Dubai is a cross-emirate road trip. Use taxi, bus or hotel transfer depending on timing and luggage. Traffic between Sharjah and Dubai can be severe.

Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport (AUH) matters for some UAE itineraries. Etihad Long-distance bus and intercity buses can connect Abu Dhabi and Dubai, but a Dubai hotel stay after an AUH arrival needs a real transfer plan, not a “near Dubai” assumption.

The correct rule is ticket-code first: DXB, DWC, SHJ and AUH are different transfer plans. Do not book Dubai transport until the airport code is confirmed.

Dubai Metro Red And Green Lines

Dubai Metro has two main lines for visitors: Red and Green. Red is the airport, Sheikh Zayed Road and marina-side line. Green is the creek, old-Dubai and Deira/Bur Dubai line. BurJuman and Union are major interchange stations.

The Red Line is the first line for DXB Terminal 1, DXB Terminal 3, Deira, BurJuman, Emirates Towers, Financial Centre, Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, Business Bay, Mall of the Emirates, Sobha Realty, DMCC, Jabal Ali and Expo 2020. It is the line most tourists use repeatedly.

The Green Line is best for Al Ghubaiba, Gold Souq, old Dubai, Creek-side routes, Al Jaddaf and Deira/Bur Dubai movement. It is important for long-distance bus and abra-style old-city trips because Al Ghubaiba is a transport cluster.

Metro is excellent, but station access matters. Dubai stations can be far apart, and summer heat makes a 15-minute walk feel much longer. Check the final hotel entrance, not only the nearest station name.

Dubai Tram serves Dubai Marina and JBR-side movement and links with Red Line stations around Sobha Realty and DMCC via tram connections. It is useful for JBR hotels, Marina hotels, Media City, Mina Seyahi and Palm access logic.

Palm Monorail is separate from RTA metro fares and runs onto Palm Jumeirah. It is useful for Atlantis, Nakheel Mall and Palm attractions, but it should not be treated like an included metro leg unless the ticket product explicitly covers it.

For DXB to JBR, use Red Line plus tram if luggage is manageable and the hotel is near a tram stop. For DXB to The Palm, compare Red Line plus tram/monorail with direct taxi or Careem. For families or resort luggage, taxi is often simpler.

For Marina and JLT, DMCC and Sobha Realty are the key Red Line-side stations. For beach hotels, always check whether the station is walkable in heat.

RTA Buses And Intercity Routes

RTA buses fill gaps that metro does not cover. They matter for some airport terminal moves, neighbourhoods away from metro, and intercity travel to Abu Dhabi or Al Ain. Use the official RTA app, route pages or journey planner before relying on a bus.

RTA’s intercity e-ticketing page lists key routes including E101 between Ibn Battuta and Abu Dhabi station, E102 between Jafliya and Musaffah/Abu Dhabi airport, E100 between Al Ghubaiba and Abu Dhabi station, and E201 between Al Ghubaiba and Al Ain station. These are the main public-coach style links visitors should know.

Al Ghubaiba is important for old-Dubai buses, Green Line access and intercity routes. Ibn Battuta is important for Abu Dhabi-side movement from the south-west of Dubai. Jafiliya matters for some Abu Dhabi airport or Musaffah links.

For Abu Dhabi, compare RTA intercity bus, Etihad Long-distance bus if flying Etihad, private transfer and rental car. A Dubai-to-Abu Dhabi day trip by public bus is possible, but the first and last kilometres can dominate the schedule.

Taxi, Careem And Uber

Taxis are part of normal Dubai life and are usually reliable. Airport taxis are available at DXB, with RTA/Dubai Taxi starting fares around AED 20 for normal airport taxis and AED 25 for vans. Dubai Taxi lists a per-kilometre rate of AED 2.62 and extra charges for Salik gates or cross-emirate details where applicable.

Careem is the most important local ride-hailing app to prepare, and Uber also operates in Dubai with DXB airport pickup guidance. Use apps for fare visibility, hotel pins, larger vehicles and late-night trips.

For DXB to Downtown Dubai, use AED 60 to AED 100 as a practical taxi planning band. For DXB to Dubai Marina or JBR, use AED 90 to AED 150. For DXB to The Palm, Jumeirah resorts or Expo/Dubai South, check a live quote because distance and tolls matter.

For DWC to central Dubai, expect a much higher road-transfer profile than DXB. A hotel near Expo, Dubai South or Jebel Ali can be sensible for DWC, but a Downtown or Deira hotel turns it into a long taxi ride.

Where To Stay By Transport Need

Stay near Deira, Union or BurJuman for DXB access, old Dubai, Green/Red interchange and lower hotel costs. This is practical for short stays and airport-heavy trips.

Stay near Downtown Dubai or Business Bay for Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and central sightseeing. The Red Line helps, but taxis are still useful for hotels far from station entrances.

Stay near Dubai Marina, JBR or JLT for beach, nightlife and Red Line/tram access. Airport transfer is longer than Deira or Downtown but manageable.

Stay near Palm Jumeirah for resort trips. Plan taxis or Palm Monorail; metro alone is not enough.

Stay near Expo City, Dubai South or Jebel Ali for DWC, events, logistics or south-west business. This area is not the same as central Dubai.

Stay near Al Ghubaiba or Bur Dubai when intercity buses, creek ferries, old-Dubai markets and budget hotels matter. Stay near Ibn Battuta when Abu Dhabi bus access and south-west Dubai are more important than Downtown sightseeing. Stay near the airport only for late arrivals, early departures or short stopovers; for normal sightseeing, choose by metro line and final district.

For a Dubai Subway Map listing, show DXB Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 clearly on the Red Line. Add a note that Terminal 2 is a different transfer situation. Show BurJuman and Union as Red/Green interchanges.

The key visitor labels are Airport Terminal 1, Airport Terminal 3, Union, BurJuman, Al Ghubaiba, Gold Souq, Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, Business Bay, Mall of the Emirates, Sobha Realty, DMCC, Jabal Ali and Expo 2020.

Add Dubai Tram as a connected system for Marina/JBR and Palm Monorail access. Add a fare note that nol zones apply and Gold class costs more. Add a walking note because Dubai station-to-door distances can be large.

Do not describe Dubai Metro as national rail. There is no ordinary visitor-facing intercity railway from Dubai to Abu Dhabi yet; RTA intercity buses and road transfers handle that role.

Fare Planning

Use AED 3 to AED 7.5 for most standard-class nol metro/bus/tram planning depending on zones. Use AED 25 for a Silver nol card purchase including AED 19 e-purse value. Gold class costs double the regular fare.

Use AED 20 to AED 25 airport taxi flagfall and AED 2.62 per kilometre as the official airport taxi benchmark. Use AED 60 to AED 100 for many DXB-to-Downtown taxi plans and AED 90 to AED 150 for DXB-to-Marina/JBR planning.

Use RTA intercity routes for Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. E100, E101, E102 and E201 are the key route numbers to check, but pickup station and operating status should be confirmed before travel.

Use Careem or Uber quotes for final decisions, especially for DWC, The Palm, resorts, late arrivals, families and cross-emirate rides.

Use AED 25 to AED 35 as a planning band for many short central taxi hops, but do not use that for airport or cross-city trips. Salik tolls, airport pickup charges, van taxi flagfall and traffic can move the final fare above a simple distance estimate.

Common Mistakes

The first mistake is confusing DXB and DWC. DXB has Red Line metro access; DWC is a south-side road-transfer airport for most travellers.

The second mistake is assuming Terminal 2 has the same metro convenience as DXB Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.

The third mistake is booking a beach or Palm hotel and expecting metro door-to-door travel. Tram, monorail or taxi may be needed.

The fourth mistake is ignoring nol zones and Gold class fares. The fare depends on zones and cabin class.

The fifth mistake is treating Abu Dhabi as a short city hop. Public buses work, but the total journey needs station access at both ends.
