Colombo is Sri Lanka’s main transport decision point, but it is not a one-terminal city. The correct first plan separates Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), Colombo Fort rail, the Bastian Mawatha / Pettah long-distance road area, SLTB / NTC inter-provincial services, local buses, app rides, taxis and the southern Ratmalana (RML) airport. Most international travelers use CMB north of the city, not Ratmalana. Ratmalana is useful for some domestic/private aviation and south-side access, but CMB is the primary international arrival anchor.

The city is compact on a map and slow in traffic. A 33-35 km CMB-Fort trip can be simple by taxi or PickMe/Uber/Kangaroo, cheap by the 187 Airport – Colombo Fort Luxury Bus, or awkward if you arrive late and improvise without cash, SIM or pickup instructions. Arrival Strategy

If you land at CMB

CMB, not RML, is the first airport most international passengers should plan around. The official BIA ground-transport page says the airport offers transportation by shuttle, bus, train and taxi services, and explicitly lists Uber, PickMe, Taxi Service, public bus and porter service sections. It also names the 187 Airport – Colombo Fort Luxury Bus Service as the fast, affordable airport-city option via the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway.

Choose the first transfer by arrival time:

The airport taxi counter is a safe default if you do not have mobile data. If you use Uber or PickMe, follow app pickup instructions because CMB pickup zones can vary by terminal and ride type.

If you arrive at Ratmalana

Ratmalana sits south of central Colombo and is closer to Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia, Wellawatte, Moratuwa and the southern corridor. Use it only if your ticket actually says RML or if you are using a domestic/private flight. For central Colombo, rail and road decisions are usually still built around Colombo Fort and Pettah.

If you arrive by rail

Sri Lanka Railways calls Colombo Fort the main rail station situated in the heart of Colombo. It is the anchor for Kandy, Badulla/Ella, Jaffna, Beliatta, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and coastal connections. Use the official schedule search for train times and the official seat reservation site for reserved classes where available.

If you arrive by long-distance road service

The Colombo road-service core is not a single neat building. Bastiyan / Bastian Mawatha, Colombo Central, Pettah and nearby boarding bays are tightly clustered. The NTC page gives Bastiyan Mawatha office contacts; Bookaway lists the Bastian Mawatha address on Olcott Mawatha with Colombo Central nearby. Arrive early, ask for the route number/platform and keep your bags close.

CMB Airport Transfers

187 Airport – Colombo Fort Luxury Bus

The 187 airport bus is the best budget answer when timing fits. The BIA page says the 187 service links BIA with Colombo city through the expressway, and AirMundo describes bus 187-E03 as running daily with a journey around 50 minutes and a single fare of 130 LKR in its current guide. Some local reports and traveler snapshots show higher recent fares depending on service/route variant, so carry extra small notes and confirm at boarding.

Use 187 when going to Fort, Pettah, Colombo Central, Galle Face side with a short onward tuk/taxi, or when your hotel is close to the Fort/Pettah area. Avoid it for large luggage, late arrivals, rain, or hotels in Colombo 5-7, Wellawatte, Mount Lavinia or suburbs.

Official airport taxi

The official airport taxi service is supervised by Airport and Aviation Services Sri Lanka and operates counters in the Arrival Lobby and arrival porch with more than 600 vehicles. The official taxi page lists +94 11 226 3096, Rs. 130 per extra kilometre from the requested destination and Rs. 300 per extra drop inside the agreed journey.

This is the clean fallback for travelers without a local SIM, data, or confidence using apps after landing. Confirm the destination, vehicle class, total agreed fare, extra-drop rules and whether expressway tolls are included.

Uber and PickMe

The BIA transport page lists both Uber and PickMe. Uber’s CMB pickup page says riders receive airport pickup directions inside the app and that pickup locations may vary by terminal. PickMe’s app page describes it as a Sri Lankan ride-hailing, food delivery and logistics app and mentions airport pickups/transfers. In Colombo, PickMe is often the local default for tuk, car and van rides; Uber is useful as a comparison quote.

For a late-night airport arrival, compare official taxi, PickMe, Uber and Kangaroo. A cheaper app quote is not useful if drivers cancel or ask you to move to a confusing pickup point with luggage.

Taxi price sense-check

Prices move with fuel, tolls, time, vehicle class and app supply. Welcome Pickups gives a taxi fare structure benchmark around LKR 120 base and LKR 100 per km for city taxis, while the official airport taxi page gives extra-kilometre and extra-drop rules. Rome2Rio’s Colombo Fort-CMB page shows a higher taxi snapshot around Rs. 9,000-11,000 and a road distance of about 33.5 km. Why Fort matters

Colombo Fort is the rail heart of the country. Sri Lanka Railways’ home page explicitly identifies it as the main rail station in the heart of Colombo. It is the starting point travelers most often use for:

For exact travel days, use the schedule search first, then seat reservation if the train offers reservable classes.

Fort station transfer advice

Fort sits near Pettah and Bastian Mawatha. It is walkable on a map, but with luggage, heat, rain and traffic, a short tuk/app ride may be worth it. For airport transfers, do not plan a tight CMB arrival-to-train connection unless you have a flexible ticket or a large buffer.

Bastian Mawatha

SLTB and NTC

SLTB eSeat is the official online booking reference for Sri Lanka Transport Board services, with hotline 1315. Do not copy one route fare to the whole country; use it as proof that Bastian Mawatha is an active intercity node and that bus class matters.

Finding the right bay

Pettah can feel chaotic. Arrive 30-45 minutes early for unfamiliar long-distance departures, ask by route number and destination in writing, and avoid handing luggage to anyone who is not clearly with the operator. For late-night departures, use a taxi/app ride directly to the correct side of the road area.

Local Movement In Colombo

Tuk, bus and app rides

Inside Colombo, tuk-tuks, buses and app rides are the practical layer. PickMe is especially useful because it supports tuk/car style rides and gives a fare estimate. Uber works for car rides and airport pickup/drop in many cases. Local buses are cheap and frequent but hard for first arrivals with luggage because route boards, stops and crowding take local knowledge.

Coastal rail and suburbs

For Wellawatte, Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia and Moratuwa, the coastal rail line can be useful when the timetable fits. For hotels, restaurants and late returns, app ride/tuk is simpler. If staying south of the city, Ratmalana and coastal rail logic may matter more than Fort/Pettah.

Port City, Galle Face and central hotels

Galle Face, Colombo 1-3 and Fort hotels are straightforward from CMB by taxi/app ride or 187 plus short onward ride. Colombo 5-7, Cinnamon Gardens, Bambalapitiya and Wellawatte usually deserve a direct taxi/app ride from the airport.

Kangaroo Cabs is a major Colombo taxi company and publishes 24/7 taxi, airport transfer, business ride and tour service positioning. It is useful for airport trips where you want a phone/app-booked local company rather than waiting for app-driver acceptance.

Taxi.lk and local private transfers

Taxi.lk publishes airport transfer and Sri Lanka taxi booking services, with last-minute phone booking guidance. It is useful for longer private transfers such as Galle, Kandy, Sigiriya, Ella or multi-day itineraries. For a city-only ride, compare with PickMe/Uber/Kangaroo first.

Avoiding overpayment

Use one of four controlled choices: official airport taxi counter, PickMe, Uber, or a known company such as Kangaroo. Avoid negotiating with random arrivals-hall approaches when tired. Ask whether the quote includes expressway tolls, parking, waiting and extra drops.

Best Areas To Stay

Fort / Pettah

Best for rail departures, Bastian Mawatha/Pettah road services, short transit and budget movement. It can be intense at night and is less relaxed for a first leisure stay.

Galle Face / Colombo 1-3

Best for short stays, sea-front hotels, business and easy airport taxi access. Good balance of centrality and comfort.

Cinnamon Gardens / Colombo 7

Practical Scenarios

CMB to Fort rail departure

Use taxi/app ride unless the train is many hours later and you are comfortable with 187. Build a buffer for immigration, baggage, expressway traffic and station orientation.

CMB to Galle Face hotel

Use official airport taxi, PickMe, Uber or Kangaroo. The 187 is cheap but adds a transfer from Fort/Pettah with luggage.

Colombo to Kandy

Compare reserved train from Colombo Fort, SLTB/eSeat or NTC/private road services. Train is scenic and comfortable when seats are reserved; road service can be more frequent.

Colombo to Ella / Badulla

Reserve rail early. Use Colombo Fort as the anchor and avoid same-day CMB arrival unless your flight lands very early.

Colombo to Dambulla / Sigiriya

Bastian Mawatha/Pettah road services are common, and some travelers combine train to Polgahawela with onward road service. For luggage and comfort, private transfer may be worth it.
