Qazvin Transport Hub

Qazvin Transport Hub is a city-researched guide for arriving in north-western Iran and choosing between Imam Khomeini International Airport, Mehrabad Airport, Qazvin’s local airfield, Qazvin railway station, Azadegan passenger terminal, Enghelab terminal, Tehran West Terminal, local buses, taxis, Snapp, TAPSI and road routes toward Tehran, Rasht, Zanjan, Tabriz, Hamedan, Takestan and Alamut. Qazvin sits on a strategic corridor: it is close enough to Tehran for frequent rail and road movement, but far enough that airport transfers need a real plan.

The main mistake is to treat the closest airfield as the best passenger airport. Qazvin Airport (GZW/OIIK) exists on the eastern outskirts of the city, but it is not the normal arrival choice for most visitors. Mehrabad Airport (THR) is usually the most relevant airport for Iranian domestic flights. Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) is the main international gateway. Payam (PYK) and Rasht (RAS) can matter in edge cases, but they should not drive the plan unless the flight ticket specifically points there.

Fast Facts

Item Practical details
Best international airport Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA), south-west of Tehran; road distance to Qazvin is roughly 165-170 km
Best domestic airport Mehrabad Airport (THR), west Tehran; useful for domestic flights before a road or rail transfer to Qazvin
Local airfield Qazvin Airport (GZW/OIIK), on the eastern edge of Qazvin; useful as a geographic reference, not as a default scheduled-passenger gateway
Main rail hub Qazvin railway station, in the Rah Ahan area around Montazeri / Rah Ahan streets and Meydan-e Rah Ahan
Main road terminal Azadegan passenger terminal, Boulevard Khorramshahr, Tehran-e Ghadim Square, end of Ayatollah Torabi highway
Secondary road terminal Enghelab terminal, in the south-west side of the city, mainly useful for Takestan-oriented movement
Local app taxis Snapp and TAPSI are the first app choices to test; TAPSI also advertises phone booking via 1630
Local bus fare benchmark Qazvin urban bus card fare was reported rising from 2,600 to 3,200 tomans from Mordad 1404; check current fare display locally

Arrival Strategy

IKA for international flights

For most overseas visitors, Imam Khomeini International Airport is the airport that matters. It is not close to Qazvin, and a direct taxi or private car is a long intercity transfer. Rome2Rio gives the Qazvin to IKA road distance as about 166.8 km, and the public route without a car typically involves train plus bus/metro or another Tehran transfer. That means IKA arrivals should be planned like a regional journey: land, clear immigration, collect bags, then either take a pre-arranged car to Qazvin or move into Tehran’s rail/bus network.

If arriving late at IKA, a direct car can be the simplest option, especially for families or travellers with luggage. If arriving during the day, compare a car with the route via Tehran: airport transport into Tehran, then Tehran rail or West Terminal bus toward Qazvin. The public route can be much cheaper, but it is more tiring if you have just landed from a long-haul flight.

THR for domestic flights

Mehrabad Airport is the practical domestic-flight airport. For a traveller flying from Mashhad, Shiraz, Isfahan, Ahvaz, Bandar Abbas or another Iranian city, THR plus Qazvin rail/bus can be cleaner than trying to force a regional airport. Kupi’s Mehrabad guide describes it as primarily domestic, and this matches how the airport is used in most Iran itineraries.

The easiest THR-to-Qazvin plan is often taxi/app ride to Tehran West Terminal or a Tehran rail point, then bus or train to Qazvin. A private car from Mehrabad to Qazvin may make sense when arrival is late, the group is larger, or the hotel is outside central Qazvin. Always check traffic before assuming Tehran can be crossed quickly.

Local Qazvin Airport and Payam

Qazvin Airport is mapped as GZW/OIIK, with aviation sources placing it on the eastern outskirts of Qazvin and listing it as a civil airport. Waze and SKYbrary both identify Qazvin Airport, and Acukwik lists the airfield with VFR characteristics. For ordinary visitors, this is mainly useful for understanding that Qazvin has an airfield, not for booking a normal scheduled arrival.

Payam International Airport (PYK) near Karaj may appear in datasets because it is closer than IKA in a straight-line sense, but it should be treated as a specialist/regional airport unless your ticket actually uses PYK. For most practical trips, IKA, THR, rail and road routes matter more.

Airport Transfer Options

Direct taxi or private car

A direct car from IKA or THR to Qazvin is the lowest-friction option. It avoids Tehran terminal transfers, Iranian ticketing friction and luggage handling. The trade-off is cost and traffic risk. Use Snapp, TAPSI, a hotel-arranged driver or a written transfer quote to set the price before departure. If using a street taxi at the airport, agree the amount and currency before loading bags.

Rail via Tehran

Rail is usually the best value if the timing works. From IKA, reach Tehran first, then use Qazvin-bound rail. From THR, travel to a rail point or directly to the bus terminal depending traffic and ticket availability. This route is more complex than a private car, but it avoids road congestion on part of the journey and is comfortable once seated.

Bus via Tehran West Terminal

For many Iranians, the easiest road route between Tehran and Qazvin is through Tehran’s western bus system and Qazvin’s Azadegan terminal. Online bus pages list Qazvin-Tehran as a frequent route, with VIP and standard options. This is often the practical budget route if you are already in Tehran rather than at IKA.

Rail: Qazvin Station and Tehran Corridor

Qazvin railway station is one of the most important parts of the city transport picture. Local mapping sources place it in the Rah Ahan area, around Montazeri Street / Rah Ahan Street and Meydan-e Rah Ahan. Neshan describes the station as located at Meydan-e Rah Ahan, and Balad/Flytoday place it in the Rah Ahan neighbourhood on Montazeri and the end of Rah Ahan Street. The station is south of the tourist core, so most visitors will use a taxi between the station and hotel.

The route to Tehran is frequent enough to be a realistic first option. Rome2Rio’s operator summary says Raja Rail Transportation Co. operates Qazvin-Tehran trains about every three hours, with an average journey time around 2 hours 13 minutes, and lists Raja contact details. Exact timings and tickets should come from Raja or a trusted ticket platform because Iranian rail capacity and train types change by date.

Rail is also relevant for longer routes: Zanjan, Tabriz, Mashhad and other Iranian rail corridors may be reached directly or with a Tehran transfer depending the day. For visitors, the important habit is to book rail early. Iran travel specialists warn that train tickets can sell out around busy periods, and foreign bank-card limitations may make local agency or hotel assistance useful.

Azadegan Terminal and Intercity Buses

Qazvin’s main road terminal is usually referenced as Azadegan passenger terminal or the central terminal. The official Qazvin passenger terminal organization lists its address as Boulevard Khorramshahr, Tehran-e Ghadim Square, Azadegan Terminal, with phone numbers 028-33551225, 028-33552261 and 028-33561644. Bus-ticketing sites also list the terminal around the end of Ayatollah Torabi highway, Tehran-e Ghadim Square and Boulevard Khorramshahr, with passenger phone 028-33575557.

Use Azadegan for most intercity buses, especially Tehran, Rasht, Zanjan, Tabriz and other major road routes. OrientTrips describes Qazvin-Tehran as a popular and affordable bus route with frequent departures and standard/VIP vehicle classes. Qazvin-Tabriz is also described as a direct route taking roughly 5-6 hours, depending traffic and road conditions.

The terminal is not in the middle of the tourist core, so budget for a taxi at both ends. If arriving at Azadegan after dark, use Snapp/TAPSI if available or take a registered taxi from the terminal area. If departing early, ask the hotel to write “پایانه آزادگان قزوین” and the exact destination on paper or in a message.

Enghelab Terminal and Regional Road Routes

Enghelab terminal is a secondary terminal in south-west Qazvin. Payasafar describes it as a terminal used for Takestan services, and Payaneh lists the address as Qazvin, Shishechi, Asadabadi Boulevard, Enghelab Terminal. This matters because not every “Qazvin terminal” means Azadegan. If the destination is Takestan, Hamedan-side local movement or a smaller regional route, confirm whether the departure is from Enghelab, Azadegan or a shared-taxi stand.

For Alamut Valley, Ovan Lake and mountain villages, expect private car, arranged tour or negotiated taxi rather than a simple trunk bus. These routes are scenic but time-consuming. The safest plan is to arrange the car through the hotel or a known local driver, agree waiting time and return time, and avoid relying on app coverage in mountain areas.

For Rasht or the Caspian side, check both bus and private-car options. The road north crosses mountain terrain and can be slower in bad weather, holidays or weekend return traffic. If the final destination is not Rasht city itself, a car may be worth the extra cost because it avoids another transfer after the main road journey.

Local Buses and City Movement

Qazvin has a local bus system, but most first-time visitors will combine walking and taxis. The historic centre, Sa’d al-Saltaneh caravanserai area, bazaar, Chehel Sotoun, Sepah Street and central hotels are manageable by short rides. Local buses are better for residents and people who know the line number.

Qazvin has been modernizing bus payment. The city bus app page references a Qazvin Bus app, and local reporting says the urban bus card fare increased from 2,600 tomans to 3,200 tomans from the start of Mordad 1404. Mehr News separately reported a 22 percent fare increase and noted the system’s daily passenger volume. For a traveller, that means city buses are cheap, but the exact payment method and fare should be checked on the bus, with the hotel or at a terminal kiosk. Keep small cash even if the card/app system is available.

Taxis, Snapp and TAPSI

For Qazvin, online taxis are often the most comfortable mode. Snapp’s official site describes a super-app for ride requests, food, shopping, travel ticketing, hotel booking and other services. TAPSI’s official site advertises app-based vehicle requests and phone booking through 1630, useful if mobile data is poor or a visitor cannot make the app work.

Snapp and TAPSI are valuable because they show the fare before the ride and reduce negotiation. They may not always work perfectly for foreign visitors because of app stores, phone-number registration, sanctions-related payment limits and language. If the app works, use it for station-to-hotel, terminal-to-hotel and short city rides. If it does not, use the app estimate as a benchmark and ask the hotel to call a local taxi.

Traditional taxis remain important at terminals and stations. Agree the fare first. For airport transfers from IKA or THR, do not judge the price like a city ride; it is an intercity trip with tolls, fuel, driver time and Tehran traffic. For short city rides in Qazvin, app pricing or a hotel-arranged taxi should keep the fare reasonable.

Where to Stay by Transport Need

Historic centre and bazaar area

This is the best base for a short leisure stay. It keeps food, sights and taxis close. It is not next door to the rail station or Azadegan terminal, but the taxi rides are manageable.

Rah Ahan / rail-station side

Stay near the rail station only if the first or last transport leg is a train at an awkward hour. It is practical for early departures but less atmospheric than the historic centre.

Azadegan / eastern terminal side

This area is useful when the trip is bus-heavy or you have an early departure to Tehran, Rasht, Zanjan or Tabriz. It is less appealing for sightseeing unless the room price or timing makes sense.

Alamut road / outer-city base

Choose an outer-city base only with a car plan. It can be useful for mountain trips, but it weakens access to rail, bus and casual city movement.

Price and Fare Planning

Trip or fare item Planning benchmark Notes
Qazvin city bus 3,200 tomans by card was reported after the 1404 fare rise Confirm current local fare and payment method on the day
Qazvin-Tehran train roughly 2h+ on reported Raja route summaries Buy through Raja/local agency/ticket platform; timing changes by date
Qazvin-Tehran bus frequent route with standard and VIP options Use Azadegan terminal, OrientTrips-style booking pages or terminal counters
Qazvin-Tabriz bus about 5-6 hours on route descriptions Traffic, class and operator affect actual time
IKA-Qazvin car long intercity airport transfer, about 165-170 km by road Quote before departure; late-night and luggage can justify private car
Local taxi/app ride best checked in Snapp or TAPSI If no app, agree fare before riding

First-Time Checklist

  1. Confirm the airport code: IKA, THR, PYK, RAS or GZW mean very different plans.
  2. For international arrivals, decide whether to pay for a direct IKA-Qazvin car or transfer through Tehran.
  3. For Tehran and longer Iran routes, check rail tickets before assuming same-day travel.
  4. Confirm whether your bus leaves from Azadegan terminal, Enghelab terminal or Tehran West Terminal.
  5. Install Snapp and TAPSI before travel, but keep a hotel taxi backup.
  6. Carry small Iranian cash for local buses, taxis, snacks and terminals.
  7. For Alamut, Ovan Lake or rural routes, arrange a car and return time in advance.

Qazvin Transport Hub FAQ

What airport should I use for Qazvin?

Use IKA for most international flights and THR for most domestic flights. Qazvin Airport exists locally, but it is not the normal scheduled-passenger gateway for most visitors.

Is train or bus better from Tehran to Qazvin?

Train is comfortable when tickets match your timing, while bus is frequent and easy from Tehran’s western road network. Compare both before choosing, especially if arriving at an airport.

Where is the main Qazvin road terminal?

The main terminal is Azadegan passenger terminal at Boulevard Khorramshahr, Tehran-e Ghadim Square. Enghelab terminal is separate and mainly matters for Takestan and south-western regional movement.

Do Snapp and TAPSI work in Qazvin?

They are the first app options to try. Snapp is the broader super-app, while TAPSI also advertises phone booking through 1630. Keep hotel taxi help as a backup.

Where should I stay for easy transport in Qazvin?

For sightseeing, stay in or near the historic centre. For early trains, use the rail-station side. For early intercity buses, stay closer to Azadegan only if the timing is more important than atmosphere.
