Cesena is a practical Romagna transport base rather than a simple airport town. It sits on the Bologna-Ancona-Adriatic rail corridor, has a compact historic centre, and connects by Start Romagna buses to Cesenatico, Forli, Bertinoro, Savignano, Ravenna-side routes and the inland valleys. The airport choice is more nuanced than the map suggests: Forli Airport is closest, Bologna Airport has the strongest flight network, Rimini Airport can be useful for Adriatic arrivals, and sometimes Ravenna or coastal day trips decide the best onward mode.
For a first visit, think in three layers. The first layer is airport access: Forli, Bologna or Rimini. The second is Cesena rail station and the nearby bus/taxi cluster, which is where most arrivals become local movement. The third is Romagna regional travel: Start Romagna buses, trains along the Adriatic line, and car routes toward the coast, hills and San Marino. When those layers are separated, Cesena becomes easy to navigate.
The old centre is walkable, but the transport anchor is not Piazza del Popolo. Cesena rail station sits north of the historic core near Piazza Giorgio Sanguinetti and Piazzale Karl Marx. The Start Romagna Punto Bus is listed at Piazzale Karl Marx, 71, and Radio Taxi Cesena has ranks by the rail station, Piazza Almerici and Bufalini Hospital. That cluster matters more for arrival planning than a generic “city centre” label.

Arrival Strategy
Forli Airport is the closest airport, but it is not automatically the best airport for every traveller. It works well when your flight actually lands there and the timing is good. The easiest no-car path is usually airport to Forli rail station or bus network, then Forli to Cesena by rail or bus. A taxi or NCC is also realistic because the distance is short compared with Bologna or Rimini.
Bologna Airport is the best first check for flight choice. From Bologna Airport, the Marconi Express links the terminal with Bologna Centrale. From Bologna Centrale, regional, Intercity and high-speed-linked rail options run toward Cesena on the Adriatic corridor. This route has more kilometres than Forli, but it is often more reliable for international arrivals because Bologna has more flights and stronger rail frequency.
Rimini Airport is useful when the flight lands there directly, when the trip includes the Riviera, or when Cesena is one stop in an Adriatic itinerary. The usual no-car route is airport/local transfer to Rimini rail station, then rail to Cesena. For late arrivals, compare taxi/NCC with the last train because the coastal-airport timing can thin out in the evening.
If you are staying outside Cesena, solve the last leg before choosing the airport. Cesenatico, Bertinoro, Longiano, Sarsina, Mercato Saraceno and rural accommodation all change the answer. Cesena city is easy by rail; the surrounding Romagna countryside is where taxi or car rental becomes more important.
Forli Airport to Cesena
Forli Luigi Ridolfi Airport is close enough that it feels tempting to use a taxi, and often that is sensible. Central Cesena is roughly 20-25 km by road depending on the exact address. For a standard taxi or NCC, use a planning range around EUR 45-75, then ask for the actual quote before departure. Late-night pickups, waiting time, larger vehicles and rural addresses can change the price.
Without a car, use Forli as the transfer node. Check the airport ground-transport page for the current airport-to-city or airport-link arrangement, then connect at Forli rail station or the Forli bus terminal. Forli-Cesena by rail is a short regional hop. Start Romagna buses can also be useful depending on exact stops and timing.
Forli Airport is especially attractive for a short business stay, a hotel near Cesena station, or travellers with a direct flight. It is less attractive if the flight schedule is weak or if the itinerary already needs Bologna rail connections. Do not choose it only because it is nearest; choose it when flight time and ground transport both work.
If you arrive late into Forli, pre-book the transfer. A close airport can still be awkward if buses are finished and taxis are not waiting in the number you expect. Send the flight number, hotel address, luggage count and passenger count when requesting the quote.
Bologna Airport to Cesena
Bologna Airport is the strongest practical airport for many visitors. The Marconi Express connects the airport with Bologna Centrale, and Bologna Centrale is one of northern Italy’s major rail hubs. From there, trains toward Cesena, Forli, Rimini, Ravenna-side connections and the Adriatic line are straightforward to compare.
The no-car route is airport people mover to Bologna Centrale, then rail to Cesena. Budget the airport link separately from the rail ticket. The rail leg from Bologna to Cesena often runs around 60 to 80 minutes depending on service and stops. If your ticket involves a faster service plus a regional connection, keep the booking rules clear because not every missed local connection is protected.
Bologna is the best airport for long-haul connections, late-morning arrivals, travellers who want frequent rail choices, and trips that also include Bologna, Modena, Florence or northern Italy. It is weaker for very late arrivals if the last Cesena train has gone. In that case, a private car from Bologna Airport to Cesena can easily sit in the EUR 170-260 planning band, depending on time and vehicle.
For families, compare the total cost of Marconi Express plus rail for every passenger against a pre-booked car. For one traveller, rail usually wins. For four people with luggage after a late flight, the comfort gap may matter more than the fare difference.
Rimini Airport to Cesena
Rimini Federico Fellini Airport is a good alternative when your route is tied to the Adriatic coast. It is closer than Bologna by road, and it can be convenient for Cesenatico, Rimini, Riccione, San Marino and beach-based itineraries. For Cesena city, the practical no-car route usually goes through Rimini rail station.
Check the airport-to-station bus or taxi connection first, then the Rimini-Cesena rail timetable. The rail section is normally straightforward because both cities sit on the Adriatic corridor, but the airport-to-station piece and the last train decide whether the route feels easy.
A taxi or NCC from Rimini Airport to central Cesena is a regional transfer, not a short city ride. Use a planning range around EUR 80-130, then confirm the quote. If the final destination is Cesenatico or a coastal hotel, Rimini Airport may beat Cesena rail logic entirely.
Cesena Rail Station
Cesena rail station is the main arrival point for no-car travel. It sits by Piazza Giorgio Sanguinetti, close to Piazzale Karl Marx and the Start Romagna bus facilities. RFI lists Cesena with 3 passenger tracks, which matches its role as a solid regional/intercity stop rather than a giant terminal.
For Bologna, Forli, Rimini, Ravenna connections, Ancona and the Adriatic side, rail is usually the cleanest first option. Bologna gives the airport and high-speed rail network. Rimini gives the coast and San Marino access. Forli is the close airport and neighbouring city. Ravenna may require a rail or bus comparison depending on route and timing.
The historic centre is walkable from the station area, but allow 15 to 25 minutes depending on your destination and luggage. Piazza del Popolo, the Malatestiana Library and the Rocca Malatestiana are not difficult, but the first arrival with bags can feel longer than the map suggests. Use a taxi if it is raining, late, hot, or if the hotel is beyond the old centre.
For tickets, keep operators separate. Trenitalia covers the rail leg. Start Romagna covers buses. A rail ticket to Cesena does not make local buses free unless a specific integrated product says so. Validate paper tickets and keep digital tickets ready for inspection.
Punto Bus and Start Romagna
Start Romagna is the bus operator visitors need in Cesena. Its services cover the urban network and many regional routes in the Forli-Cesena, Ravenna and Rimini basins. The key passenger office is Punto Bus Cesena at Piazzale Karl Marx, 71. Start Romagna lists normal opening hours from Monday to Saturday, 7:00 to 19:00, with closure on Sundays, public holidays and the local patron day.
The Punto Bus is useful for buying tickets, checking route questions, dealing with lost property and understanding whether a route is urban, extraurban or seasonal. It is near the station area, so it belongs in arrival planning. If you arrive by rail and need a bus to a hotel, university building, hospital, Cesenatico, Sarsina or an inland village, this is the practical place to orient yourself.
Start Romagna fares changed from 1 June 2026. The fare guide lists simple tickets by zones: 1 zone is EUR 2.00 and valid 60 minutes; 2 zones are EUR 3.00 and valid 75 minutes; higher zone counts cost more and have longer validity. That matters because older web pages and screenshots may still show lower prices. Use the current Start Romagna fare guide for the journey date.
Tickets can be bought through official channels such as Punto Bus, authorised retailers, apps or onboard card payment where available. Validate when boarding if the ticket requires it. For a visitor staying only in central Cesena, a few 1-zone tickets may be enough. For Cesenatico, Sarsina, Ravenna-side parks or multi-town days, count the zones rather than assuming the city fare applies.
Taxis, NCC and Ride-Hailing
Radio Taxi Cesena is the main local taxi contact to save: 0547 610710. The service publishes 24-hour availability and lists taxi points at Piazzale Sanguinetti beside the rail station, Piazza Almerici and the main entrance of Bufalini Hospital. The station-side rank is the most important for travellers.
Use taxis for station-to-hotel luggage, late arrivals, hospitals, business parks, Forli Airport, rural restaurants, Cesenatico when buses are inconvenient, and early departures. Inside the historic centre, walking is usually easier once bags are dropped.
For airport transfers, ask for a quote before travel. Forli Airport to central Cesena may be around EUR 45-75. Rimini Airport can be around EUR 80-130. Bologna Airport is a much longer transfer and may be around EUR 170-260. These are planning bands, not fixed municipal fares; vehicle size, waiting, night time and final address matter.
Ride-hailing should be treated as uncertain. Apps may show limited supply outside the biggest Italian cities. For a flight, train or rural pickup, Radio Taxi Cesena or an NCC booking is safer than hoping an app car appears on demand.
Getting Around Central Cesena
Cesena’s centre is compact and pleasant on foot. Piazza del Popolo, the Malatestiana Library, the cathedral, Rocca Malatestiana and central restaurants are best handled by walking. The station area is slightly outside the most atmospheric streets, but still close enough for a normal arrival.
Buses help with the university campus, Bufalini Hospital, outer hotels, residential districts, park-and-ride areas and connections to the coast or nearby towns. For a city-only stay, do not overcomplicate the local network. Choose a hotel either in the centre for walking or near the station if the trip is rail-heavy.
Driving inside the centre is not the best default. ZTL-style restrictions, one-way streets, parking zones and event closures can turn a short hop into a nuisance. If travelling by car, choose accommodation that explains parking clearly.
Regional Routes and Day Trips
Cesenatico is one of the most natural trips from Cesena. Bus and rail/bus combinations can work, but schedules vary by season and day. In summer, coastal services are more useful; outside peak season, check returns carefully. A taxi can be reasonable for a small group, especially late in the evening.
Ravenna and Rimini are rail-friendly from the wider Romagna network, though the exact route may require checking whether the fastest option is direct rail, a change, or a bus. Rimini is also the gateway for San Marino; from Cesena, you normally compare rail to Rimini plus San Marino bus against driving.
For Forli and Bertinoro, bus, rail and taxi all have roles. Forli is easy by rail. Bertinoro and hill/wine-country stops are more car-friendly because the final climb and evening return are the hard parts. For Sarsina, Mercato Saraceno and the Savio valley, Start Romagna buses can be useful, but car rental gives much more flexibility.
Mirabilandia and Safari Ravenna are examples where Cesena can serve as a rail/taxi or bus base, but the final connection should be checked on the attraction and Start Romagna pages. Several visitor pages reference Radio Taxi Cesena from the station; for budget travel, line schedules and seasonal shuttles matter more.
Where to Stay
Stay near the station if the trip is about airports, early trains, Bologna connections or one-night logistics. The area is practical, with buses, taxis and Punto Bus close by. It is less atmospheric than the old centre but saves time.
Stay in the historic centre if Cesena itself is the focus. This gives the best walking access to restaurants, sights and evening life. The station transfer is still manageable, especially by taxi with luggage.
Stay with parking or road access if the trip is built around Romagna countryside, Cesenatico, Bertinoro, San Marino, business parks or family visits. In that case, a central old-town hotel without parking can create daily friction.
First-Day Plans
If you land at Forli Airport in daytime, compare taxi with the airport-to-Forli-station link plus rail or bus to Cesena. For one person with time, the public route can work; for luggage or late arrivals, book a taxi.
If you land at Bologna Airport, take Marconi Express to Bologna Centrale, then rail to Cesena. On arrival, decide between walking, taxi and bus based on luggage and hotel location.
If you land at Rimini Airport, get to Rimini rail station, then rail to Cesena, or book a taxi/NCC if the timing is poor. For coastal accommodation, Rimini may be better than routing through Cesena first.
If you arrive by rail, use Cesena station as the anchor. The taxi rank and bus network are nearby, and the old centre is walkable for light luggage.
Common Mistakes
The first mistake is choosing Forli Airport only because it is closest. It is excellent when the flight and ground link work, but Bologna often wins on flight choice and rail frequency.
The second mistake is using old Start Romagna fares. From 1 June 2026, the 1-zone single ticket is EUR 2.00, so older EUR 1.50 references are outdated for current planning.
The third mistake is assuming all Romagna trips use the same ticket. Cesena city rides, Cesenatico, Sarsina, Ravenna-side attractions and airport links may require different zone counts or different operators.
The fourth mistake is sleeping in the old centre while planning several early station departures. The centre is lovely, but station-side hotels are easier for airport and rail logistics.
Practical Fare Guide
Use euros and current operator tables. Start Romagna’s June 2026 fare guide lists 1 zone at EUR 2.00 for 60 minutes, 2 zones at EUR 3.00 for 75 minutes, 3 zones at EUR 4.00 for 90 minutes and progressively higher zone prices after that. For most ordinary Cesena urban trips, one zone is the planning baseline.
Bologna Airport requires a separate airport-link fare on Marconi Express plus the rail fare from Bologna Centrale to Cesena. Forli Airport may involve an airport bus or local link plus a short rail or bus ride, unless you use a taxi. Rimini Airport adds the airport-to-station step plus rail.
Taxi prices should be quoted for the route. Short station rides are local taxi trips. Airport transfers and coastal/hill destinations are regional transfers. For a group, compare the total bus/rail fare and inconvenience against a quoted car.
