Canberra Transport Hub
Canberra is not a subway city in the usual sense. The useful rapid-transit line is Canberra light rail, which runs between Gungahlin and the City, and the rest of the visitor network is buses, intercity buses, taxis, rideshare and regional rail. That matters for a subway-map app page: the honest article should explain the light rail corridor, then show where airport, long-distance bus and rail arrivals sit outside that corridor.
Canberra is also a city where the first transfer often decides the whole trip. Canberra Airport (CBR) is close to the city, but the terminal is not on light rail. The intercity bus hub at Jolimont Centre is central on Northbourne Avenue, while the intercity rail point is in Kingston at Burke Crescent. A visitor who assumes these are one combined terminal will waste time. A visitor who understands Airport, City, Jolimont and Kingston can plan cleanly.
Fast Facts
Canberra Airport (CBR) is the main airport for the ACT. The airport's own transport section lists taxis, taxi fare calculator, rideshare, public transport and shuttle services, rental cars, chauffeur services and passenger pickup/drop-off. For most central Canberra hotels, the transfer is short enough that taxi or Uber is often the easiest first ride, especially at night or with bags.
Transport Canberra is the local bus and light rail operator. The light rail network currently runs from Gungahlin to the City. Transport Canberra says services between Gungahlin and the City run every 5 to 15 minutes depending on time of day, while its using-light-rail page says services can operate up to every 5 minutes. CMET lists 14 stops along the 12 km track, including Gungahlin Place, Dickson Interchange and Alinga Street.
The 2026 MyWay+ fare structure is specific. Transport Canberra lists adult MyWay+ peak fare at AUD 3.41 and off-peak fare at AUD 2.70. Off-peak discounts apply from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., after 6:00 p.m. on weekdays, and all day weekends and public holidays. The weekday daily cap is AUD 10.16 and the weekend/public-holiday daily cap is AUD 6.22. From 8 April until 30 June 2026, the adult monthly cap is 20 paid trips, which means a maximum of AUD 68.20 at peak fare or AUD 54.00 off-peak if all counted trips are off-peak.
Canberra's rail point is Canberra Station in Kingston. Transport NSW lists the stop at Burke Crescent, Kingston, with facilities including taxi rank, commuter car park, bike racks, toilets and accessibility features. The main intercity bus hub is Jolimont Centre on Northbourne Avenue. Murrays lists its Canberra Express Booking Office at 65/67 Northbourne Ave, while Greyhound lists Canberra at Bay 4, Jolimont Centre, 65/67 Northbourne Ave.

Canberra Airport Arrivals
Canberra Airport is close to the central city, but it is not a rail airport. The practical airport choices are taxi, Uber or another rideshare app, rental car, private transfer, shuttle where available, or a local public transport connection if the timing and destination match. Canberra Airport's own transport page should be the starting source for pickup rules because airport forecourts and rideshare zones can change.
The airport taxi page gives useful visitor estimates. It lists approximate fares from the airport to City at AUD 25 during 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday to Friday excluding public holidays, and AUD 27 at other times. It also gives examples for Phillip, Belconnen, Gungahlin and Tuggeranong, with higher amounts outside the weekday day window. These are estimates only, but they are more useful for travellers than generic taxi benchmarks.
Uber is available for CBR airport trips. Uber's Canberra Airport page says riders should follow app instructions for pickup and notes average UberX trips from Canberra Airport lasting 15 minutes cost about AUD 34. That is not a fixed fare, but it gives a realistic sense of airport-to-city cost. Rideshare can be easiest for hotels outside Civic, Barton, Braddon or the light rail corridor.
Public transport from the airport can work, but it is not as simple as cities with a terminal rail station. If the final destination is Civic, Braddon, ANU, Gungahlin or a light rail stop, check Transport Canberra's trip planner before travel. If the trip requires a long wait or a transfer with luggage, taxi or rideshare is often worth the difference.
Light Rail And Bus Network
Canberra light rail is the city's metro-style corridor. It runs between Gungahlin and the City, with major stops including Gungahlin Place, Dickson Interchange and Alinga Street. This line is useful for travellers staying in Gungahlin, Dickson, Braddon, Civic or near Northbourne Avenue. It is not a direct airport line, and it does not serve Kingston rail directly.
Alinga Street is the City-end light rail anchor. For hotels in Civic, Braddon and the northern edge of the centre, it is the stop that matters most. Dickson Interchange is useful for restaurants, local buses and north-side stays. Gungahlin Place is the northern town-centre terminus. If a visitor's hotel is away from this corridor, buses, taxi or rideshare become more important.
Transport Canberra is planning light rail extension work toward Woden. The Stage 2 page describes Light Rail to Woden as building on Stage 1 and forming a north-south spine from the south side through the city and onward to Gungahlin. For the current article, keep future expansion separate from current travel instructions. A traveller today should plan around the operating Gungahlin-City line.
The bus network fills the gaps. Buses connect suburbs, the airport area, Kingston, Parliamentary Triangle, Woden, Belconnen, Tuggeranong and other town centres. For airport, Kingston rail and suburban hotels, buses may matter more than light rail. Use the real-time journey planner rather than a static map if timing is important.
MyWay+ Fares
MyWay+ is the fare system to explain to visitors. Transport Canberra says MyWay+ calculates the cheapest possible fare per passenger based on eligible concession and daily or monthly fare caps. It also says all Transport Canberra fares include a free 90-minute transfer period, so riders can connect to different bus or light rail services using the same ticket for free within 90 minutes of first validation.
The adult peak fare is AUD 3.41 and the adult off-peak fare is AUD 2.70. The weekday daily cap is AUD 10.16. The weekend and public holiday daily cap is AUD 6.22. For short stays, the daily cap is often the most important number because a sightseeing day can involve multiple bus and light rail rides.
The temporary monthly cap from 8 April to 30 June 2026 is important for long stays. Transport Canberra says the monthly fare cap is 20 paid trips during that period. For an adult, that makes the maximum monthly cost AUD 68.20 if all counted trips are peak, or AUD 54.00 if all counted trips are off-peak. This is a date-sensitive rule, so future updates should be checked before content refreshes.
Visitors should not use old US-dollar benchmarks or third-party fare conversions. Canberra fares are in AUD and controlled by Transport Canberra. If the trip mixes regional long-distance bus or NSW TrainLink services, those are separate tickets.
Kingston Rail Point
Canberra Station in Kingston is the rail point for NSW TrainLink services. Transport NSW lists the stop at Burke Crescent, Kingston. The station has taxi rank, car park, toilets, wheelchair accessible facilities and staffed hours shown on the Transport NSW stop page. It is not in Civic and it is not beside the light rail corridor.
For Sydney by rail, NSW TrainLink is the relevant operator. The rail journey is scenic and useful for some travellers, but many business travellers choose long-distance bus because buses between Canberra and Sydney can be frequent and central. The best choice depends on departure time, luggage, hotel location and whether the traveller values rail comfort or long-distance bus frequency.
From Civic or Braddon to Kingston, taxi or rideshare is usually the simplest luggage move. Bus may work in daylight with light bags, but check the route. If arriving by train late or leaving early, do not assume a quick light rail connection; Kingston requires its own ground leg.
Jolimont Intercity Buses
Jolimont Centre is the key intercity bus hub. Murrays lists its Canberra Express Booking Office at 65/67 Northbourne Ave, Canberra ACT 2601. Murrays' Canberra-Sydney timetable lists Jolimont Centre, Bay 6-7, 65 Northbourne Ave. Greyhound lists Canberra at Bay 4, Jolimont Centre, 65/67 Northbourne Ave, Canberra ACT. VisitCanberra also lists Murrays at Jolimont Centre, 65-67 Northbourne Avenue.
This makes Jolimont the easiest intercity bus point for visitors staying in Civic, Braddon or near the light rail. It is much more central than Kingston rail for many hotel locations. For Sydney, compare Murrays and Greyhound by departure time, fare, luggage rules and arrival point in Sydney. Murrays serves Sydney Central and Sydney Airport on many runs; Greyhound also uses Canberra and Canberra Airport for some services, including seasonal snow service references.
Long-distance bus pickup bays matter. A ticket that says Bay 4 is not the same as Bay 6-7. Arrive early enough to find the correct bay, especially before dawn or when roadworks affect Northbourne Avenue. The intercity bus hub is central, but it is still operator-specific.
Taxi, Uber And Rideshare
ACT taxi fares are regulated by official maximum fare instruments. The 2026 ACT maximum fares document includes updated maximum fares for periods ending 30 June 2026 and beginning 1 July 2026. It lists waiting time rates and fare components by taxi category. For a reader article, the airport's own route estimates are more digestible, while the ACT fare instrument is the authority behind meter rules.
Canberra Airport estimates City at AUD 25 in the weekday day window and AUD 27 at other times. It estimates Phillip at AUD 36 and AUD 41, Belconnen at AUD 46 and AUD 52, Gungahlin at AUD 48 and AUD 54, and Tuggeranong at AUD 56 and AUD 63. These are not fixed fares, but they help travellers sense-check taxi and rideshare quotes.
Uber's airport page gives an average UberX benchmark of about AUD 34 for a 15-minute trip from CBR. Use the app quote for the final price because surge, route, pickup point and vehicle type can change it. Other rideshare services may be available, but the safest wording is to name Uber clearly and refer to app availability for others.
Taxi or rideshare is especially useful for CBR to Barton, Kingston, Manuka, Griffith, the Parliamentary Triangle, Woden, Belconnen, Tuggeranong, early morning Jolimont trips, and late rail arrivals at Kingston. Light rail is best for Northbourne Avenue, Dickson, Braddon, Civic and Gungahlin.
Best Areas To Stay
Civic and City Centre are the best all-purpose bases. They put Jolimont intercity buses, Alinga Street light rail, restaurants, offices and many museums within practical reach. For first-time visitors without a car, this is usually the safest choice.
Braddon is strong for restaurants and light rail access. It works well for people who want evening options and can still walk or ride into Civic. It is also convenient for Jolimont if the intercity bus trip is part of the itinerary.
Barton, Parkes and Parliamentary Triangle hotels are best for government, galleries, museums and work visits. They are less tied to light rail, so taxi/rideshare or local buses matter more. Airport transfers are usually simple by car.
Kingston and Manuka are good for restaurants, lake access and proximity to the rail point, but they are not the same as Civic. If the trip starts with a Sydney train, Kingston can be useful. If the trip starts with a long-distance bus at Jolimont, Civic or Braddon may be better.
Gungahlin and Dickson work if the trip is north-side or light-rail focused. They are not the most convenient for airport or Kingston rail, but the light rail gives a reliable link to the City.
Airport-area hotels are best for early flights, late arrivals and business parks near Majura or Brindabella. They are not ideal for sightseeing unless the traveller has a car or is happy with taxi/rideshare.
Step-By-Step Arrival Plans
For one adult landing at CBR and staying in Civic, compare taxi, Uber and any suitable Transport Canberra route in the planner. If the taxi estimate is around AUD 25 to AUD 27 and the bus timing is awkward, direct car is often the better first move.
For a light rail-focused stay in Braddon or Gungahlin, use taxi or bus from the airport to the City or a suitable interchange, then light rail as needed. Do not expect a direct airport light rail ride.
For a Sydney intercity bus trip, stay near Civic or Braddon and depart from Jolimont Centre. Check whether the ticket says Murrays Bay 6-7 or Greyhound Bay 4. Save 65/67 Northbourne Ave as the core address.
For a Sydney train trip, plan around Canberra Station at Burke Crescent, Kingston. From Civic, taxi or rideshare is usually easier than forcing a luggage-heavy bus connection.
For a long stay, use MyWay+ and watch fare caps. The 90-minute transfer window makes bus-light rail combinations more forgiving than single-ride thinking suggests.
Common Mistakes
The first mistake is calling Canberra a subway city. It is a light rail and bus city, with one operating light rail corridor from Gungahlin to the City.
The second mistake is using an unofficial airport page when Canberra Airport has official taxi, rideshare and transport pages.
The third mistake is mixing Jolimont and Kingston. Jolimont is the intercity bus hub on Northbourne Avenue; Kingston is the NSW TrainLink rail point at Burke Crescent.
The fourth mistake is assuming airport public transport is always the best value. Canberra Airport is close enough that taxi or Uber can be the practical first choice.
The fifth mistake is ignoring fare caps. MyWay+ daily and monthly caps can change the cost of repeated rides.
