Bengaluru Transport Hub
Bengaluru is a city where transport quality depends on getting the first decision right. Kempegowda International Airport is far north of the city, Namma Metro is useful but does not yet reach the airport, railway departures are split across KSR Bengaluru, Yesvantpur/Yeshwantpur, SMVT Bengaluru and other stops, and intercity buses may use Majestic, Shantinagar, Satellite/Mysuru Road or a private boarding point. A generic “take urban transit” answer is not enough.
The current air gateway is Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru, code BLR. For most travellers the airport choice is Vayu Vajra airport bus versus taxi/app ride. Vayu Vajra is the important BMTC airport-bus system, connecting BLR with city corridors such as Majestic, Hebbal, Electronic City, Whitefield-side routes, JP Nagar, Jayanagar, HSR and other routes depending on the current schedule. Taxi, Uber, Ola or hotel transfer is simpler for late arrivals, luggage, families, business parks and addresses away from the bus stop.
For a subway-map app user, Namma Metro is the city anchor. The Purple and Green lines are useful for many trips, and interchange at Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Stop Majestic is crucial. But Namma Metro is not the airport train. A traveller landing at BLR needs Vayu Vajra, taxi/app ride or private transfer first, then metro only when it helps the city leg.
Use this guide as an arrival plan. First identify the entry point: BLR airport, KSR Bengaluru, Yesvantpur, SMVT Bengaluru, Cantonment, KR Puram, Majestic/Kempegowda bus terminal, Shantinagar, Satellite/Mysuru Road or a private operator boarding point. Then choose between Vayu Vajra, Namma Metro, BMTC, KSRTC, Indian Railways, Ola, Uber, taxi or private transfer.

Arrival Strategy
Bengaluru transport starts with geography. BLR airport is not just outside downtown; it is far enough that airport transfer is a real part of the trip. A hotel in MG Road, Indiranagar, Koramangala, Whitefield, Electronic City, Manyata Tech Park, Hebbal or Jayanagar produces different airport logic.
If arriving by air, compare Vayu Vajra with taxi/app ride. Vayu Vajra is excellent when the route and stop fit the final district. Taxi or app ride is better late at night, with heavy luggage, for first-time arrivals, or when the hotel is far from the bus stop.
If arriving by train, read the stop name carefully. KSR Bengaluru is central and near Majestic. Yesvantpur is north-west. SMVT Bengaluru is east/north-east and can be better for KR Puram/Whitefield-side logic. Cantonment can be useful for central/north-central addresses. The wrong stop can add an hour.
If arriving by intercity bus, follow the ticketed terminal. Majestic/Kempegowda bus terminal, Shantinagar, Satellite/Mysuru Road, Anand Rao Circle, Madiwala, Silk Board, Kalasipalyam and private operator offices can all appear in Bengaluru travel plans.
BLR Airport And City Transfers
Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru is the main airport for the metropolitan region. The official airport transport page should be checked for current bus, taxi and pickup rules. The airport is north of Bengaluru near Devanahalli, so road time depends heavily on final district and traffic.
Vayu Vajra is the main public airport-bus system. BMTC's Vayu Vajra information should control route and fare details. Airport buses can be very useful for Majestic, Hebbal, Electronic City, Whitefield, HSR, JP Nagar, Jayanagar and other corridors when the route fits. BMTC's stop-wise Vayu Vajra fare sheet gives practical 2025 anchors such as around INR 280 for Majestic/Kempegowda bus terminal, around INR 290 for Bengaluru Dairy Circle, and many longer south/east airport routes around INR 300-380 or more depending on stop.
For taxi planning, Rome2Rio gives Bengaluru Airport to Bengaluru as about 35.3 km and taxi INR 1,100-1,400. Uber's BLR route examples show useful airport anchors such as about INR 906 to Bangalore North, INR 1,050 to Bangalore East and INR 1,182 to Bangalore South. Use INR 1,000-2,000 as a practical BLR-to-city taxi/app planning band for many central districts. Whitefield, Electronic City, late-night trips, larger vehicles or heavy traffic can be higher.
Namma Metro does not currently reach BLR airport. Do not plan an airport metro ride unless an official airport metro extension is open for the exact travel date. Use airport bus or road transfer first.
Airport Transfer Options
| Option | Best for | Planning cost | Watch out | |—|—|—|—| | Vayu Vajra | Budget airport transfer on BMTC airport routes | BMTC fare/route controls the day | Stop distance, luggage and late-night frequency | | Uber | App-tracked airport ride | App estimate; INR 1,000-2,000 central planning band | Surge and pickup zone can change cost | | Ola | App ride alternative | App estimate before booking | Availability and airport pickup rules vary | | Airport taxi | Direct airport-to-hotel movement | Rome2Rio benchmark INR 1,100-1,400; practical band wider | Confirm fare/toll/parking expectations | | Hotel transfer | Families, late arrivals, business travellers | Quote before booking | Higher but simpler | | Rental car with driver | Business parks, multi-stop days, Mysuru road trips | Quote by time, distance and waiting | Self-drive is rarely ideal for city-only stay |
The simplest airport rule: Vayu Vajra if the stop fits; app taxi or hotel car when the final address is away from the route or timing matters.
Namma Metro For Subway Map Users
Namma Metro is the rail system behind the Bengaluru Subway Map search. The core network is Purple Line and Green Line, with Majestic as the main interchange. Purple Line is important for Whitefield/KR Puram-side and west/east movement. Green Line is important for north-south movement through Yeshwanthpur/Malleswaram, Majestic, Chickpet, National College, Jayanagar and beyond.
For visitors, important stops include Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Stop Majestic, MG Road, Cubbon Park, Vidhana Soudha, Indiranagar, Baiyappanahalli, KR Puram, Whitefield Kadugodi, Yeshwanthpur, Sandal Soap Factory, Jayanagar, Banashankari and Silk Institute depending on route and current map.
For fares, use BMRCL's official fare page. Practical planning for ordinary city metro trips should use INR 10-90 after the 2025 fare revision, with the official fare table, app or stop ticketing controlling the exact value. The New Indian Express reported in February 2026 that the present minimum fare is INR 10 up to 2 km and the maximum is INR 90 beyond 25 km.
The airport caveat is essential: Namma Metro does not yet serve BLR airport. The metro is an inside-city solution, not the airport transfer.
Metro Strengths And Limits
Namma Metro is strongest when both endpoints are stop-near. It is useful for MG Road, Cubbon Park, Indiranagar, KR Puram, Whitefield, Majestic, Jayanagar, Yeshwanthpur and many commute corridors. It can save a large amount of time compared with road traffic.
The metro is weaker for airport transfers, deep residential layouts, many business parks, Sarjapur Road, parts of Koramangala, Electronic City unless connected by bus/taxi, and hotels far from stops. A stop on the map is not the same as a comfortable walk with luggage.
For first-time visitors, choose a hotel near a metro stop only if the actual appointments are also rail-friendly. Otherwise taxi/app ride time still dominates.
KSR, Yesvantpur, SMVT And Rail Planning
Indian Railways and IRCTC/NTES are the sources for train planning. Bengaluru has several important stops, and the ticketed stop controls the trip.
KSR Bengaluru City, often shown as SBC, is the main central rail hub near Majestic. It is useful for central hotels, metro interchange and city bus connections. Yesvantpur/YPR is north-west and important for many long-distance trains. SMVT Bengaluru, Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal, is east/north-east and can be better for KR Puram/Whitefield/airport-side logic. Bengaluru Cantonment and KR Puram can also matter.
Do not assume all trains leave from KSR. A taxi to the wrong stop can be costly in Bengaluru traffic. Use IRCTC for booking and NTES for live status.
SMVT matters more than older generic Bengaluru rail advice suggests. It is useful for KR Puram, Baiyappanahalli, Whitefield-side addresses and some airport-side road logic, while KSR remains better for Majestic and central-city transfers. For a traveller with luggage, the printed rail code can be more important than the city name.
For rail-to-airport, compare stop location carefully. Yeshwantpur, SMVT and KSR have different road times to BLR. Vayu Vajra may be useful from some corridors; app taxi is simplest with luggage.
BMTC, KSRTC And Intercity Buses
BMTC is the city bus operator, while KSRTC handles many state/intercity services. Bengaluru bus planning often uses different terminals by destination and operator.
Majestic/Kempegowda bus terminal is the central city/interchange anchor near KSR and metro. Shantinagar is important for many long-distance and airport-bus contexts. Satellite/Mysuru Road terminal is relevant for Mysuru and southwest corridors. Private operators often use Madiwala, Silk Board, Anand Rao Circle, Kalasipalyam, Tin Factory, Marathahalli or other pickup points.
For intercity travel to Mysuru, Coorg/Madikeri, Mangaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Goa, Hampi/Hospet or Kerala routes, use KSRTC and the ticketed boarding point. Do not assume “Bengaluru intercity bus hub” means Majestic.
From any intercity bus stop to hotel, taxi/app ride is usually easiest with luggage. Metro can help when the terminal is near Majestic or a stop.
City Buses, Airport Buses And Local Movement
BMTC city buses cover far more of Bengaluru than the metro. They are essential for airport corridors, tech parks and districts away from rail. Vayu Vajra airport buses are the most visitor-relevant BMTC service.
Ordinary BMTC routes can be useful but require stop and direction confidence. Traffic can slow buses, but bus lanes and direct airport routes can still be practical.
For fare planning, check BMTC official sources. Vayu Vajra fares are higher than ordinary city bus fares and route-dependent: use around INR 280 for Majestic, around INR 200-260 for some Hebbal/Yelahanka-side airport trips, and INR 300-380+ for many longer city corridors. Metro, BMTC and KSRTC are separate systems.
Taxis, Ola, Uber And Price Planning
Taxis and app rides are essential in Bengaluru because the city is spread out and not every business or hotel district is metro-near. Ola and Uber are the most familiar app options for many visitors.
Use these INR planning bands. Short city app rides can be INR 150-350. Cross-city rides can be INR 400-900. BLR airport to many central districts can be INR 1,000-2,000. Airport to Whitefield, Electronic City, Sarjapur Road or far southern/eastern districts can be INR 1,500-3,000 or more depending on traffic and vehicle.
For airport rides, app estimates should control the day. Airport tolls, parking and pickup rules can affect final cost. For business trips, a hotel car may be worth the extra cost.
Car Rental And Regional Trips
Do not self-drive for a simple Bengaluru city stay unless there is a strong reason. Traffic, parking and unfamiliar roads make app rides and metro easier.
Use a car with driver for Mysuru, Nandi Hills, Hampi/Hospet, Coorg, industrial visits, multi-stop tech park days or airport-to-meeting itineraries. Confirm tolls, waiting time, driver allowance, night charges and parking.
For Mysuru, compare train, KSRTC intercity bus and private car. For airport-to-Mysuru direct travel, a private car may be practical if the flight time aligns.
Best Areas To Stay For Transport
| Area | Best for | Transport trade-off | |—|—|—| | MG Road / Cubbon Park | First visit, central business, metro | Good metro/taxi balance, airport still far | | Indiranagar | Restaurants, Purple Line, east access | Great city base, traffic still matters | | Majestic / KSR | Rail, metro interchange, budget logistics | Busy, less polished for leisure | | Whitefield / KR Puram | Tech parks, Purple Line extension | Far from old centre and airport can still take time | | Koramangala / HSR | Startups, restaurants, south-east | Taxi/app heavy, metro not always close | | Electronic City | Tech/business, south | Long airport transfer; choose only if meetings are there | | Hebbal / Manyata | Airport-side business | Good for BLR/Manyata, weaker for city sightseeing | | Airport hotels | Early flights | Poor city base unless flight timing dominates |
For most visitors, stay near the real appointment or a metro stop. Bengaluru traffic punishes vague “central” hotel choices.
Practical Itineraries
BLR Airport To MG Road Or Cubbon Park
Use Vayu Vajra if the route and stop fit, or use Uber/Ola/taxi for direct transfer. Plan INR 1,000-2,000 for many airport-to-central app/taxi rides.
BLR Airport To Whitefield
Use app taxi, hotel transfer or a Vayu Vajra route if it fits. Whitefield can be a long road transfer, especially at peak times.
BLR Airport To Namma Metro
There is no airport metro stop. Use airport bus or taxi first, then metro only if the city leg is stop-friendly.
KSR Bengaluru To Hotel
Use metro from Majestic if the hotel is near a stop. Use taxi/app ride with luggage or for deep neighbourhood addresses.
SMVT Bengaluru To City Centre
Use taxi/app ride, city bus or metro connection depending on current route and luggage. SMVT is not the same as KSR.
Bengaluru To Mysuru
Compare train from the correct rail hub, KSRTC intercity bus from the correct terminal, and private car. Terminal choice matters as much as ticket price.
Common Mistakes
The first mistake is assuming Namma Metro reaches BLR airport. It does not.
The second mistake is confusing KSR, Yesvantpur and SMVT. Follow the stop printed on the train ticket.
The third mistake is treating Majestic as every bus terminal. Shantinagar, Satellite/Mysuru Road and private pickup points may be correct instead.
The fourth mistake is underestimating airport distance. BLR transfers can take long even when the map looks simple.
The fifth mistake is choosing a hotel far from both metro and the real appointment. In Bengaluru, location is transport strategy.
