Suzhou Transport Hub

Suzhou is a major Yangtze River Delta city, but its transport logic is different from Shanghai, Hangzhou or Nanjing. Most travellers do not land at a large Suzhou passenger airport. They arrive through Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA), Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), Sunan Shuofang International Airport (WUX) near Wuxi, or by high-speed rail from Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou and other cities. A strong Suzhou transport plan starts with that reality.

Inside the city, Suzhou Rail Transit is the backbone. Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 11 create a useful metro network for the old city, Suzhou Industrial Park, Jinji Lake, Suzhou North, Suzhou main rail hub, Suzhou New District and the east-west corridor toward Kunshan and Shanghai. Airport Strategy: SHA, PVG And WUX

SHA is often the most convenient airport for Suzhou because it shares the Hongqiao complex with Shanghai Hongqiao high-speed rail hub. A traveller can land at SHA, walk or transfer inside the Hongqiao area, take a high-speed train toward Suzhou or Suzhou North, then use Suzhou Rail Transit or Didi for the final leg. This is usually better than a long taxi across the region if train timing works.

PVG is the long-haul international gateway. It can still be the correct airport, but it is far from Suzhou. Line 2 is important because it connects Suzhou North with central interchange areas and south-side districts. If the rail ticket says Suzhou North, Line 2 is the first local line to check.

This creates a metro-to-metro link between the Suzhou/Kunshan corridor and Shanghai.

Line 11 is useful for Kunshan, Huaqiao, eastern Suzhou and some Shanghai-side trips, but it is not automatically faster than high-speed rail. For central Suzhou to central Shanghai, high-speed rail from Suzhou or Suzhou North to Shanghai/Hongqiao is usually faster.
