The airport is close to the city but not in the old town. Rome2Rio lists Graz Airport to Graz by train as about 9 minutes and €1-€3, while airport bus 630 is another short local option. Taxi is usually a 15-25 minute ride depending on destination and traffic.

Airport rail and bus

Graz Airport’s access page says bus 630 stops right outside the passenger terminal and runs via Puntigam to Zentralfriedhof, where travellers can change to tram line 5 toward the city centre. The same airport page also presents train access. ÖBB’s airport shuttle page gives the most important ticket rule: Graz airport is still inside fare Zone 101, so a valid ticket for city transport can be used to reach the airport without a surcharge.

For airport rail, follow signs to Flughafen Graz-Feldkirchen. The walk is short enough for light luggage, but taxi is easier after dark, in bad weather or with heavy bags.

Main rail point

Graz Hauptbahnhof is the rail point to use. ÖBB’s station page lists Graz Hauptbahnhof at Europaplatz 4, 8020 Graz, with free station Wi-Fi and travel information. Use Graz Hbf for Vienna, Linz, Salzburg, Bruck an der Mur, Maribor-side services, regional Styria routes and airport rail connections via the appropriate local route.

Central city interchange

Jakominiplatz is the central tram and bus interchange for most city sightseeing. Graz Tourism’s mobility page notes taxi ranks at the main rail point, Graz Airport-Thalerhof and in the city centre, including Jakominiplatz and Hauptplatz. If staying in the old town, around Hauptplatz, Herrengasse, Lend or Jakominiplatz, most local movement can be handled by tram, walking and occasional taxi.

For first-time navigation, think of Graz as two hubs: Graz Hbf for arrival/departure and Jakominiplatz for inner-city transfers.

Long-distance road-service stops

Graz does not have one single visitor-proof road terminal for every long-distance operator. GRZ to city by bus 630

The airport’s official access page says bus 630 stops right outside the passenger terminal and runs via Puntigam to Zentralfriedhof, where travellers can change to tram line 5 toward the city centre. This is useful for hotels on the southern tram axis or when the bus departure fits better than the train.

Bus plus tram is simple but not as direct as a taxi. It is best for daytime arrivals and travellers comfortable with a connection.

GRZ by taxi

Taxi is the easiest airport transfer for late arrivals, families, business trips and hotels away from rail/tram stops. Graz Tourism lists taxi ranks at Graz Airport-Thalerhof, Graz Hbf and central locations, and gives 24/7 taxi phone numbers including Taxi 878 at +43 316 878 and taxi2801 at +43 316 2801. Use taxi if the flight lands late, the hotel is in the old town pedestrian edge, or you have luggage. Ask for the fare basis before departure.

GRZ by local ticket

The useful Graz advantage is Zone 101. ÖBB says Graz airport is inside fare Zone 101 and that an existing valid public city ticket can be used to reach the airport with no surcharge. Holding Graz’s ticket page lists the monthly pass from €69.00 in Zone 101 and weekly ticket at €20.80; Graz Tourism lists the 24-hour ticket at €7.20 for adults.

For visitors, this means a 24-hour or multi-day plan can cover the airport leg if it is valid at the right time.

Late arrivals

For late arrivals, compare last train/bus with taxi cost. The airport is close enough that taxi is not a huge regional transfer, but it is still more expensive than Zone 101. If landing after local rail/tram frequency drops, taxi is the cleanest answer.

If the hotel is near Graz Hbf and your flight arrives early enough, rail is the value choice.

Trams are the practical city backbone. They connect Graz Hbf, Jakominiplatz, Hauptplatz/old town edges, university areas, Zentralfriedhof, Puntigam and many hotel districts. For residents and long stays, Holding Graz lists the Graz annual ticket at €315 for people with their main residence in Graz, valid in Zone 101. Most short-stay visitors will not use it, but it confirms that Zone 101 is the fare area to understand.

For several weeks, compare weekly, monthly and regional passes instead of buying hourly tickets repeatedly.

Rail, Regional and Long-Distance Travel

Graz Hauptbahnhof

Graz Hbf is the main rail hub. ÖBB gives the address as Europaplatz 4, 8020 Graz. ÖBB’s regional page describes it as one of Austria’s most important rail points and says it links local and long-distance transport within Styria and beyond. Information points are staffed most of the day according to ÖBB’s infopoints page.

Stay near Graz Hbf for early trains, late arrivals, Vienna/Linz/Salzburg connections, and airport rail convenience. Stay in the old town for sightseeing charm.

Vienna and Vienna Airport

Vienna is the main long-distance rail comparison. ÖBB is the official rail operator to check first. Trainline-style booking pages show Vienna Airport to Graz Hbf as a direct rail corridor with about 2h45 fastest services in some searches, but for final planning use ÖBB live schedules and fare rules. If flight prices to GRZ are high, Vienna Airport plus train can be a sensible alternative.

Do not compare airport codes only. Compare total door-to-door time, luggage and hotel check-in.

Maribor, Ljubljana and Slovenia side

When a taxi is best

Use taxi for late GRZ arrivals, early flights, old-town accommodation with luggage, poor weather, Webling/Murpark late arrivals, and family travel. Old town, Hauptplatz and Herrengasse

Jakominiplatz
