Chaoshan station is outside central Shantou, in the Chaozhou/Chaoshan rail corridor, and may still appear for high-speed trips when the best timetable does not enter Shantou city. A ticket to Chaoshan station is not the same as a ticket to Shantou station. It can be a good choice for Chaozhou, airport-area transfer logic or a cheaper/faster train, but it adds a final road or rail step into Shantou.

If You Arrive By Intercity Road

The main road terminal to know is the Shantou Central road terminal at Taishan Road 61, Longhu District. Local listings describe it as part of the eastern passenger interchange with the railway station and city-bus stops. It is useful for Guangdong and Fujian corridors, regional towns, and routes that do not make sense by rail.

Road arrivals are less predictable than rail because operators, pickup points and online listings can vary. If a ticket says only Shantou, confirm whether the arrival is Taishan Road 61, a hotel-side airport express stop, a district terminal, or a curbside point. For a late arrival, save the Chinese address of the hotel and be ready to use Didi or a licensed taxi for the last step.

For a normal daytime arrival, compare three choices.

The airport express bus is the lowest-stress budget route when your hotel is near the listed stop, such as the Shantou station / city terminal side or the Golden Gulf Hotel corridor. If using the airport bus, check whether the stop is the Shantou city terminal on the station-square side, Golden Gulf Hotel, or another current stop. SWA To Old Shantou / Small Park

For the old quarter, the airport express may still work if you are comfortable finishing by taxi from the stop. With luggage or a late arrival, a direct taxi or Didi is usually easier. Small Park, Xidi, the old port streets and the waterfront are west of the rail station, so the final city leg is the part that makes or breaks the transfer.

SWA To Chenghai, Haojiang, Chaoyang, Chaonan Or Nan’ao

Do not treat all Shantou districts as the same airport transfer. Chenghai, Haojiang, Chaoyang, Chaonan and Nan’ao are different planning problems. Chenghai is north/east of the central core; Haojiang is south of the bay and may align better with Shantou South for rail; Chaoyang and Chaonan are farther south-west; Nan’ao Island requires the bridge corridor and can be slow at holiday peaks.

For these districts, check the exact address and compare a direct Didi/taxi with airport express plus a local transfer. For Nan’ao, a private car or local transfer plan can be worth more than the cheapest city bus chain, especially with luggage or an evening arrival.

Rail Strategy

Shantou Main Rail Hub

Shantou railway station is the default city rail hub for most visitors. ChinaAirlineTravel lists the station address on Taishan Road, Longhu District, and notes that ticketing, departures and arrivals are on the main level while taxi pickup and bus transfer areas are in the lower level. Use Shantou station for:

• Central Shantou arrivals when the ticket is available directly to Shantou.
• Airport express access from the rail-side city terminal.
• Easy taxi/Didi continuation to Small Park, Xidi, Shantou University or Chenghai.

The station is convenient, but it is not a walking-distance station for every tourist district. A hotel near the old port quarter still needs a taxi or city bus ride from the station.

Shantou South

Shantou South is the important newer rail stop for the Shantou-Shanwei high-speed corridor and the Haojiang side of the city. China Railway-related reporting says the Shantou to Shantou South section of the Shantou-Shanwei high-speed line entered service in December 2025, extending high-speed access toward Shantou city and improving links to Guangzhou and Shenzhen. For a traveller, the key point is simple: if the ticket says Shantou South, plan the hotel and taxi around Haojiang or the south side, not around Longhu by habit.

Shantou South can be a good choice when the rail timetable is better, the stay is south of the bay, or the trip continues along the coastal high-speed line. It is less convenient for the old quarter or Longhu hotels unless the fare and schedule advantage are strong enough to justify the final ride.

Chaoshan Station

Chaoshan station remains a useful fallback for high-speed trips, especially when the best timed train stops there rather than in Shantou city. Rome2Rio-style and rail-guide listings show rail and bus links between Chaoshan station and Shantou, and TravelChinaGuide gives a planning connection from Shantou station to Chaoshan station using city bus plus high-speed express bus at about CNY 22 and around 80 minutes, or taxi at about CNY 100 and around an hour.

Best Areas To Stay

Longhu / Shantou Rail Side

This is the most practical transport base. Stay here for rail arrivals, early departures, airport express access, business trips, and easy Didi/taxi movement across the city. It is less romantic than the old quarter, but it reduces transport friction.

Jinsha Road / Times Square / MixC Side

This is a strong hotel zone for restaurants, business addresses and central movement. It balances airport access, station access and city dining better than a very old-quarter base. For first-time visitors who want comfort and easy rides, this is often the simplest area.

Small Park / Xidi / Old Port Quarter

Stay here for walking, heritage streets, food and the classic Shantou atmosphere. Transport is less automatic: airport and rail arrivals usually need a taxi or Didi from the stop. It is excellent for sightseeing, less ideal for very early train or flight departures.

Haojiang / Shantou South Side

Chenghai / Nan’ao Direction
