Zhanjiang Transport Hub
Zhanjiang is a coastal transport hub for western Guangdong, Hainan approaches and the Leizhou Peninsula. The city is not a simple one-station destination. Flights use Zhanjiang Wuchuan International Airport, high-speed trains mainly use Zhanjiang West Railway Station in Mazhang, older long-distance trains still use Zhanjiang Railway Station in Xiashan, and Hainan-bound travellers often need Xuwen or Hai’an ferry planning rather than a normal city transfer.
For a first arrival, the most important question is where you need to be the next morning. Choose Xiashan if you want the old rail station, the seafront, the South Coach Station area and many hotels. Choose Chikan / Haidian / Wanda if you want airport express stops, Haidian coach services and a central base. Choose Mazhang or Zhanjiang West if your trip is built around high-speed rail. Choose Xuwen only if the next movement is a ferry to Haikou or a Leizhou Peninsula road trip.
This guide focuses on the practical first-day details: airport express lines, taxi ranges, rail-station split, bus and coach hubs, ferry decisions, DiDi setup, local fares and the hotel areas that make Zhanjiang easier.

Arrival Strategy
Zhanjiang works best when you choose the arrival side first, then the hotel. The city stretches between coastal Xiashan, older Chikan districts, Mazhang / Zhanjiang West and road links to Wuchuan, Xuwen, Leizhou and Hainan ferry ports. A cheap hotel in the wrong district can cost more in transfer time than it saves.
Use this decision order:
- If you fly into ZHA and stay in Xiashan or Chikan, check the airport express first. Published city routes list CNY 35 per person, with Xiashan and Chikan lines that stop at hotels, city terminals and transport nodes.
- If you land late, use the airport to city timetable rather than the city to airport timetable. Recent airport passenger-station tables show airport-to-Xiashan service running into the night, while some outbound city services end earlier.
- If you arrive by high-speed train, use Zhanjiang West as the anchor. Do not assume it is beside the old Zhanjiang Railway Station; they are about 12-17 km apart depending on source and route.
- If you arrive by normal-speed train or need Xiashan, use Zhanjiang Railway Station on West Jiefang Road.
- If the next destination is Hainan, decide whether you are using rail through the Guangdong-Hainan railway system, a coach to Xuwen/Hai’an, or a private car to the ferry terminal.
For most visitors, Xiashan is easier for the seafront and older rail station, Chikan is better for airport express and coach access, and Mazhang is better for Zhanjiang West. Hainan-bound travellers should treat Xuwen as a separate transfer stage.
Zhanjiang Wuchuan International Airport
Zhanjiang Wuchuan International Airport is the main airport for Zhanjiang, western Guangdong and nearby Maoming traffic. It replaced the old city airport and is far enough from the urban core that the first transfer should be planned as a real regional ride, not a quick downtown taxi. The airport’s own transport page says Zhanjiang Wuchuan Airport has opened multiple airport express lines and tells passengers to follow Zhanqi Group’s public account for the latest routes and tickets. It also places the airport express waiting room at Gate 7 of the terminal arrival hall and gives customer-service confirmation at 0759-3163851.
Airport Express to Zhanjiang City
Published Zhanjiang airport express guidance lists several useful city-side routes:
| Route | Main stops / districts | Published operating pattern | Planning fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiashan to airport | Zhongnan Hotel city terminal, Haibin Hotel transfer, South Railway Station stop, Dingsheng Yuntian Hotel, Junhao Hotel, Gongnong terminal and other Xiashan stops | 04:30-20:30, about every 30 minutes, adjusted by flights | From CNY 35 |
| Chikan to airport | Huahe Hotel, Sheraton, Hilton, Lingnan Normal University east gate, Haitian Station, Ocean International Hotel, Nanqiao Station transfer and other Chikan stops | 06:00-20:30, about hourly, adjusted by flights | From CNY 35 |
| Mazhang to airport | Mazhang Coach Station via Haitian transfer | 06:30-18:20, 13 trips listed | From CNY 35 |
| Wuchuan to airport | Jinsha Plaza, Yuda Hotel, Aoyuan Plaza, Haibin passenger stop, Wuchuan No. 1 Middle School, Wuchuan terminal | Schedule varies by local table | From CNY 20 |
| Leizhou / Xuwen to airport | Leizhou via Haitian; Xuwen Port Passenger Station / Xuwen terminal via Haitian options | Check current table before relying on it | Leizhou from CNY 55; Xuwen from CNY 90 |
The airport-to-city direction can run later than the city-to-airport direction. A 2025 passenger-station table lists airport-to-Chikan from 09:00 to 21:50, about 13 departures, around 50 minutes and CNY 35. The same table lists airport-to-Xiashan from 09:00 to 01:30, about 13 departures, around 50 minutes and CNY 35. These times can change with flight patterns, so use them as a planning base and confirm on the day.
Custom Airport Passenger Line
In May 2026, Zhanjiang Wuchuan International Airport custom passenger service was reported as starting for Xiashan and Chikan. The service uses 9-seat electric business vehicles, covers specified pickup/drop-off zones in Xiashan and Chikan, and runs roughly 07:30-19:00 with dynamic adjustment to flight operations. This is the better product for passengers with luggage, families or addresses away from the fixed bus stops, provided the pickup zone covers your hotel.
Use the fixed airport express when you are close to a stop and travelling alone. Use the custom line when the address coverage is good and avoiding a local taxi transfer matters. Use DiDi or a taxi when your arrival is late, the bus stop is inconvenient or you need direct movement to Zhanjiang West, Xuwen, Donghai Island or a resort.
Taxi and DiDi from the Airport
Airport taxi cost depends heavily on the district. The airport is in the Wuchuan direction, while Xiashan and Chikan are different city-side targets. With the Zhanjiang taxi tariff, a long airport trip can move above the base distance and include tolls or waiting. Reasonable planning ranges:
| Airport trip | Planning range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ZHA to Chikan / Haitian area | About CNY 90-150 | Often the most natural city-side airport target |
| ZHA to Xiashan / South Railway Station area | About CNY 110-180 | Longer urban approach; compare with CNY 35 express |
| ZHA to Zhanjiang West Railway Station | About CNY 80-140 | Useful if connecting to high-speed rail; verify route because old station references can be confusing |
| ZHA to Xuwen / ferry route | Often CNY 350+ | Usually better planned by coach, rail/coach combination or private transfer |
For airport pickups, use the signed taxi rank, DiDi, a hotel-arranged car or the airport express counter. Avoid verbal offers from drivers who are not using the official rank or an app.
Rail Stations
Zhanjiang West Railway Station
Zhanjiang West Railway Station is the main high-speed rail station. China Airline Travel describes it as opened in 2018, located about 13 km west of downtown Zhanjiang in Mazhang District, with high-speed trains to major Guangdong and China destinations. Travel China Guide places the address at Shangtang Village of Mazhang Town in Mazhang District and describes the station as an integrated transportation center with bus stops, taxi stands, a coach station and private-vehicle access.
Use Zhanjiang West for:
- high-speed rail to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan and Greater Bay Area destinations;
- onward Hainan routes when your ticket specifically uses Zhanjiang West;
- hotels in Mazhang or west-side business districts;
- airport transfers when the bus or car route fits better than entering Xiashan.
The station has taxi pickup at the arrivals level and bus stops around the square. Published guidance lists bus routes such as 61K, 62K, 64K, 65K, 66K, 507 and several regional routes. China Airline Travel cautions that buses may be hard for foreign passengers because stops are mostly in Chinese and few crew speak English. For first arrivals, a taxi or DiDi from Zhanjiang West is often worth the extra cost.
Zhanjiang Railway Station in Xiashan
Zhanjiang Railway Station is the older rail station at No. 40 West Jiefang Road in Xiashan District. Travel China Guide describes it as southwest of the city center, next to Zhanjiang Port, and important for Hainan and western Guangdong access. It mainly operates normal-speed trains to and from destinations such as Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Guilin, Nanning, Chongqing, Chengdu, Beijing and Shanghai.
Use Zhanjiang Railway Station for:
- Xiashan hotels and seafront stays;
- ordinary long-distance trains rather than high-speed services;
- South Coach Station / South Passenger Station area access;
- travel that continues toward Hainan by older rail or coach patterns.
Do not confuse it with Zhanjiang West. Many older English pages call Zhanjiang Railway Station “South Railway Station” because it is in Xiashan and near South Coach Station. If a taxi driver sees only “Zhanjiang station” in English, show the Chinese name and address: 湛江站, 霞山区解放西路40号.
Station-to-Station Movement
The two stations are far enough apart that a mistake matters. Guidance for Zhanjiang West says downtown to Zhanjiang West is about 25 minutes and around CNY 25 by taxi. In real traffic, Xiashan-to-Zhanjiang West can be more. Plan 30-45 minutes when switching stations with luggage, and more if your train is fixed.
Use bus routes only if time is flexible. For a same-day train connection, DiDi or taxi is the practical default.
Coach and Regional Buses
Zhanjiang still relies heavily on coach transport because the city serves counties, ferry approaches, islands and western Guangdong towns that are not always convenient by rail.
The main coach points to understand are:
| Coach point | Practical role | Address / note |
|---|---|---|
| Haitian Coach Center / Haitian Station | Chikan-side coach and airport express anchor; useful for airport, county and transfer routes | Haitian Road 100; Air China also identifies Haitian Station city terminal at Chikan District Haitian Road 100 |
| South Coach Station / South Passenger Station | Xiashan-side coach access near Zhanjiang Railway Station | Jianshe Road 34 is listed for Zhanjiang South Coach Station |
| Mazhang Coach Station | Mazhang-side bus point; useful for Zhanjiang West / west-side routes | Used as an airport express stop via Haitian transfer |
| Zhanjiang West coach facilities | Integrated with or near Zhanjiang West Railway Station | Useful when arriving by high-speed rail and continuing by regional bus |
| Xuwen Port Passenger Station | Hainan ferry approach and airport express destination | Use only when the next move is Xuwen / Haikou |
The Zhanjiang Automobile Transportation Group website is the operator identity to know, even when its web pages are slow or unavailable outside China. Search and official airline notices identify Zhanqi Group as the operator behind airport express and coach services, with customer-service numbers such as 0759-3310000 for airport express ticketing and route confirmation.
For intercity coaches, buy through the official station/WeChat channel where possible. For foreign visitors, hotel staff can often help with Chinese station names. Save the Chinese version of every stop because “South Station”, “West Station” and “Haitian” can be translated inconsistently.
Hainan Ferry Planning
Zhanjiang is one of the mainland gateways toward Hainan, but the ferry is not in downtown Zhanjiang. The key mainland ferry points are in Xuwen / Hai’an at the southern end of the Leizhou Peninsula. This is a separate transfer of roughly 140-180 km depending on route and terminal, so it should not be treated like a normal city taxi.
Haikou port guidance lists frequent crossings between Haikou and Hai’an / Xinhai / Xiuying port areas. Travel China Guide lists Haikou Xinhai Port to Hai’an Port departures through the day with a 1-hour sailing time and CNY 41.5 fare, while the Xiuying Port table also lists Hai’an Port sailings at CNY 41.5. Actual passenger handling, check-in, weather and vehicle loading can make the total door-to-door time much longer than the sailing time.
For Zhanjiang travellers, the practical choices are:
- take a train or coach to Xuwen / Hai’an, then ferry to Haikou;
- book a through coach if available for your date and station;
- use a private car only if you understand the ferry terminal and vehicle rules;
- fly Zhanjiang to Haikou only if timing and price beat the surface route.
If the Hainan ferry is the reason you are in Zhanjiang, stay near Zhanjiang West only if your onward rail/coach leaves from there. Stay in Xiashan if your ticket uses Zhanjiang Railway Station or South Coach Station. Stay in Xuwen if the ferry departure is early or weather disruption is possible.
Local Buses
Zhanjiang’s city buses are useful but district-specific. Most first-time visitors will use them for Xiashan seafront movement, Chikan / Haitian trips, Mazhang / Zhanjiang West access, university areas and local shopping districts. A public transport summary lists common city routes at CNY 2, Zhanjiang West express routes such as 64K / 66K at CNY 3, and longer island or district routes at higher staged fares such as CNY 2-12 or more.
Payment can include cash, local transport cards and mobile payment methods on many routes, but the practical foreign-visitor advice is to carry small cash backup and set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before arrival. For fixed-time rail or airport movements, use buses only when the stop and route are clear in a Chinese map app.
Useful bus scenarios:
- Xiashan hotel to Zhanjiang Railway Station or South Coach Station;
- Chikan hotel to Haitian Station / airport express stop;
- Zhanjiang West to city by 61K / 64K / 66K when time is flexible;
- daytime sightseeing along the seafront or to Huguangyan when routes are direct.
Avoid buses for late arrivals, large luggage, tight train changes and the first airport transfer if you cannot read the stop names.
Taxis and DiDi
Taxis and DiDi make Zhanjiang much easier because the transport hubs are spread out. The city tariff published in railway-station guidance and local taxi summaries is consistent enough for planning: CNY 7 for the first 2 km by day, CNY 8.5 for the first 2 km at night, CNY 2.3/km from 2-15 km by day, CNY 2.8/km at night, and higher long-distance pricing after 15 km. Local taxi summaries also list waiting charges around CNY 24/hour and a 20% night uplift after 23:00 on distance beyond the start fare.
Practical taxi ranges:
| Trip | Planning range | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Zhanjiang West to central Chikan | About CNY 25-45 | Good first-arrival default from high-speed rail |
| Zhanjiang West to Xiashan / Zhanjiang Railway Station | About CNY 35-70 | Allows station-to-station movement without route confusion |
| Zhanjiang Railway Station to Xiashan hotel / seafront | About CNY 10-35 | Short city rides; meter should be simple |
| ZHA airport to Chikan | About CNY 90-150 | Compare with airport express CNY 35 |
| ZHA airport to Xiashan | About CNY 110-180 | Taxi is faster for groups, late arrivals or awkward hotel locations |
| Zhanjiang city to Xuwen / ferry area | Often CNY 350+ | Usually better by coach/rail unless private transfer is intentional |
DiDi is the practical ride-hailing app in mainland China. The app listing says inbound users can use an English interface, global mobile-number login, bilingual communication with drivers and multiple payment options including international bank cards. For Zhanjiang, set up DiDi before arrival and save hotel names in Chinese. For station pickups, follow the signed pickup area rather than choosing a random curb location.
For taxis, ask for the meter on city rides. For airport or Xuwen trips, compare the app quote, airport express fare and private-transfer price before committing.
Price Guide
| Transport item | Current planning price | How to use it |

| Longer district / island bus routes | Often staged fares such as CNY 2-12 or more | Check route board or app before boarding |
| Airport express to Xiashan / Chikan / Mazhang | From CNY 35 | Best value for solo airport transfers |
| Airport express to Wuchuan | From CNY 20 | Useful for Wuchuan-side hotels |
| Airport express to Leizhou | From CNY 55 | Check if routed via Haitian transfer |
| Airport express to Xuwen | From CNY 90 | Useful for ferry planning if schedule fits |
| Taxi start | CNY 7 day / CNY 8.5 night for first 2 km | Use to check city rides |
| Taxi 2-15 km | CNY 2.3/km day / CNY 2.8/km night | Station-to-hotel and station-to-station estimate |
| Taxi beyond 15 km | CNY 3.5/km day / CNY 4.5/km night in station guidance | Airport and Xuwen trips become expensive |
| Haikou-Hai’an ferry passenger fare | CNY 41.5 in published Haikou port tables | Sailing fare only; add access and check-in time |
| Zhanjiang West to Guangzhou South high-speed rail | Published second-class examples around CNY 260 | Useful for Greater Bay Area connections |
Best Areas to Stay
Xiashan / Zhanjiang Railway Station / Seafront
Choose Xiashan for the older rail station, seafront, South Coach Station area and easy access to hotels around the southern urban core. It is a strong base for normal-speed trains, ferry-prep travel, sea-view stays and visitors who want city life rather than a station-only overnight. Airport express to Xiashan is available, and taxis from the airport are manageable for groups.
Chikan / Haitian / Wanda / Convention Area
Choose Chikan if your travel depends on airport express stops, Haitian Coach Center, central business hotels or a balanced city base. The airport express has multiple Chikan stops, and Haitian Road 100 is an important coach / city terminal reference. This area works well for business travellers and for people who want airport logistics without sleeping in Mazhang.
Mazhang / Zhanjiang West Railway Station
Choose Mazhang or Zhanjiang West when high-speed rail is the main reason for the stay. This is not always the most atmospheric area for a first tourist visit, but it prevents early-train stress. It also works if you arrive late by high-speed rail and leave again the next morning.
Wuchuan / Airport Side
Stay near Wuchuan or the airport only for an early flight, late arrival or Wuchuan-side work. For sightseeing in Zhanjiang, this is usually too far from the city districts. If using airport-side hotels, confirm whether they offer airport pickup and whether DiDi supply is reliable at your arrival time.
Xuwen / Hai’an Ferry Area
Stay in Xuwen only when the ferry to Haikou is the priority. Weather, holiday traffic and vehicle-loading queues can affect ferry plans, so Xuwen is a practical buffer before a morning crossing. It is not a good base for seeing Zhanjiang city.
First-Time Checklist
- Confirm whether your ticket says ZHA, Zhanjiang West or Zhanjiang Railway Station.
- For flights, check the airport express route by district: Xiashan, Chikan, Mazhang, Wuchuan, Leizhou or Xuwen.
- Use the airport hotline 0759-3163851 or Zhanqi Group channel for same-day airport express confirmation.
- Choose the hotel area by next departure: Xiashan, Chikan, Mazhang, Wuchuan or Xuwen.
- Save Chinese addresses for Zhanjiang West, Zhanjiang Railway Station and your hotel.
- Use DiDi or taxi for station-to-station transfers unless you have a relaxed schedule.
- Add long-distance taxi rules, tolls and night uplift to airport or ferry estimates.
- For Hainan, decide whether the next stage is coach, rail, private car or ferry terminal stay.
- Carry small cash backup for buses and short local rides.
- Avoid accepting unofficial airport or station car offers without a written or app price.

Zhanjiang Transport Hub FAQ
Which airport serves Zhanjiang?
Zhanjiang is served by Zhanjiang Wuchuan International Airport (ZHA). It is outside the urban core, so most travellers should compare the CNY 35 airport express to Xiashan or Chikan with taxi or DiDi, especially for late arrivals.
Which train station should I use in Zhanjiang?
Use Zhanjiang West Railway Station for high-speed rail. Use Zhanjiang Railway Station in Xiashan for normal-speed trains, Xiashan hotels and South Coach Station access. The two stations are not the same place, so check the Chinese station name before booking.
How much is a taxi in Zhanjiang?
A useful planning tariff is CNY 7 for the first 2 km by day, CNY 8.5 at night, CNY 2.3/km by day from 2-15 km, and higher long-distance pricing after 15 km. Airport trips can cost far more than city rides because the airport is outside the main urban core.
Is DiDi useful in Zhanjiang?
Yes. DiDi is the practical ride-hailing app for Zhanjiang station, airport and hotel transfers. Set it up before arrival, add your payment method and save destinations in Chinese.
Where should I stay for easy transport in Zhanjiang?
Stay in Xiashan for the old rail station and seafront, Chikan / Haitian for airport express and coach access, Mazhang / Zhanjiang West for high-speed rail, Wuchuan for airport-side plans, and Xuwen only for Hainan ferry logistics.
