For a first visit, the main decision is not distance; it is traffic and pickup reliability. NAIA can look close to Makati on the map, but a trip to Ayala Center, Poblacion, Salcedo, Legazpi, Rockwell or BGC can take very different times depending on terminal, skyway use, rain, rush hour and event traffic. Arrival Strategy

If you land at NAIA and sleep in Makati, the simplest arrival plan is usually Grab or an airport taxi. Grab’s NAIA airport page explains that riders should enter the destination, check the pickup location and follow in-app airport directions. It also gives terminal-specific pickup instructions, including Grab booths or pickup points at NAIA Terminal 2 and Terminal 4, plus pickup instructions around Terminal 1 departure areas. This is important because airport pickup zones are not the same as ordinary curbside pickup.

Coupon taxis are useful when you want a fixed fare before leaving the terminal. They cost more than many metered rides, but they reduce the risk of meter arguments. Current airport booth prices should control your trip, but older published NAIA coupon guides put Makati around P330-P440. For a first arrival with luggage, that can be worth paying compared with negotiating after a long flight.

Yellow metered taxis can be reasonable when queues are short and traffic is light, but the meter can climb in congestion. Local reporting in 2026 said airport taxi flag-down rose to P115 for the first 500 meters, with no change to succeeding 300-meter and waiting-time charges. That means the final cost depends heavily on terminal road queues, EDSA traffic and whether the driver takes skyway/toll roads.

If you are arriving in the daytime and travelling light, you can use NAIA P2P buses where the active route fits, then transfer at One Ayala, PITX, Cubao, Alabang or another node. The One Ayala-NAIA route has had changes over time, so do not rely on an old article alone. Use UBE Express, One Ayala or Make It Makati’s latest advisory before planning around it.

NAIA to Makati

Grab from NAIA

Grab is the easiest app-based airport option for many visitors. It provides upfront fares for GrabCar, airport pickup instructions, cash/cashless payment options and in-app safety features. The practical cost for NAIA to Makati often sits in a broad P300-P600 range depending on terminal, demand and traffic, but live app pricing should control the trip. During heavy rain, Friday evening traffic or late-night demand, the quote can move higher.

Use the exact Makati district in your destination. “Makati” is too broad. Salcedo Village, Legazpi Village, Poblacion, Ayala Center, Rockwell, Chino Roces, Circuit Makati and San Antonio can route differently. If your hotel is near Ayala Avenue or Greenbelt, choose the correct lobby entrance because one-way streets and basement driveways matter.

Coupon and yellow taxis

Coupon taxis charge fixed fares by destination zone. The booth issues a slip, and you keep it until arrival. This is often the easiest taxi for travellers without local data or for groups who want price certainty. Makati coupon fares have been published around P330-P440 in older NAIA guides, but the booth table at the terminal is the only figure to trust on the day.

Yellow metered taxis are airport-accredited metered taxis. They are normally more expensive than ordinary white taxis but more airport-focused. After 2026 fare adjustments, airport taxi flag-down was reported at P115 for the first 500 meters. Because Makati is close but traffic-prone, a yellow taxi can be good at quiet hours and frustrating at peak times.

UBE Express and airport P2P

UBE Express airport buses are useful, but route status changes. Philippine Beach Guide’s UBE route roundup still shows the NAIA-One Ayala route as temporarily suspended based on older advisories, while newer Make It Makati and One Ayala social updates report UBE Express service at One Ayala with daily NAIA routes. When active, One Ayala-NAIA is ideal for travellers staying near Ayala Center, Glorietta, Greenbelt or MRT-3 Ayala. When inactive, use Grab/taxi from the airport or take a currently active UBE route to another node and transfer. For most first-time visitors with luggage, Grab or coupon taxi remains the most robust default.

MRT-3 in Makati

MRT-3 is Makati’s rail spine along EDSA. The stations that matter most are Guadalupe, Buendia, Ayala and Magallanes. Ayala is the main stop for Ayala Center, One Ayala, SM Makati, Glorietta and Greenbelt. Buendia is useful for the northern CBD, Gil Puyat/Buendia side, some offices and EDSA Carousel connections. MRT-3 is not an airport train. NAIA has no direct MRT station. The closest useful rail-airport transfer logic is taxi/Grab to Taft or Magallanes, or airport bus to an interchange where it makes sense. For Makati stays, MRT-3 is best after arrival: Ayala to Ortigas, Shaw, Cubao, North Avenue or Taft; Buendia to Ayala; Guadalupe to Ayala in minutes when road traffic is heavy.

Avoid peak-hour luggage on MRT-3 if possible. Trains can be crowded, station stairs and footbridges are tiring with large bags, and Makati sidewalks can be uneven around construction and mall driveways. Use rail for commuting and sightseeing, not for a stressful first airport transfer unless you know the system.

One Ayala and P2P Buses

One Ayala is the heart of Makati road transfers. Ayala Land Offices describes it as a 2.8-hectare development at 1 Ayala Avenue and says the transport hub serves northbound and southbound buses, AUVs and jeepneys, with direct connection to MRT. It is also linked physically to the Ayala Center environment, making it more comfortable than older curbside terminals.

P2P Bus Philippines lists One Ayala and nearby Makati points on several routes, including Puregold Noveleta-One Ayala, SM Masinag-One Ayala, Vista Mall Somo-One Ayala, Calamba-Makati, Imus-Circuit Makati, Las Pinas-Circuit Makati and others. These routes are useful for travellers going to Cavite, Rizal, Laguna, Alabang and suburban Manila areas without negotiating vans on the street.

One Ayala also absorbs jeepney and UV Express patterns. Current commuter guides list One Ayala as a centralized bus, P2P, jeepney and UV Express van terminal along Ayala Avenue corner EDSA, connected to MRT-3 Ayala and operating around the clock for the terminal environment, though individual routes keep their own hours. For a visitor, the main job is to identify the gate before arrival: P2P, EDSA Carousel, UV Express and jeepney routes are not the same queue.

If your itinerary includes Tagaytay, Nuvali, Imus, Bacoor, Masinag, Antipolo, Alabang or BGC, check One Ayala first. If you are going farther by provincial bus, PITX, Cubao or Pasay may be better. Makati is a strong transfer base, but not every Luzon bus starts there.

EDSA Carousel and Local Movement

EDSA Carousel is the busway layer that runs along EDSA and connects Makati with PITX, Pasay, Ortigas, Cubao, Quezon City and Monumento-side movement. Non-government guide pages list stops including Ayala, Buendia and Guadalupe, and the EDSA Busway system is widely used as a faster alternative to ordinary mixed-traffic buses on EDSA. For Makati, Ayala/One Ayala is the most visitor-friendly Carousel stop.

Use EDSA Carousel for north-south movement where MRT-3 is crowded, closed, delayed or inconvenient. Use MRT-3 when you need predictable rail movement and can handle stairs/queues. Use jeepneys/UV for short last-mile travel inside Makati, but ask your hotel or office contact for the exact route because jeepney signage can be hard for first-time visitors.

Makati’s local trip names matter. Ayala Avenue, Paseo de Roxas, Makati Avenue, Chino Roces, Gil Puyat, Kalayaan, JP Rizal, Rockwell, Circuit and Poblacion are different transport worlds. A taxi from Salcedo to Poblacion may be short; a trip from Legazpi to Rockwell can be slow at rush hour; BGC is nearby but not the same city grid.

Walking is excellent in the Ayala Center-Greenbelt-Glorietta-SM Makati area, decent in Legazpi/Salcedo, mixed in Poblacion, and difficult along some EDSA edges. Use elevated walkways where available, especially around Ayala MRT and One Ayala.

Taxis, Grab and Airport Fares

For most airport arrivals, compare three choices: Grab upfront fare, coupon taxi fixed fare and yellow metered taxi. Grab is usually easiest with data. Coupon taxi is easiest without data or for groups wanting a dispatch slip. Yellow taxi can be good at quiet times but is more sensitive to traffic and meter time.

For ordinary city rides inside Makati, Grab is often the simplest option because building entrances and drop-off points are precise. If taking a street taxi, insist on meter use and avoid drivers who quote a large flat fare for short CBD trips. For late-night Poblacion, Rockwell, BGC or airport trips, app rides are safer and easier to document.

Do not accept unsolicited private car offers inside arrivals. NAIA has official taxi, bus and ride-app pickup channels. If someone approaches you before the booth/app pickup point, continue to the official queue. This is not alarmism; it is the same practical rule used at airports worldwide.

If your destination is outside Makati, include tolls and routing in the decision. Alabang, Cavite, Quezon City, Ortigas, BGC, Pasig and Tagaytay can involve skyway or expressway choices. Ask whether tolls are included in a fixed fare or added separately.

Best Areas to Stay

Ayala Center and Legazpi Village

This is the easiest transport base for first-time visitors. You are close to Ayala MRT, One Ayala, Greenbelt, Glorietta, SM Makati and many hotels. Airport taxis and Grab are straightforward, and walking between malls and offices is easier than in most of the Manila area.

Salcedo Village

Salcedo is good for business travellers, dining and a quieter CBD feel. It is not directly on MRT, so you will often use Grab or walk/taxi to Ayala or Buendia. It is excellent if your meetings are in the CBD and you do not need frequent cross-city transit.

Poblacion and Makati Avenue

Poblacion is strong for nightlife and boutique hotels. It is less polished for luggage and peak-hour rides. Use Grab at night, and allow extra time for airport trips because small streets can clog quickly.

Rockwell and Guadalupe Side

Rockwell is comfortable and self-contained, while Guadalupe gives better MRT and jeepney access. Choose Rockwell for comfort; choose Guadalupe only if the transit connection matters more than hotel atmosphere.

Airport Side

Stay near NAIA only for late arrivals, early departures or one-night layovers. It is not the best Makati base unless your trip is airport-heavy.
