Dallas Transport Hub
Dallas transport planning starts with one question: are you landing at Dallas Love Field (DAL) or Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)? Love Field is closer to Downtown Dallas, about 7.9 km northwest of the city center by project airport-distance data. DFW is much larger, farther out between Dallas and Fort Worth, and often the airport used for long-haul and connecting flights. Both airports can work well, but the transfer plan is different.
The city transit backbone is Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART). DART links Downtown Dallas, Love Field via Route 5 Love Link and Inwood/Love Field Station, DFW Airport via the Orange Line at Terminal A, local rail lines, buses, GoLink zones and regional connections. The main rail hub for visitors is Eddie Bernice Johnson Union Station, usually shortened to EBJ Union Station, at 400 South Houston Street. The intercity long-distance bus picture changed recently: Greyhound and FlixBus announced a new Dallas intercity bus terminal at 9755 Harry Hines Boulevard, across from Bachman Station, beginning December 9, 2025.
Use this Dallas Transport Hub guide to choose between DAL and DFW, plan DART airport transfers, understand Union Station, find long-distance bus bus departures, estimate taxi and Uber/Lyft costs, decide when a rental car is worth it, and choose the best hotel area for your arrival.
Quick Transport Summary
Closest major airport: Dallas Love Field, IATA DAL, ICAO KDAL, about 7.9 km northwest of Downtown Dallas.
Largest regional airport: Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, IATA DFW, ICAO KDFW, about 25 km northwest of Downtown Dallas by project airport-distance data.
Love Field transit: DART Route 5 Love Link connects DAL with Inwood/Love Field Station, served by the DART Green and Orange lines.
DFW transit: DART Orange Line serves DFW Airport Terminal A Station for Downtown Dallas. DFW also has rail options oriented toward Fort Worth and northern suburbs.
Local transit: DART buses, DART Rail, GoLink and the Dallas Streetcar. Common visitor fares include a $3 local 3-hour pass and a $6 local day pass; regional day fare is $9 after the March 1, 2026 DART regional adjustment.
Main rail hub: Eddie Bernice Johnson Union Station, 400 South Houston Street, for Amtrak, DART Rail, Trinity Railway Express and local connections.
Main long-distance bus hub: Greyhound/FlixBus Dallas intercity terminal at 9755 Harry Hines Boulevard, near DART Bachman Station, for many intercity bus schedules from December 2025 onward. Always match the ticket address to the departure.
Best planning rule: Stay Downtown or Uptown for car-light visits; rent a car or budget for rideshare when the itinerary spreads across suburbs, Arlington, Plano, Frisco, Fort Worth or multiple business parks.
Dallas Love Field (DAL)
Dallas Love Field is the easier airport for many Downtown, Uptown, Market Center, Design District and Oak Lawn trips. It is close, compact compared with DFW, and strongly associated with domestic flights, especially Southwest. For a visitor staying in central Dallas, a taxi or rideshare from DAL can be quick and often affordable enough that the transit-versus-car decision depends mainly on luggage and timing.
Ground transport at Love Field is centered on the terminal lower level and designated pickup areas. The airport states that app-based rides, peer-to-peer vehicles, private luxury vehicles and taxis use the valet pavilion and Garage C Level 1 pickup area. For rental cars, counters are in the hallway leading to baggage claim, with shuttles picking up and dropping off customers on the transportation lower level.
Use DAL when:
- your flight options are good and you are staying in Dallas rather than Fort Worth;
- you want the shortest airport-to-Downtown transfer;
- your hotel is Downtown, Uptown, Victory Park, Market Center, Oak Lawn, Design District or near Love Field;
- you prefer a simple taxi/rideshare arrival over a large-airport transfer.
For transit from DAL, use DART Route 5 Love Link. It operates between Love Field and Inwood/Love Field Station, where you can connect to the Green Line and Orange Line. DART says the Love Link pickup is along the lower-level drive outside baggage claim. From Inwood/Love Field Station, Downtown connections use Green Line or Orange Line trains toward central Dallas stations such as West End, Akard, St. Paul and Pearl/Arts District.
DFW Airport
DFW is the major international and connecting airport for North Texas. It is farther from central Dallas than Love Field, but it has a strong DART rail link. If you arrive at DFW and stay Downtown, the main transit route is the DART Orange Line from DFW Airport Terminal A Station. DART notes that Terminal A Station is reached by walkway on the lower level near Entry A10. If you land at another terminal, use the airport terminal transfer system and signs before heading to rail.
DFW is a better airport choice when:
- the flight is international, long-haul or cheaper through DFW;
- you are staying in Irving, Las Colinas, Grapevine, airport hotels or Fort Worth-side areas;
- you need rental car access for a regional itinerary;
- airline choice matters more than the transfer time.
DFW to Downtown Dallas by Orange Line is usually slower than a taxi but predictable and economical. A local DART fare can make the airport rail trip excellent value for solo travellers. A taxi, Uber or Lyft is usually better after a late flight, with heavy luggage, or when the hotel is not close to a DART station.
DFW also has other rail connections. Public transit from DFW includes DART for Dallas, TEXRail for Fort Worth-side travel and Trinity Railway Express-related regional links. This matters because a traveller going to Fort Worth should not automatically route through Downtown Dallas.
DART: Rail, Buses, GoPass And GoLink
DART is the main transit system for Dallas visitors. It covers DART Rail, buses, Dallas Streetcar, GoLink on-demand zones and regional connections. The system is most useful when your hotel and destination are near stations or direct bus routes.
Useful visitor corridors include:
- Orange Line: DFW Airport, Irving/Las Colinas, Love Field connection through Inwood/Love Field, Downtown Dallas and northern suburbs on some services.
- Green Line: Love Field connection through Inwood/Love Field, Bachman Station, Downtown Dallas, Deep Ellum/Fair Park direction and Carrollton direction.
- Red and Blue lines: Downtown Dallas, EBJ Union Station, Cityplace/Uptown connections, northern and southern corridors.
- Dallas Streetcar: Bishop Arts/Oak Cliff to Downtown-side connections, useful for specific hotel and dining plans.
- GoLink: on-demand service zones that may help in areas where fixed routes are less direct.
Common fare planning as of the current DART structure:
- Local 3-hour pass: commonly $3.
- Local day pass: commonly $6.
- Regional day pass: $9 after the March 1, 2026 regional fare adjustment.
- Regional 31-day pass: listed by DART as $192 under the 2026 regional adjustment.
- Payment: GoPass app, GoPass Tap card or ticket vending machines, depending on the stop and service.
For a short visitor stay, the day pass is often easier than thinking through each ride. For one airport transfer plus one city ride, the 3-hour pass may be enough. For trips involving Fort Worth, Denton County or Trinity Metro, check whether a regional fare is needed.
Love Field To Downtown: Best Options
Love Field to Downtown Dallas is the classic short airport transfer. The right choice depends on luggage, hotel location and time of day.
Best budget route: DART Route 5 Love Link from DAL to Inwood/Love Field Station, then Green or Orange Line toward Downtown. This is strongest for solo travellers and hotels near a DART station.
Best easy route: taxi or Uber/Lyft from the airport pickup zone. For Downtown, Uptown and Market Center, this avoids the bus-to-rail transfer and final walk.
Typical taxi benchmark: local taxi operators commonly list a Love Field to Dallas Central Business District flat fare around $26 plus passenger-related charges. Market Center is often listed lower, around $20 plus passenger-related charges. Treat the posted airport or taxi-company tariff as the control point for the day you travel.
Typical rideshare benchmark: DAL to Downtown often falls around $18-35+ before tip in normal conditions, but large events, demand pricing, weather and vehicle size can move that higher.
If arriving during rush hour, DART may be more predictable into the core, but the Love Link transfer adds handling time. If arriving late, taxi/rideshare is usually the calmer choice.
DFW To Downtown Dallas: Best Options
DFW is farther out, so the difference between rail and car is more visible.
Best budget route: DART Orange Line from DFW Airport Terminal A Station to Downtown Dallas. It is often the cleanest low-cost route for solo travellers staying near West End, Akard, St. Paul, Pearl/Arts District or another DART station.
Best door-to-door route: taxi, Uber or Lyft from the terminal. DFW taxi service is available on the lower level of Terminals A, B, C, D and E. DFW notes that guest assistants are available at taxi stands during most of the day and evening, with a phone request option after midnight for special taxi needs.
Typical taxi benchmark: Dallas taxi operators commonly list DFW to the Dallas Central Business District around $55 as a flat fare. Some private fare pages show similar downtown estimates around the high-$50 range before tip.
Typical rideshare benchmark: DFW to Downtown Dallas often quotes around $35-65+ before tip, depending on terminal, demand, tolls, traffic and vehicle type.
For groups of three or four, a rideshare can be worth the time saved. For one traveller with a backpack and a hotel near DART, Orange Line is often the best value.
EBJ Union Station
Eddie Bernice Johnson Union Station is Dallas’s main central rail hub. The Amtrak address is 400 South Houston Street, Dallas, TX 75202-4840. Amtrak describes the building as an intermodal center used by Amtrak, DART light rail, Trinity Railway Express, local buses and events.
Union Station matters for:
- Amtrak Texas Eagle service and long-distance rail planning;
- DART Red and Blue lines through the Downtown segment;
- Trinity Railway Express travel between Dallas and Fort Worth;
- connections to Downtown hotels, the West End, Reunion area and Convention Center;
- short taxi/rideshare trips to Uptown, Deep Ellum, Bishop Arts and Design District.
If you arrive by Amtrak, staying Downtown or near a DART rail line makes the transfer much simpler. If you are heading to Plano, Richardson, Irving, Las Colinas or DFW Airport, use DART rail connections rather than assuming a taxi is required. If you are heading to Fort Worth, compare Trinity Railway Express with rideshare or rental car based on schedule and final address.
Union Station is not the only useful rail stop in Dallas, but it is the one most visitors should know first because it connects national rail, regional rail and local city movement in one place.
Greyhound And FlixBus In Dallas
Dallas has historically been a major intercity bus hub, and the stop location has recently changed in an important way. Greyhound and FlixBus announced that, beginning December 9, 2025, both brands would operate Dallas schedules from a new intercity terminal at 9755 Harry Hines Boulevard, phasing out the legacy Downtown terminal on Lamar Street.
The new terminal is across from DART Bachman Station, which is served by Green and Orange Line rail. That is useful because Bachman connects toward Love Field, DFW Airport, Downtown Dallas, Carrollton, Irving and other corridors. It also means a traveller staying Downtown may need a DART ride or car transfer to reach the long-distance bus terminal.
Before leaving for a bus, check:
- the exact stop address on the ticket;
- whether the departure is from 9755 Harry Hines Boulevard, DFW Airport, Deep Ellum or another operator-specific stop;
- luggage rules and boarding cutoff time;
- whether the stop has indoor waiting, restrooms and staff;
- late-night safety and the return route after arrival.
Some Greyhound/FlixBus pages still list individual curbside stops, such as Deep Ellum or DFW Airport. Do not rely on memory from an older Dallas trip. The ticket address is the source of truth for that specific departure.
Taxis, Uber And Lyft
Dallas is a practical rideshare city because distances are large and many visitor destinations are not a simple walk from rail. Uber and Lyft are common, taxis are available at airports and major hotels, and private car services are common for business trips.
Typical planning ranges:
- DAL to Downtown: taxi flat fare commonly around $26 plus passenger-related charges; rideshare often $18-35+ before tip.
- DAL to Market Center: taxi flat fare commonly around $20 plus passenger-related charges; rideshare often $15-30+.
- DFW to Downtown Dallas: taxi flat fare commonly around $55; rideshare often $35-65+ before tip.
- DFW to Fort Worth: car prices vary widely by exact district; compare TEXRail/TRE options before booking a private transfer.
- Downtown to Arlington stadium district: often $35-80+ depending on event traffic and demand.
- Downtown to Plano, Frisco or Legacy West: often $35-75+ depending on distance and time.
Event traffic matters. Cowboys games, Rangers games, concerts, State Fair days, large conventions and storms can change the ride price and pickup time dramatically. For event districts without direct DART rail, pre-plan the return instead of assuming a rideshare will be cheap at closing time.
Car Rental And Parking
Car rental is often more useful in Dallas than in denser visitor cities. The metroplex is spread across Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Irving, Plano, Frisco, Grapevine and many business corridors. DART is strong on specific rail corridors, but a car can save time when the itinerary jumps between suburbs.
Rent a car for:
- Arlington stadium district, Six Flags or multi-stop sports trips;
- Fort Worth plus Dallas in the same short visit;
- Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Grapevine or suburban business parks;
- family trips with luggage or child seats;
- regional drives to Waco, Austin, Oklahoma or East Texas;
- hotels with free or affordable parking.
Think twice before renting for:
- a Downtown-only conference;
- a stay near DART rail with few suburban plans;
- hotels charging high overnight parking;
- event weekends where parking near venues is expensive;
- a trip where two rideshare trips cost less than a full rental day plus parking.
Love Field rental car counters sit near baggage claim, with shuttles from the transportation lower level. DFW has a large rental car center pattern with airport shuttle connections. Always compare airport pickup against a neighborhood rental if you only need a car after the first night.
Best Areas To Stay For Transport
Downtown Dallas: best for DART rail, Union Station, Convention Center, West End, business trips and car-light stays. Good for DFW Orange Line arrivals and Amtrak.
Uptown / Victory Park: good for restaurants, nightlife, American Airlines Center and short rides to Downtown. Rideshare is often easier than rail for some hotel-to-district hops.
Market Center / Medical District: useful for Love Field, medical visits, trade shows and some lower hotel rates. Check DART and shuttle access carefully.
Love Field / Bluffview: best for early DAL flights and short business stays. Less ideal for nightlife unless you plan rideshare.
Las Colinas / Irving: good for DFW access, business parks and Orange Line connections. Not the same as staying in central Dallas.
Plano / Frisco / Legacy West: best for northern business trips and sports or shopping plans in that corridor. Expect longer airport and Downtown transfers.
Fort Worth: choose Fort Worth only if your trip is actually Fort Worth-focused. It is a separate city with its own airport/rail logic even though DFW Airport serves both sides.
Regional Routes From Dallas
Dallas to Fort Worth: compare Trinity Railway Express, TEXRail-related DFW connections, rideshare and rental car. The best route depends on whether you start Downtown, DFW, Las Colinas or a suburb.
Dallas to Austin: car, long-distance bus, Amtrak and flight can all work. Car is often simplest for door-to-door flexibility; long-distance bus can be cheap; Amtrak is schedule-dependent.
Dallas to Houston: flight is fast airport-to-airport, but total time depends on airport choice. Long-distance bus and car are common budget options.
Dallas to Oklahoma City: car or long-distance bus are usually the main practical options.
Dallas to Arlington: this is a classic case where a map can mislead visitors. Stadiums and theme parks are not on a simple DART rail line, so plan rideshare, shuttle, tour or rental car.
Dallas to Waco: car is usually easiest; long-distance bus can work if the schedule and stop location match.
First Arrival Plans
Solo traveller landing at DAL, Downtown hotel: take Route 5 Love Link to Inwood/Love Field Station, then Green or Orange Line if the hotel is near rail. Use rideshare if arriving late or carrying heavy luggage.
Family landing at DAL: taxi/rideshare usually wins because the airport is close and the bus-to-rail transfer adds effort.
Solo traveller landing at DFW, Downtown hotel: take the Orange Line from Terminal A Station if timing is good and the hotel is near DART. Use taxi/rideshare for late arrivals or awkward final addresses.
Amtrak arrival at Union Station: stay Downtown or near a DART station. Use a short rideshare for Uptown, Bishop Arts, Deep Ellum or Design District.
Greyhound/FlixBus departure: check whether your ticket shows 9755 Harry Hines Boulevard near Bachman Station or another Dallas stop. Build in time for the DART ride or car transfer.
Suburban business trip: choose the hotel near the meetings, not necessarily Downtown. Dallas distances are large enough that a cheap central hotel can become expensive in rideshare time.
Tickets, Payment And Practical Setup
Install or prepare GoPass before relying on DART. Ticket vending machines are available at many rail stations, but airport and bus transfers are easier when payment is already solved. DART requires a valid fare on buses and trains, and riders should be ready to show app, card or ticket proof of payment.
For a short stay:
- use DART from DFW if staying near a rail station;
- use Love Link from DAL if travelling light and staying near Downtown rail;
- use taxi/rideshare for late arrivals, family luggage and suburban hotels;
- use Union Station as the rail anchor;
- check the exact Greyhound/FlixBus address before every long-distance bus trip;
- rent a car only when the itinerary spreads beyond strong DART corridors.
For groups, compare the whole transfer, not only the fare. Four DART fares can still be cheaper than a car, but the savings may not justify a transfer, a wait and a final walk with luggage. For one traveller, DART often gives excellent value.
