Shantou Transport Hub
Shantou Transport Hub
Shantou is a coastal city where the transport plan has to be split before it becomes simple. The airport is not in the city core, the fastest rail options may use different stations depending on the route, long-distance road departures cluster near the eastern rail area, and district choice matters because Shantou stretches from the old Small Park quarter and Jinsha Road business hotels to Longhu, Chenghai, Haojiang, Chaoyang, Chaonan and Nan’ao Island.
For most visitors the main air gateway is Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport (SWA), also shown as Chaoshan Airport or Jieyang Chaoshan Airport. It sits at Denggang in Jieyang, northwest of Shantou, and serves the wider Chaoshan area of Shantou, Chaozhou and Jieyang. The practical airport choices are the airport express bus, a metered taxi, a Didi ride, or a private car arranged by a hotel or host. For city rail, use Shantou railway station on Taishan Road when the ticket ends in central Shantou; use Shantou South for high-speed services on the Shantou-Shanwei corridor and Haojiang-side stays; use Chaoshan station when a faster or better-timed high-speed train does not enter Shantou city.
The safest Shantou strategy is to plan the first and last kilometre with the exact station name in Chinese saved on the phone. The names look similar in English, but they are not interchangeable. Shantou station, Shantou South and Chaoshan station can mean different sides of the journey, different taxi distances and different hotel choices.
Fast Facts
| Need | Best Shantou answer | Planning cue |
|---|---|---|
| Main airport | Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport (SWA), Denggang Town, Jieyang | Use airport express bus, Didi, taxi or hotel car; it is a regional airport, not a downtown terminal. |
| Airport express | Shantou airport express routes link the airport with city points including Shantou city terminal / rail-side and Golden Gulf Hotel side | Published timetables can change with flights, weather and road work; check the current board before travel. |
| Airport taxi | Official taxi pickup is outside the arrival hall; Shantou-bound passengers should use the Shantou taxi lane or app pickup point | Ask for the meter when using a licensed taxi; use Didi for an upfront app quote. |
| Main city rail hub | Shantou railway station, Taishan Road, Longhu District | Good for central Shantou, Longhu hotels, city buses and the nearby city air terminal. |
| High-speed rail split | Shantou South and Chaoshan station can be better for some high-speed routes | Match the ticket station to the hotel area before booking. |
| Main road hub | Shantou Central road terminal, Taishan Road 61, Longhu District | Near Shantou railway station and useful for Guangdong, Fujian and wider intercity road trips. |
| City bus fares | Many central routes are low-cost; 2025 local listings show route categories from about CNY 2 to CNY 18 | Central city rides are cheap, but long cross-district lines and tourist routes cost more. |
| App ride | Didi is the main ride-hailing layer for visitors who can register and pay in-app | Use it for airport quotes, late arrivals, hotels away from rail stops and Nan’ao/Chenghai side planning. |
Arrival Strategy
If You Fly Into SWA
Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport is the airport code most Shantou visitors should expect. It is shared by the Chaoshan cities, so do not assume a short city-airport ride just because the flight search labels it as Shantou. For the old Shantou core or Longhu, the airport is a regional transfer: close enough for a taxi to be practical, far enough that a wrong hotel location or late-night arrival can add cost.
The airport express is usually the first budget option. Guangdong Airport Group procurement material describes airport express operations between Jieyang Chaoshan Airport and Jieyang, Shantou, Chaozhou and surrounding areas, with Shantou routes included in the route requirement. Local timetable listings for 2025 point passengers to the airport express ticket office and remind them that times may move with flight schedules, weather and road construction. For a visitor, that means the bus is useful, but only after checking the current board in the arrivals hall or the Shantou departure point.
Taxi and Didi are the cleaner answer for late flights, family luggage, hotels in the old quarter, Chenghai, Haojiang or a university-side address. Local pickup guidance says the airport taxi area is outside the arrivals hall and separates Shantou, Jieyang and Chaozhou taxis by lane. For Shantou city destinations, use the Shantou-plate taxi lane, or use the marked Didi pickup point. This matters because a regional airport with three city markets can easily produce confusion if the driver hears only “downtown”.
If You Arrive By Rail
Shantou railway station is the easiest rail anchor for many first-time visitors. It is on Taishan Road in Longhu District, about 5 km east of the older central area, and it has city-bus and taxi pickup facilities around the station complex. The nearby road terminal and the Shantou city air terminal make this part of Longhu a practical transport base, even if it is not the historic walking area.
High-speed rail adds two extra decisions. Shantou South is in Haojiang District and is useful for high-speed services on the coastal Shantou-Shanwei route and for stays south of the bay. Chaoshan station is outside central Shantou, in the Chaozhou/Chaoshan rail corridor, and may still appear for high-speed trips when the best timetable does not enter Shantou city. A ticket to Chaoshan station is not the same as a ticket to Shantou station. It can be a good choice for Chaozhou, airport-area transfer logic or a cheaper/faster train, but it adds a final road or rail step into Shantou.
If You Arrive By Intercity Road
The main road terminal to know is the Shantou Central road terminal at Taishan Road 61, Longhu District. Local listings describe it as part of the eastern passenger interchange with the railway station and city-bus stops. It is useful for Guangdong and Fujian corridors, regional towns, and routes that do not make sense by rail.
Road arrivals are less predictable than rail because operators, pickup points and online listings can vary. If a ticket says only Shantou, confirm whether the arrival is Taishan Road 61, a hotel-side airport express stop, a district terminal, or a curbside point. For a late arrival, save the Chinese address of the hotel and be ready to use Didi or a licensed taxi for the last step.
Airport Transfer Planner
SWA To Central Shantou
For a normal daytime arrival, compare three choices.
The airport express bus is the lowest-stress budget route when your hotel is near the listed stop, such as the Shantou station / city terminal side or the Golden Gulf Hotel corridor. TravelChinaGuide and ChinaAirlineTravel both give a planning fare of about CNY 28 for airport bus service between the airport and Shantou-side points, with typical journey times around 50-70 minutes depending on the stop. Use that number as a planning cue, not as a promise for every route and date.
A metered taxi is better when you arrive after the last useful bus, when your hotel is away from the stop, or when luggage makes a transfer annoying. ChinaAirlineTravel gives a Shantou railway station to SWA taxi cue of about CNY 120 and about one hour. Traffic, district, waiting time, tolls and airport return-charge rules can change the final fare, so do not use a single quote as a fixed price.
Didi is the cleanest comparison tool if your phone, payment and network work in China. The airport has a marked app pickup point according to local Shantou guidance. The app can also make the ride easier for non-Chinese speakers because the destination is pinned and the price is shown before the trip.
SWA To Shantou Rail Hub
Shantou railway station is the best airport transfer target if the hotel is near Longhu, Jinsha Road, Times Square, the eastern business area or the road terminal. It also works as a fallback even if the hotel is not right there, because buses and taxis are available around the rail area.
If using the airport bus, check whether the stop is the Shantou city terminal on the station-square side, Golden Gulf Hotel, or another current stop. If using taxi or Didi, show 汕头站 and the hotel address separately. Drivers understand the station, but Shantou station is not the same as Shantou South or Chaoshan station.
SWA To Old Shantou / Small Park
For the old quarter, the airport express may still work if you are comfortable finishing by taxi from the stop. With luggage or a late arrival, a direct taxi or Didi is usually easier. Small Park, Xidi, the old port streets and the waterfront are west of the rail station, so the final city leg is the part that makes or breaks the transfer.
SWA To Chenghai, Haojiang, Chaoyang, Chaonan Or Nan’ao
Do not treat all Shantou districts as the same airport transfer. Chenghai, Haojiang, Chaoyang, Chaonan and Nan’ao are different planning problems. Chenghai is north/east of the central core; Haojiang is south of the bay and may align better with Shantou South for rail; Chaoyang and Chaonan are farther south-west; Nan’ao Island requires the bridge corridor and can be slow at holiday peaks.
For these districts, check the exact address and compare a direct Didi/taxi with airport express plus a local transfer. For Nan’ao, a private car or local transfer plan can be worth more than the cheapest city bus chain, especially with luggage or an evening arrival.
Rail Strategy
Shantou Main Rail Hub
Shantou railway station is the default city rail hub for most visitors. ChinaAirlineTravel lists the station address on Taishan Road, Longhu District, and notes that ticketing, departures and arrivals are on the main level while taxi pickup and bus transfer areas are in the lower level. TravelChinaGuide lists city bus routes serving the station area and notes the airport city terminal nearby.
Use Shantou station for:
- Longhu, Jinsha Road, MixC / Times Square and many business hotels.
- Central Shantou arrivals when the ticket is available directly to Shantou.
- Airport express access from the rail-side city terminal.
- Easy taxi/Didi continuation to Small Park, Xidi, Shantou University or Chenghai.
The station is convenient, but it is not a walking-distance station for every tourist district. A hotel near the old port quarter still needs a taxi or city bus ride from the station.
Shantou South
Shantou South is the important newer rail stop for the Shantou-Shanwei high-speed corridor and the Haojiang side of the city. China Railway-related reporting says the Shantou to Shantou South section of the Shantou-Shanwei high-speed line entered service in December 2025, extending high-speed access toward Shantou city and improving links to Guangzhou and Shenzhen. For a traveller, the key point is simple: if the ticket says Shantou South, plan the hotel and taxi around Haojiang or the south side, not around Longhu by habit.
Shantou South can be a good choice when the rail timetable is better, the stay is south of the bay, or the trip continues along the coastal high-speed line. It is less convenient for the old quarter or Longhu hotels unless the fare and schedule advantage are strong enough to justify the final ride.
Chaoshan Station
Chaoshan station remains a useful fallback for high-speed trips, especially when the best timed train stops there rather than in Shantou city. Rome2Rio-style and rail-guide listings show rail and bus links between Chaoshan station and Shantou, and TravelChinaGuide gives a planning connection from Shantou station to Chaoshan station using city bus plus high-speed express bus at about CNY 22 and around 80 minutes, or taxi at about CNY 100 and around an hour.
Use Chaoshan station deliberately. It can be smart for Chaozhou, airport-side itineraries and high-speed availability, but it is not a substitute for Shantou station if your hotel is in central Shantou and you are arriving late.
Ticketing And Names
Use 12306 or an approved ticketing channel for rail times and final fares. The station names to check are:
- 汕头站 / Shantou for the central Longhu rail hub.
- 汕头南站 / Shantou South for Haojiang and the Shantou-Shanwei corridor.
- 潮汕站 / Chaoshan for the regional high-speed stop outside central Shantou.
Screenshot the ticket in Chinese. It saves time at taxi ranks and prevents a driver from guessing the wrong station from the English name.
Road Terminal And Intercity Bus Planning
The main road terminal is Shantou Central road terminal, Taishan Road 61, Longhu District. Local Shantou listings place it near the rail station and describe it as part of the eastern passenger interchange for road and city-bus services. TravelChinaGuide describes this terminal as the most important long-distance road hub and notes routes to cities in Guangdong and other provinces.
This station is the first place to check for regional road trips when rail is not direct or when the destination is a county, island-side or cross-province town. It is especially useful for eastern Guangdong and Fujian road logic, and for trips where the rail station is not the right end point.
Before buying, confirm:
- The exact departure point, because some operators use district points or hotel-side stops.
- Whether the ticket is paper, QR, ID-based or app-based.
- Luggage rules and arrival point.
- The final local ride after arrival, especially for late-night returns.
If the road route competes with rail, compare door-to-door time, not only the scheduled journey. Shantou station plus a Didi might beat a cheaper road ticket if the road terminal arrival is inconvenient; the opposite can be true for towns with no rail.
City Buses, Ferry And Local Movement
Shantou does not currently work like a metro city for visitors. The useful urban layer is city bus, taxi, Didi and occasional ferry/waterfront movement. TravelChinaGuide states that Shantou has no subway service, while local 2025 listings group bus routes into central city routes, night routes, express routes, community routes, tourism routes and intercity-style lines, with fares ranging from about CNY 2 to CNY 18 depending on route type and distance.
For ordinary central movement, the bus is cheap and useful if the route is direct. For a first-time visitor with luggage, bus is less attractive from airport or rail arrival unless the stop is obvious. For sightseeing, buses can work well between the rail area, Jinsha Road, Small Park, Shantou University, Queshi / Haojiang side, Chenghai and Nan’ao approaches, but routes can take time because the city is spread out.
Shantou Port and local waterfront points add another layer. TravelChinaGuide lists Shantou Port Group at No.31 Han Jiang Road and describes Xidi, Laiwu and other ports for nearby destinations or tourist movements. Treat boats as destination-specific rather than as the core everyday transport system.
Taxi, Didi And Price Cues
Licensed Taxi
For licensed taxis, use official ranks at the airport and rail stations, ask for the meter, and avoid unofficial vehicles. Local airport guidance specifically tells passengers not to use unlicensed cars and to ask for metered charging. TravelChinaGuide gives a taxi fare structure cue for Shantou of CNY 10 for the first 2.6 km and CNY 2.4 per additional kilometre, while its airport page notes a possible extra return-charge rule for longer airport rides. Because taxi fare rules can be adjusted, treat those as planning cues and check the meter, receipt and local notice at the rank.
Typical planning numbers from rail and airport guides:
- Shantou railway station to SWA airport: about CNY 120 and about 60 minutes.
- Shantou railway station to Chaoshan station by taxi: about CNY 100 and about one hour.
- Shantou railway station to Queshi scenic side: about CNY 45 and about 30 minutes in guide examples.
These numbers are useful for detecting a wildly wrong quote, but the live trip depends on district, traffic and time of day.
Didi
Didi is the app ride layer to check in Shantou. The DiDi China app store listing says inbound users can use an English version, global mobile number login and bilingual in-app messaging. For Shantou, Didi is most useful for:
- SWA airport to a hotel not near the express stop.
- Late rail arrivals.
- Old quarter hotels where a bus transfer would be awkward.
- Chenghai, Haojiang, Chaoyang, Chaonan or Nan’ao-side movement.
- Comparing whether a taxi quote is sensible.
Have the hotel name in Chinese, not only English. Many Shantou hotels use English names online but Chinese names locally, and the driver follows the map pin more confidently than a translated address.
Car Rental And Driver Planning
Car rental is not necessary for a normal city stay. Shantou driving, parking and navigation are harder than using rail, taxi and Didi for the central city. A car or hired driver becomes useful for Nan’ao Island, rural Chaoshan food routes, factory visits, family visits, or a multi-city loop through Chaozhou, Jieyang and Meizhou.
Foreign visitors should confirm licence requirements before planning self-drive in mainland China. For many travellers, a car with driver is the more realistic option. It can be booked through a hotel, local operator or app marketplace, and it removes the risk of parking, toll and navigation mistakes.
Best Areas To Stay
Longhu / Shantou Rail Side
This is the most practical transport base. Stay here for rail arrivals, early departures, airport express access, business trips, and easy Didi/taxi movement across the city. It is less romantic than the old quarter, but it reduces transport friction.
Jinsha Road / Times Square / MixC Side
This is a strong hotel zone for restaurants, business addresses and central movement. It balances airport access, station access and city dining better than a very old-quarter base. For first-time visitors who want comfort and easy rides, this is often the simplest area.
Small Park / Xidi / Old Port Quarter
Stay here for walking, heritage streets, food and the classic Shantou atmosphere. Transport is less automatic: airport and rail arrivals usually need a taxi or Didi from the stop. It is excellent for sightseeing, less ideal for very early train or flight departures.
Haojiang / Shantou South Side
Choose this side if the rail ticket uses Shantou South, if the trip focuses on Queshi, south-bay work or high-speed coastal services, or if a hotel is deliberately chosen for that district. Do not choose it casually for central Shantou sightseeing without checking the bay crossing time.
Chenghai / Nan’ao Direction
Chenghai works for business, family visits and toy-industry addresses. Nan’ao is a destination stay rather than a central-city base. For Nan’ao, plan bridge traffic, holiday peaks and return transport before committing to a late flight or train.
Route Playbook
Airport To Hotel
If the hotel is near Shantou station, Longhu or Golden Gulf Hotel, check the airport express first. If the hotel is in Small Park, Xidi, Haojiang, Chenghai or Nan’ao direction, compare the bus plus final ride against Didi direct. For late flights, app or taxi usually wins.
Rail To Hotel
If arriving at Shantou station, use city bus only when the hotel is route-simple and luggage is light. Otherwise use Didi or taxi. If arriving at Shantou South or Chaoshan, plan the final leg before boarding the train.
Shantou To Chaozhou
Rail via Chaoshan corridor can be efficient if the schedule works, but a road transfer may be simpler from some hotels. Compare the end address: Chaozhou old city is not the same as Chaoshan station.
Shantou To Guangzhou Or Shenzhen
Check 12306 for direct trains from Shantou or Shantou South first. If times are poor, compare Chaoshan station. Road services can still be useful, but high-speed rail is usually the first comparison for Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
Shantou To Nan’ao
Use district-aware planning. A city bus chain can be cheap, but Didi, taxi or a hired car may be better with luggage, children, heat, rain or a tight return. Holiday traffic over Nan’ao Bridge can change the day.
First-Time Checklist
- Confirm whether the ticket says SWA, Shantou, Shantou South or Chaoshan.
- Save the Chinese hotel name and address.
- If flying, check the current airport express board and compare Didi before leaving the terminal.
- If arriving by rail, do not mix up Shantou station, Shantou South and Chaoshan station.
- Keep CNY cash or a working mobile payment option for bus/taxi backup.
- Use licensed taxi lanes at SWA and rail stations.
- Avoid very tight same-day connections between Nan’ao, airport and rail unless using a private car.
- For late arrivals, choose Longhu/Jinsha Road or rail-side hotels over a remote address.

Shantou Transport Hub FAQ
What is the main airport for Shantou?
The main airport is Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport (SWA), a regional airport serving Shantou, Chaozhou and Jieyang. For Shantou city, compare the airport express bus with Didi or a metered taxi. The bus is cheaper when the stop matches the hotel; Didi or taxi is usually easier for late arrivals, luggage and district hotels.
How much is a taxi from SWA airport to central Shantou?
Use about CNY 120 from the Shantou railway station side to SWA as a planning cue, with about one hour of travel in normal conditions. The exact fare depends on distance, traffic, route, time and meter rules. At the airport, use the Shantou taxi lane or the marked Didi pickup point.
Which rail station should I use in Shantou?
Use Shantou railway station for Longhu, Jinsha Road, many central hotels and the rail-side city air terminal. Use Shantou South for Haojiang-side stays and Shantou-Shanwei high-speed services. Use Chaoshan station only when the timetable is better or the itinerary is Chaozhou/airport-corridor focused.
Is there a subway in Shantou?
No. Shantou is a city-bus, taxi, Didi and rail-transfer city for visitors. Local bus fares are cheap for central trips, but cross-district and tourism routes can cost more and take longer.
Where is Shantou’s main intercity road terminal?
Use the Shantou Central road terminal at Taishan Road 61, Longhu District as the main road hub. It is near Shantou railway station and city-bus stops, making it practical for regional road departures and arrivals.
Is Didi useful in Shantou?
Yes. Didi is useful for airport transfers, late arrivals, hotels away from rail stops, Chenghai, Haojiang, Nan’ao-side movement and checking whether a taxi quote is reasonable. Confirm that your phone number, payment method and data connection work before relying on it.
