Amman Transport Hub

Amman is Jordan’s main transport hub, and the practical first rule is to ignore distance-only airport logic. Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) is the real passenger gateway for Amman and Jordan. Marka / Amman Civil Airport (ADJ) is much closer to the city but is not the normal international arrival point for visitors. The working network is Queen Alia Airport, Sariyah Airport Express, QAIA airport taxis, Royal Jordanian City Terminal shuttle, Amman Bus and BRT, JETT intercity buses, Careem, Uber, yellow taxis, rental cars and a limited Hejaz Railway heritage layer.

This guide is written for the transport decisions a visitor actually makes: how to get from AMM to a hotel, whether the Airport Express is enough, when to use Tabarbour / North Complex, when JETT Abdali or 7th Circle matters, how to move between West Amman, Downtown and Abdali, what taxi/app fares are realistic, and why rail is not a normal way to reach Petra, Aqaba or Irbid.

Arrival Strategy

If you land at Queen Alia Airport

Queen Alia International Airport is the correct airport anchor. The official QAIA site provides arrivals, departures, airlines, route map and “To and From” airport guide access. Royal Jordanian’s QAIA transfer page says airport taxis are available outside the arrivals hall main exit, and that public buses run regularly from in front of both terminals. Sariyah’s Airport Express page gives the working budget link from the airport to Amman.

For a first arrival, choose one of four options:

1. Airport Express if you are price-sensitive, arriving daytime/evening, and can finish by taxi from Tabarbour/North Complex or another stop.
2. Official QAIA airport taxi if you want a controlled fixed airport ride, have luggage, arrive late, or stay in a hard-to-explain district.
3. Uber/Careem if the app shows an available legal pickup and a clear price.
4. Hotel/private transfer if you arrive late, travel as a family, or need a driver waiting with your name.

Do not choose the airport transfer only by map distance. Amman traffic, hills and hotel districts matter. Downtown, Abdali, Jabal Amman, Sweifieh, 7th Circle and Abdoun are different taxi/bus outcomes.

If you arrive at Marka / Amman Civil Airport

Marka is close to the city, but most visitors will never use it. It is useful for special aviation, domestic or private movements when your ticket explicitly says ADJ. If your ticket says AMM, use Queen Alia information. If your ticket says ADJ, arrange taxi/private pickup with your host because the normal tourist airport-transfer ecosystem is built around Queen Alia.

If you arrive by JETT

JETT is the most important intercity bus layer for visitors. The official JETT site and schedule show route nodes such as Abdali, 7th Circle, Tabarbour, Wehdat, Zarqa, Irbid, Aqaba, Petra, Dead Sea and King Hussein Bridge. Visit Petra specifically says JETT buses usually depart from various Amman stations and names Abdali as one of the most frequently used for Petra.

Your JETT pickup point affects where you should sleep. Abdali and Jabal Amman are good for Petra and city sightseeing. 7th Circle / Sweifieh works for airport and West Amman. Tabarbour/North Complex works for airport bus and northern routes. Wehdat works for some south/east route logic but is less convenient for many first-time tourists.

Airport Transfer Details

Sariyah Airport Express

The Sariyah Airport Express is the best budget airport transfer. Its official page lists departures from Amman North Complex and the airport arrivals station, and shows a passenger ticket price of 3.4 JOD. It also lists ticket purchase at offices at the North Station and Queen Alia Airport, or directly from the bus driver, with Visa payment available.

Use the Airport Express when:

The weak point is the final leg. North Complex / Tabarbour is not the same as most tourist hotels. Budget 3.4 JOD for the bus plus 3-6 JOD for many onward taxis inside Amman, depending district and traffic. Airmundo notes a taxi from the North Station area to the centre around 4 JOD, which is a useful anchor.

Royal Jordanian City Terminal shuttle

Royal Jordanian passengers can use the RJ City Terminal shuttle near 7th Circle. Royal Jordanian states it operates buses every 30 minutes between QAIA and its City Terminal near 7th Circle, and that the service costs 4 JOD per passenger. This is useful if your hotel is in Sweifieh, 7th Circle, Abdoun, Um Uthaina or West Amman. It is less useful if your hotel is Downtown or near Abdali unless you still plan to take a taxi onward.

QAIA Airport Taxi

QAIA Airport Taxi presents itself as the official and exclusive licensed transport service within the airport and states it operates 24/7. Royal Jordanian also points arriving passengers to the airport taxi kiosk outside the arrivals hall main exit. This is the simplest controlled option for a late arrival.

Use 22-30 JOD as a planning band for many AMM-to-Amman hotel transfers, with district, traffic, night timing and vehicle type changing the exact fare. Airport taxi boards and the kiosk price should control the final number. For Dead Sea, Madaba, Petra, Jerash or multi-city transfers, get a separate quote.

Uber and Careem at AMM

Uber publishes AMM pickup, taxi and Amman city pages, including advance reservation and airport pickup directions. Careem is widely used in the region and its app supports rides in Jordan. App rides are useful, but airport pickup rules can change. Follow the app pickup point, not a random driver’s instruction, and compare with the official airport taxi kiosk when unsure.

For a city ride after you are already in Amman, Uber/Careem often give better price visibility than street taxis. For a first airport arrival, airport taxi or booked transfer may be calmer if the app pickup point is unclear.

Amman City Buses And BRT

Amman Bus / Vision City Bus

Amman Bus and Vision City Bus are the main app-enabled city bus layer. The online portal says travelers can plan trips, view the network, and manage smart cards. The Google Play listing says the app can show fastest route, stops, times and fare, and lets users check and recharge card balance. This matters because Amman is hilly and spread out; route planning by landmarks alone is easy to get wrong.

Use Amman Bus/BRT for daytime trips when the route is direct: Abdali, University of Jordan, Sports City, Sweileh, downtown links, BRT corridor movement and some commuter destinations. Use taxi/app rides for hotel-to-door trips, late returns, luggage, and areas not directly served by a line.

BRT basics

Amman’s BRT is a useful corridor system rather than a full urban rail. AMIDEAST’s guide describes BRT use and points riders to the Amman Bus app for routes and stops. For travelers, the BRT is most useful when hotel and destination sit near the corridor. It is less useful if the final address is up a hill or deep inside a residential district.

Carry a backup plan. A city bus route can be cheap and sensible, but a missed stop, weak frequency or long hill walk can make a 3-5 JOD taxi the better choice.

Local fare planning

Published app-store text does not always expose every fare cleanly in search results, but recent rider notes commonly place standard bus rides around 0.50-0.55 JOD. Use 0.50-0.75 JOD as a practical city-bus planning band and check the Amman Bus app/card for the exact fare before riding. For several trips, the smart card/app layer matters more than cash.

JETT And Intercity Road Travel

Abdali, 7th Circle and Tabarbour

JETT is the cleanest visitor-friendly intercity bus option. The schedule page lists route nodes and fares; for example, Abdali-Aqaba is listed at 10.00 JOD adult / 7.60 JOD child, 7th Circle-Aqaba VIP at 20.00 JOD adult / 14.20 JOD child, Zarqa-Aqaba at 11.00 JOD adult, and Irbid-Aqaba at 12.00 JOD adult. The exact fare and departure time must come from the JETT schedule on booking day.

For Petra, Visit Petra says JETT buses usually depart from various Amman stations and that Abdali is one of the most frequently used, with online booking through JETT. That makes Abdali/Jabal Amman a strong base for first-time Jordan itineraries.

Tabarbour / North Complex

Tabarbour / North Complex matters for the Airport Express and northern route logic. It is not the same as Abdali. If your airport bus drops you at North Complex, finishing to Downtown, Abdali or West Amman needs taxi/app ride. If your intercity destination is Irbid, Jerash, Ajloun or northern towns, Tabarbour may be useful.

South Bus logic and rental cars

For Dead Sea, Petra, Wadi Rum and Aqaba, JETT, private driver or rental car are the usual visitor choices. Rental car makes sense for confident drivers who need flexibility, but Amman traffic and parking can be stressful. Many travelers rent only after spending a night in Amman or use driver/tour transfers for the first leg.

Taxis, Apps And Private Drivers

Yellow taxis

Yellow taxis are common in Amman, but visitors often prefer app pricing because it reduces negotiation. If using a street taxi, ask for the meter or agree the fare before departure. For short central rides, plan 2-5 JOD. For West Amman to Downtown, plan 4-8 JOD depending traffic. For longer cross-city rides, plan 6-12 JOD.

Uber and Careem

Uber and Careem are the easiest app layer for many visitors. Uber’s Amman page allows reservations up to 30 days ahead, and the AMM pages cover airport pickup/taxi products. Careem’s app store listing describes rides, scheduled pickup and private car options in Jordan among other markets. Use them for hotel-to-restaurant, late returns, West Amman movement, and station-to-hotel transfers.

For airport arrival, compare app price with official QAIA Airport Taxi. For airport departure, app rides from the city to AMM often work well if requested early and confirmed.

Private drivers

Private driver is useful for Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea, Jerash, Madaba, Mount Nebo and multi-stop day trips. Use these planning bands:

Rail Reality

Hejaz Railway is not normal city rail

Amman has rail history, not a normal rail network for visitors. Visit Jordan’s railroad page explains the Hejaz Railway heritage. The Ministry of Transport partner page lists Jordan Hejaz Railway and describes a network with Amman, Zarqa, Mafraq and other historic route points. However, for normal travel to Petra, Aqaba, Irbid, the airport or city hotels, buses, taxis, cars and flights are the actual tools.

Do not plan Amman like a European rail hub. The Hejaz station is cultural and heritage-relevant, and limited passenger/tourism context may exist, but it is not the backbone for a first-time Jordan route.

When rail matters

Rail matters if you are visiting the Hejaz Railway heritage site, researching transport history, or following special tourism operations. It does not replace JETT, Airport Express, taxi, Careem/Uber or rental car for normal itineraries.

Best Areas To Stay For Transport

Abdali / Jabal Amman

Best for first-time visitors, restaurants, Downtown access, Abdali JETT logic and balanced city movement. Good if Petra/JETT and sightseeing are both part of the plan.

7th Circle / Sweifieh

Best for West Amman, Royal Jordanian City Terminal shuttle, airport-road access, shopping and business hotels. Less walkable for old-city sightseeing.

Downtown / Roman Theatre side

Best for budget hotels, old-city walking and markets. Airport bus and JETT may require extra taxi legs, and hills can be tiring.

Tabarbour / North Complex side

Best only when airport bus, northern routes or specific local addresses matter. Not the most comfortable first tourist base.

Airport hotel / Madaba side

Best for late arrivals, early flights or a first night before driving south. Not ideal for a full Amman city stay.

First-Time Checklist

1. Use AMM / Queen Alia as the main airport, not Marka, unless your ticket explicitly says ADJ.
2. Use Airport Express for budget airport access; fare anchor 3.4 JOD.
3. Use official QAIA airport taxi for late or luggage-heavy arrival.
4. Budget 22-30 JOD for many AMM-to-Amman airport taxi/private transfers.

9. Do not rely on rail for normal Jordan travel.

Common Planning Mistakes

Choosing Marka because it is closer

Marka is close on a map, but Queen Alia is the main airport for normal passenger travel. Always plan by ticket code.

Taking Airport Express without planning the last taxi

The bus is cheap, but most travelers still need a taxi/app ride from North Complex or another stop to the hotel.

Booking a hotel far from the JETT node

For Petra or Aqaba bus departures, the difference between Abdali, 7th Circle and Tabarbour matters early in the morning.

Expecting urban rail or a normal rail network

Amman has buses, BRT corridors, taxis, apps and road terminals. Rail is heritage/limited context, not everyday city transport.
