São Gonçalo in Rio de Janeiro state is a road-first transport hub on the east side of Guanabara Bay. It is not the São Gonçalo do Amarante airport municipality in Rio Grande do Norte, and it should not be planned around NAT airport. The correct airport choices are Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão (GIG) and Santos Dumont (SDU), followed by a road transfer across the metropolitan area or a Rio-to-Niterói ferry plus bus/taxi chain. The city’s daily transport logic is built around Alcântara, Neves, BR-101 / Niterói-Manilha, RJ-104, Niterói connections, Rio commuter routes and regional buses to the Lakes Region.

The most useful local anchor is Alcântara. Multiple route and ticketing references show Terminal Raul Veiga – Alcântara and Rodoviária de Alcântara as the practical road hub for local, metropolitan and regional movement. Buser lists Terminal Rodoviário de Alcântara at Rua Jovelino de Oliveira Viana, 250, Alcântara, São Gonçalo – RJ, 24710-470. There is no practical passenger rail hub in São Gonçalo today. If You Land at Santos Dumont

SDU is the simplest airport for many São Gonçalo trips if the flight schedule works. It is downtown Rio, close to the bridge and ferry-side logic. That is a useful live-market cue because the trip crosses the Rio/Niterói/São Gonçalo corridor rather than staying inside one city. Use SDU plus direct car when:

• You have luggage.
• You arrive after dark.
• Your hotel is not beside a major corridor.
• You need to reach Alcântara or a neighborhood beyond Niterói.

If You Land at Galeão

GIG is the main international airport, but it is farther and more road-sensitive. Uber’s GIG pickup page says pickups are on the departures floor at Terminals 1 and 2, and drivers meet at the selected app pickup point. For São Gonçalo, a direct app ride, official taxi or private transfer is the most straightforward plan after an international flight. Public-mode chains are possible, but they usually involve multiple steps: GIG to Rio or Niterói, then bridge/ferry/bus/taxi onward.

For late arrivals, prearrange or use a direct app ride. If budget matters and you arrive in daylight, compare airport-to-Rio transport, ferry to Niterói and then a bus/taxi to São Gonçalo. That chain can save money, but it is awkward with bags.

If You Arrive by Bus from Niterói or Rio

Niterói is the key neighbor. Rome2Rio shows a direct bus between Terminal Rodoviário Roberto Silveira and São Gonçalo – Alcântara, with departures about every 30 minutes and a trip around 17 minutes in its result set. Rome2Rio also shows direct buses from São Gonçalo – Alcântara to Novo Rio, with hourly service and about 50 minutes in its result set. Treat those times as route planning cues, not guarantees; the BR-101 / bridge / urban corridor can slow.

If arriving at Niterói by ferry from Praça XV, use the Arariboia area and then continue by taxi/Uber or bus to São Gonçalo. The ferry itself is a strong cross-bay link, but it is not the final São Gonçalo transfer.

SDU to Alcântara is the clearest airport route for many travelers. The route can go over the Rio-Niterói bridge and continue through Niterói / São Gonçalo corridors. Uber’s average price cue around R$100 helps decide between direct app ride and a ferry/bus chain. For a first visit, direct ride usually wins because Alcântara is still east of Niterói and not next door to the ferry.

If you want the budget chain, consider SDU to Praça XV or walking/taxi to Praça XV depending on luggage, ferry to Praça Arariboia, then bus/taxi/Uber to Alcântara. This works best by day with light bags.

GIG to São Gonçalo

GIG to São Gonçalo is a longer metropolitan ride. Use Uber, airport taxi or private transfer unless you know Rio connections well. Niterói can be a useful intermediate base. If your meeting is in western São Gonçalo or you want easier access to Rio, staying in Niterói and commuting may be better than staying deep in São Gonçalo. Niterói Roberto Silveira

Niterói’s Roberto Silveira terminal is the cleanest neighboring terminal to know. Omio lists Rodoviária Roberto Silveira at Rua Barão do Amazonas, 158-192, Centro, Niterói – RJ, 24030-013. Rome2Rio shows direct services between that terminal and São Gonçalo – Alcântara. This makes Niterói a bridge between Rio ferries, Rio road links and São Gonçalo neighborhoods.

Praça Arariboia to Praça XV

Barcas Rio lists the Praça Arariboia – Praça XV route with travel time up to 22 minutes and fare R$5,00. Praça Arariboia is in Niterói, not São Gonçalo, but it is a powerful fallback for reaching central Rio without bridge traffic. If you are staying in São Gonçalo and need Rio Centro, a taxi or bus to Niterói ferry plus ferry to Praça XV can sometimes be calmer than road traffic.

Use the ferry when:

• Your Rio destination is Centro / Praça XV / downtown.
• You travel light.
• It is daytime or normal commuting hours.
• You can reach Niterói easily.

Use direct road transport when:

• You have luggage.
• You are going to airport terminals.

São Gonçalo municipal bus movement is dense and neighborhood-specific. Line numbers, terminal bays and final neighborhoods matter.

São Gonçalo has no practical rail station for ordinary passenger travel today. The city is often discussed in regional rail/metro hopes, but current visitor logistics are road-based. If you need Rio rail or metro, first reach Niterói/Rio connection points by bus, app ride, taxi or ferry. If you need SuperVia, Rio Metro or Central do Brasil, plan the Rio-side leg separately.

This is especially important for airport planning. Neither GIG nor SDU gives a one-seat rail ride to São Gonçalo. Do not book accommodation assuming a metro connection exists.
