Chengdu Transport Hub

Chengdu is a two-airport city, and that is the first rule of every transport plan. Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) is the older airport close to the urban core. Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) is the large newer airport far to the south-east. Both can be reached by Chengdu Metro, but the route, travel time, taxi cost and best hotel area are different.

For a subway-map app article, Chengdu needs more than a generic “metro is available” sentence. Line 10 and Line 19 matter for Shuangliu. Line 18 and Line 19 matter for Tianfu. Chengdu East is the major high-speed rail hub. Chengdu South is an airport-metro and business-district interchange. Chengdu West is useful for western rail and Yaan-style routes. Xinnanmen and Chadianzi remain important intercity bus terminals for scenic and regional buses.

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) is about 16 km south-west of central Chengdu and remains useful for many domestic and regional flights. The official Shuangliu airport site lists metro, bus, taxi, airport special line, long-distance long-distance bus and scenic-area direct bus options under airport transport. In 2026, Shuangliu's own notices also matter because airlines and terminal processes can change.

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) is much farther from the core. Sichuan transport guidance says passengers can take Metro Line 18 between Tianfu International Airport and the city, with the South rail hub to Tianfu Airport North trip as fast as 37 minutes in the airport-rail context. Chengdu Rail's official site lists the operating network in 2026, including Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 17, 18, 19, 27, 30, tram Rong 2 and the Ziyang S3 line. It states Line 18 runs between Chengdu South and Tianfu Airport North, while Line 19 runs from Jinxing to Tianfu Airport North. It also states Line 10 runs from Wuhou Temple to Xinping and Line 30 reaches the Shuangliu Airport T2 East area.

For fares, Chengdu Metro is distance-based and starts at CNY 2 on ordinary local trips, with airport trips costing more by distance. CTU Shuangliu Arrivals

CTU is the easier airport when the destination is central Chengdu, Wuhou, Tianfu Square, Chunxi Road, Kuanzhai Alley, Chengdu South, or a hotel on the south-west metro side. It is close enough that taxi or Didi is not outrageous, but metro is usually the most predictable budget option.

Metro Line 10 is the classic Shuangliu airport line. It serves Shuangliu Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 and connects toward the city through Taipingyuan, where passengers can transfer to Line 3 and Line 7. Chengdu's airport-line explainer also says Line 19 serves Shuangliu Airport T2 East, which creates a faster airport-to-airport or south-west-to-Tianfu option for some trips.

For most visitors landing at CTU, the first choice is Line 10 plus an interchange. Use Line 10 for Wuhou and Taipingyuan connections, then transfer to Line 3, Line 7 or other lines for Chunxi Road, Tianfu Square, Wenshu Monastery, Kuanzhai Alley or Chengdu East. If luggage is heavy or the hotel is not station-friendly, take Didi or taxi.

Taxi/Didi from CTU to central Chengdu often sits around CNY 60 to CNY 100, depending on exact district, traffic, time and pickup. A hotel near Wuhou can be less; a hotel in the far north or east can be more. Use the live app quote or official taxi meter as the final price.

TFU Tianfu Arrivals

TFU is the airport that changes Chengdu planning most. It is far enough from the core that road transfers can be costly and traffic-sensitive. The best public option is usually Metro Line 18 or Line 19, depending on the destination and current service pattern.

Sichuan transport guidance says Line 18 links Tianfu International Airport with Chengdu South and can make the South rail hub to airport run in as little as 37 minutes. The airport boarding point is the L1 transfer hall in the transport center. This is the key official detail: TFU is built for rail transfer, not only taxis.

Line 19 is important because it connects the airport corridor with Shuangliu Airport T2 East and western/northern Chengdu-side routes. Chengdu Rail lists Line 19 from Jinxing to Tianfu Airport North. Chengdu airport-line guides also describe direct trains between Shuangliu T2 East and Tianfu terminals, which can help passengers moving between airports or staying on the west/south-west side.

Taxi or Didi from TFU to central Chengdu is a real intercity-style airport ride. Use CNY 120 to CNY 200 as a practical planning band for central districts, with more possible for north, west or late-night trips. Airport buses can be useful for some fixed city stops, but metro is more predictable when operating.

Chengdu Metro Airport Lines

Chengdu Metro is the backbone of airport movement. Line 10 serves Shuangliu. Line 18 serves Tianfu. Line 19 links the Tianfu corridor with Shuangliu T2 East and other western connections. Line 30, opened as part of the expanding network, reaches the Shuangliu Airport T2 East station area, which strengthens south-west airport access.

Line 18 is the airport express-style route for TFU. It links Chengdu South, Jincheng Plaza East, Century City, Western China International Expo City, Sancha and Tianfu airport stations. TravelChinaGuide describes Line 18 as connecting Chengdu South with Tianfu International Airport, with the whole line taking about 50 minutes and a fare around CNY 10 for the full airport route.

Line 10 is the everyday CTU route. It is slower than a taxi for some door-to-door trips but far more reliable during traffic. If the hotel is on Line 3 or Line 7, Line 10 plus Taipingyuan interchange is often the cleanest plan.

For airport-to-airport movement, check Line 19 first. A taxi between CTU and TFU can be expensive and exposed to traffic. Line 19 may be more predictable if the timetable and luggage situation fit.

Metro Fares And Payment

Chengdu Metro fares start at CNY 2 and rise by distance. Most central city rides are cheap, while airport rides are higher because the distances are long. A CTU-to-central route may often fall around CNY 4 to CNY 7; a TFU-to-city route may be closer to CNY 10 depending on station pair.

Payment is usually through station machines, QR code, Chengdu Metro app, Tianfutong card, Alipay or WeChat systems where available. International visitors should keep some cash or alternative payment backup because app setup and foreign-card linking can be uneven.

The metro is not 24 hours. Before a late arrival or early departure, check the first/last train on the Chengdu Metro official app or station page. If the metro does not fit the flight time, use Didi, official taxi or an airport bus/night bus if it serves the right district.

Rail Hubs

Chengdu East is the main high-speed rail hub. It is the first rail station to check for Chongqing, Xian, Guiyang, Kunming, Jiuzhaigou corridor services and many national high-speed routes. China Airline Travel's station layout says Chengdu East has metro Line 2 and Line 7 on lower levels, taxi pickup areas, airport bus access and west/east squares.

Chengdu South is both a rail hub and an airport-metro hub. It connects Line 1, Line 7 and Line 18, and is the city-side anchor for many TFU trips. For business districts around Financial City, Century City and south Chengdu, Chengdu South may be more practical than Chengdu East.

Chengdu West is important for west-side rail, including Yaan and Chengdu-Pujiang corridor trips. It connects with Line 4 and Line 9 and also links with tram Rong 2 in the wider station context. If a rail ticket says Chengdu West, do not go to East or South.

The older Chengdu station / north rail hub still exists and appears on some tickets and routes. Use the exact station name and Chinese characters from the China Railway ticket. Chengdu has too many rail hubs for the English word “station” to be safe.

Intercity Bus Terminals

Chengdu intercity buses are important for scenic Sichuan and regional routes where rail is not the best fit. TravelChinaGuide's 2026 long-distance bus overview says Chengdu has 12 intercity bus stations, including Xinnanmen, Chadianzi and East rail hub intercity bus facilities. It notes routes toward places such as Leshan, Jiuzhaigou, Dujiangyan and other nearby cities.

Xinnanmen is also known as the Chengdu Tourism long-distance bus center. It is useful for scenic destinations and tourist routes, including Leshan Giant Buddha, Jiuzhaigou and panda/research-base style trips depending on current schedules. The Xinnanmen guide says metro access can involve Line 3 at Xinnanmen, Line 1 at Huaxiba or Line 2 at Chunxi Road depending on approach.

Chadianzi is important for west and north-west Sichuan routes. TravelChinaGuide describes Chadianzi at No. 29, Fifth Section, West Third Ring Road, Jinniu District, and notes it handles attraction routes such as Jiuzhaigou, Four Maiden's Mountain and Songpan. It is not interchangeable with Xinnanmen.

Chengdu East intercity bus facilities can matter when a rail-plus-bus transfer is planned. For every long-distance bus trip, check the terminal name, operator, departure time and destination spelling in Chinese. A taxi driver needs the exact terminal, not just “bus.”

Taxi, Didi And Road Transfers

Didi is the main ride-hailing app to check in Chengdu. It is useful for airports, late-night arrivals, rail-hub transfers, pandas/research-base trips, hotels away from metro and factory/business parks. Follow app pickup points at CTU, TFU and rail hubs; they may not be right at the first curb.

Taxi fare references place Chengdu around a CNY 10 base fare and roughly CNY 2 per km before waiting, night and route effects. That is useful for short trips, but airport trips depend heavily on distance. CTU to central Chengdu often runs around CNY 60 to CNY 100. TFU to central Chengdu often runs around CNY 120 to CNY 200.

Use official taxi ranks at the airports and rail hubs. Avoid unsolicited drivers. If the trip is long, such as TFU to the north city or Chengdu East to a far west hotel, compare Didi and metro before choosing.

For families or heavy luggage, taxi/Didi can be worth the cost. For solo travellers with manageable bags, metro is usually the better first answer.

Best Areas To Stay

Stay around Tianfu Square, Chunxi Road or Taikoo Li for a first Chengdu visit. These areas are central, food-rich and well connected by metro, though airport transfers require interchanges.

Stay near Dongmen / Chengdu East only when high-speed rail is the priority. It is practical for rail departures and Chongqing/Xian-style trips, but less atmospheric than the central leisure districts.

Stay near Chengdu South, Financial City or Century City for TFU access, business trips and south-side conference districts. Line 18 makes this side especially strong for Tianfu airport.

Stay near Wuhou or Taipingyuan if CTU access matters. Line 10 is useful for Shuangliu, and Wuhou has good city access.

Stay near Xinnanmen if scenic intercity bus departures are the trip focus. Stay near Chadianzi only when west/north-west long-distance bus routes dominate. Stay near TFU only for late arrivals or early flights, not for general sightseeing.

For CTU to central Chengdu, take Line 10 to Taipingyuan and transfer as needed, or use taxi/Didi if the hotel is not near a station. Budget CNY 60 to CNY 100 for many central road transfers.

For TFU to Chengdu South or Financial City, use Line 18. If the hotel is central, continue by Line 1, Line 7 or another transfer. Budget around CNY 10 for many TFU metro trips depending on destination.

The first mistake is mixing CTU and TFU. They are different airports with different transfer costs.

The second mistake is assuming one Chengdu airport line covers everything. Line 10, Line 18 and Line 19 solve different airport problems.

The third mistake is mixing Chengdu East, South, West and the north rail hub. The China Railway ticket controls the route.
