Dar es Salaam Transport Hub

Dar es Salaam Transport Hub: Airport, Rail, Buses, Ferry and Taxis

Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s busiest practical transport hub: a coastal city where airport arrivals, long-distance intercity buses, SGR and classic rail, the TAZARA line, Zanzibar ferries, port traffic, DART buses, daladala routes, taxis, bajaji and ride-hailing all meet in one wide, traffic-sensitive city. A useful Dar es Salaam Transport Hub guide has to name the actual nodes, not just say “take public transport to the centre”.

The main air gateway is Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR/HTDA) on Nyerere Road, south-west of the central waterfront. For many visitors the first decision is whether to go to Kariakoo, Kisutu, Posta/Kivukoni, Masaki, Oyster Bay, Msasani, Mikocheni, Mbezi Beach or straight to Magufuli Bus Terminal / Mbezi Luis. Those are different rides. A taxi to the ferry terminal is not the same as a taxi to the beach hotels or the long-distance bus terminal.

Dar has no citywide rapid-transit railway. Use DART / Dar Rapid Transit for BRT corridors where the route works, daladala for cheap local movement, bajaji for short hops, Bolt and ordinary taxis for direct rides, and pre-arranged cars for airport, ferry, port, late-night or luggage-heavy transfers. Uber should not be treated as a current Dar es Salaam option: Uber stopped operating in Tanzania on January 30, 2026.

Fast Facts

Need Best starting point Practical detail
Main airport Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR/HTDA) About 11-13 km by road to Kariakoo/Kivukoni central anchors; traffic can double the feel of the trip
City bus rapid transit DART / Dar Rapid Transit Useful on covered corridors; plan it as BRT, not urban rail
Cheapest local movement Daladala, DART, walking in selected central areas Many ordinary local rides fall around 500-1,000 TZS, but route and operator matter
Short hops Bajaji, boda-boda, short taxi Bajaji often works for 2,000-8,000 TZS short urban trips
Taxi app Bolt plus ordinary taxis/hotel cars Uber stopped operating in Tanzania on January 30, 2026
Main long-distance intercity bus node John Magufuli Bus Terminal / Mbezi Luis About 25-26 km by road from JNIA and about 21-22 km from Kivukoni/CBD waterfront anchor
Older bus-terminal reference Ubungo Still a major place name and transit area; do not assume it is your intercity bus terminal
Central rail anchor Dar es Salaam central rail terminal Use for TRC/classic rail context and city-centre rail orientation
TAZARA rail anchor TAZARA Station, Dar es Salaam Zambia/Tazara corridor; about 8.6 km by road from JNIA in sampled routing
SGR planning Tanzania Railways / Dar-Pugu-Morogoro-Dodoma corridor Check current TRC/SGR schedules and exact station/pickup instructions
Zanzibar ferry Azam Marine / Zanzibar ferry terminal near Kivukoni About 12.8 km by road from JNIA in sampled routing
Local harbour crossing Kivukoni-Kigamboni ferry Useful for Kigamboni, not a substitute for the Zanzibar ferry
Fare currency Tanzanian shilling (TZS) Keep small notes for daladala, bajaji, tips and short local fares

Arrival Strategy

For most international and domestic flyers, DAR is the airport code to plan around. The airport is close enough to the city that a taxi can feel simple on a map, but Dar traffic makes the destination choice important. A ride to Kariakoo is usually shorter than a ride to Masaki, Oyster Bay or Mbezi Beach; a ride to Magufuli Bus Terminal moves in a different direction from the ferry terminal; a ride to TAZARA is shorter than a ride to the northern beach suburbs.

Use this rule on the first day: choose the transfer by your next fixed point. If the next fixed point is a Zanzibar ferry, stay near Kivukoni, Kisutu or the central waterfront. If it is an early intercity bus, stay near Mbezi Luis or arrange the taxi before sleeping. If it is a business meeting in Masaki or Oyster Bay, do not book a bargain room deep in Kariakoo just because it is “central”. If it is a late international flight out, keep the return to JNIA simple.

Dar is not a city where the word “centre” solves the problem. Posta/Kivukoni, Kisutu, Kariakoo and Ilala are all central in different ways. Masaki, Msasani and Oyster Bay are better for many hotels, embassies, restaurants and coastal stays but farther from the airport and bus terminal. Mbezi Luis is excellent for intercity buses and poor for a ferry morning unless you leave very early.

First-Arrival Scenarios

For a late flight, use a booked taxi, hotel car, airport taxi or Bolt if the app supply is good at that hour. Ask the hotel for the best pickup wording because airport terminal pickup points can be busy.

For a ferry morning, sleep near Kivukoni, Kisutu, Posta, City Centre or the Azam Marine terminal area. JNIA to Azam Marine sampled at 12.8 km by road, but morning traffic and ferry reporting time can turn a short map route into a stressful start.

For an early intercity bus, sleep near Mbezi Luis / Magufuli Bus Terminal or book a car before dawn. JNIA to Magufuli Bus Terminal sampled at 26.1 km by road; the Kivukoni waterfront to Mbezi Luis sampled around 21.5-22.1 km.

For a first business visit, ask whether the real destination is in Masaki, Oyster Bay, Mikocheni, Ilala, Kurasini, Temeke, Kigamboni, Ubungo or Mbezi. Dar addresses change the transport plan more than many first-time visitors expect.

Julius Nyerere International Airport

Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR/HTDA) is the main airport for Dar es Salaam and the first airport page to check through Tanzania Airports Authority. It sits on the south-west side of the city, reached mainly through the Nyerere Road / airport corridor.

Sampled road distances from JNIA:

Destination Road-distance planning figure Use this for
Kariakoo About 11.6 km Budget hotels, markets, central road links
Kisutu / city centre side About 13.2 km Central offices, hotels, ferry-access stays
Kivukoni / Azam Marine About 12.8 km Zanzibar ferry mornings
TAZARA Station About 8.6 km Zambia/Tazara rail planning
Ubungo About 14.1 km Older bus-terminal area and city transit node
Masaki About 19.9 km Peninsula hotels, embassies, restaurants
Oyster Bay About 20.4 km Coastal hotels and diplomatic/business area
Mikocheni About 18.6 km Northern business/residential areas
Mbezi Beach About 24.7 km Beach-side northern stays
Magufuli Bus Terminal / Mbezi Luis About 25.5-26.1 km Long-distance intercity buses
Pugu / SGR-side planning About 14.9 km SGR corridor planning where the ticket points there

These are route samples, not promises about traffic. Heavy rain, port traffic, evening peaks, public holidays and road works can change the trip. For a flight departure, leave a margin.

Airport Taxi and Transfer Fares

Use the following TZS bands as practical planning ranges. They are not official tariffs. Confirm the final price in the app or with the driver before the vehicle leaves.

Route or ride Practical planning range Notes
JNIA to Kariakoo / Kisutu / Kivukoni 35,000-70,000 TZS Central-area airport ride; can rise with traffic, night timing or hotel car
JNIA to Masaki / Oyster Bay / Msasani 50,000-100,000 TZS Longer peninsula ride; traffic-sensitive
JNIA to Mbezi Beach 70,000-140,000 TZS Northern beach-area ride
JNIA to Magufuli Bus Terminal / Mbezi Luis 45,000-90,000 TZS Different corridor from the ferry/CBD ride
JNIA to TAZARA Station 25,000-55,000 TZS Shorter airport-side station transfer
Short city taxi 8,000-25,000 TZS Useful for luggage, evening rides and unfamiliar areas
Bajaji short hop 2,000-8,000 TZS Good for short daylight links; not ideal with airport luggage
Many daladala / local bus rides 500-1,000 TZS Carry small notes; fare depends on route and service
DART/BRT ride Around 750-1,500 TZS on many ordinary movements Check posted route fare before boarding

If the driver quotes a fixed airport fare, agree the exact destination: “Kariakoo” is not “Masaki”; “Kivukoni ferry” is not the Zanzibar ferry ticket office unless both sides understand the same place; “Mbezi” can mean Mbezi Beach, Mbezi Luis or another north-western area.

For transfers to the port, ferry, embassies, industrial areas or a ship/crew address, send a pin. Dar has many transport names that sound obvious but point to different parts of the city.

DART, Daladala and Local Transport

Dar has DART / Dar Rapid Transit, a bus rapid transit system. Treat it as BRT: useful where the corridor, station and destination line up, but not a full citywide rail system. No Dar es Salaam urban rail system exists for normal visitor planning.

Daladala minibuses and buses are the basic cheap local network. They are valuable for travellers who know the route or are moving with local help, but they are less comfortable with large luggage, late-night arrivals, unfamiliar addresses or tight airport/ferry timing.

Bajaji are common three-wheelers for short urban trips. They can be useful between a hotel and a nearby stage, market, restaurant or office, especially in daylight. Avoid using a bajaji as the main airport transfer with heavy bags.

Boda-boda motorcycles exist, but visitors should be selective. They can be fast for last-mile errands, but they are a poor match for heavy luggage, rain, high-value bags and unfamiliar late-night routes.

For most first-time visitors, the practical mix is: taxi or Bolt for the first transfer, DART or daladala only when the route is clear, bajaji for short local hops, and hotel/known-driver cars for early ferry, intercity bus or airport timing.

Magufuli Bus Terminal and Intercity Bus Travel

The main long-distance intercity bus anchor is John Magufuli Bus Terminal, commonly linked with Mbezi Luis. It replaced the older habit of treating Ubungo as the default intercity intercity bus point, although Ubungo remains a major place name, road node and local reference.

Use Magufuli Bus Terminal / Mbezi Luis for long-distance intercity bus planning to Morogoro, Dodoma, Arusha, Moshi, Tanga, Mwanza, Mbeya, Iringa, Songea and other Tanzania routes, depending on operator and schedule. Do not assume every intercity bus uses the same bay or reporting procedure. Ask the operator for the exact terminal, bay, reporting time and luggage policy.

Sampled route distances:

Route Road-distance planning figure Practical note
Kivukoni / central waterfront to Mbezi Luis About 21.5-22.1 km Leave early for morning intercity buses
JNIA to Magufuli Bus Terminal About 26.1 km Useful if transferring from flight to intercity bus
Kivukoni to Ubungo About 9.7 km Ubungo is still a major area but not the default intercity bus answer
Dar es Salaam to Morogoro About 251 km by sampled road routing Strong SGR/road comparison route
Dar es Salaam to Dodoma About 452 km by sampled road routing Compare intercity bus with SGR and flights
Dar es Salaam to Arusha About 627 km by sampled road routing Long intercity bus day; flight may be better for tight trips
Dar es Salaam to Mwanza About 1,152 km by sampled road routing Rail/flight/intercity bus comparison matters
Dar es Salaam to Bagamoyo About 67 km by sampled road routing Short coastal road trip
Dar es Salaam to Mikumi About 294 km by sampled road routing Safari-road planning; early departure helps

For a intercity bus day, carry the operator name, ticket, exact terminal, bay if available, passport/ID where required and small cash for short local movements. If the bus leaves early, sleep closer to Mbezi Luis or book a reliable pre-dawn ride.

Rail Nodes: TRC, SGR and TAZARA

Dar es Salaam has several rail contexts, and mixing them up creates bad travel plans.

Dar es Salaam central rail terminal is the central city rail anchor for classic Tanzania Railways / TRC context. Use Tanzania Railways for current passenger schedules, ticketing and station instructions.

SGR services are part of the modern Tanzania Railways corridor from Dar es Salaam toward Morogoro and Dodoma, with Pugu-side station planning relevant for some trips. When booking SGR, follow the ticket and TRC instructions for the exact station and reporting point. Do not assume the central classic station is always the right departure point for the new SGR service.

TAZARA Station, Dar es Salaam is the rail anchor for the Tanzania-Zambia Railway corridor. It is about 8.6 km by road from JNIA and about 8.4 km from the Kivukoni waterfront anchor in sampled routing. Use TAZARA for current cross-border and long-distance rail information before planning a Zambia-bound trip.

For rail days, plan three things separately: station access, ticket collection/digital ticket rules, and arrival-side transport. A train can solve the long-distance part and still leave you with a taxi problem at dawn or after dark.

Ferries, Port and Zanzibar Links

The visitor ferry most people mean is the Dar es Salaam-Zanzibar passenger ferry, with Azam Marine as the key operator name to check for schedules and ticketing. The ferry terminal area is near Kivukoni / central waterfront. JNIA to Azam Marine sampled at 12.8 km by road.

Arrive early for ferry departures. Security, ticketing, passport/ID checks, boarding queues and luggage all take time. If your flight lands the same morning, build a buffer or sleep in Dar and take the ferry the next day.

The Kivukoni-Kigamboni ferry is different. It is a local harbour crossing toward Kigamboni, useful for beach-side or south-harbour movement. It is not the Zanzibar ferry. If a driver hears “ferry”, clarify whether you mean Azam Marine/Zanzibar or Kivukoni-Kigamboni.

Dar es Salaam Port is a major cargo and maritime hub, especially around port/Kurasini logistics areas. For ordinary tourists, the port matters mainly because port traffic can affect road movement and because some business, crew, cargo or shipping addresses are port-side rather than city-centre addresses.

Taxis, Bolt, Bajaji and Private Cars

For direct rides, use Bolt, airport taxis, ordinary taxis, hotel cars or a known local driver. Keep the app fare and the driver’s final destination aligned before departure. If the address is a ferry terminal, bus terminal, port gate, ship, industrial yard or embassy, send the pin before the ride starts.

Uber is not a current Dar es Salaam ride-hailing plan. It exited Tanzania on January 30, 2026, so articles and older travel notes that still mention Uber as an active option need updating. If a traveller asks for “Uber”, the practical answer is to check Bolt, a hotel taxi, a local taxi rank or a pre-arranged driver.

For ordinary city movement, a taxi is worth paying for when you have luggage, children, a late arrival, a ferry deadline, a port/industrial address or a route across several districts. For short daylight hops without luggage, a bajaji can be cheaper and easier.

For airport and ferry days, do not chase the absolute lowest fare. Pay for reliability, a clear pickup point and a driver who understands the terminal. Missing a ferry or flight costs more than saving a few thousand shillings on the transfer.

Best Areas to Stay

Area Best for Transport logic
Kivukoni / Posta / Kisutu Zanzibar ferry, central offices, short city stay Best ferry access; airport ride still needs traffic margin
Kariakoo Budget stays, markets, central road links Practical and busy; use taxis at night with luggage
Upanga / Ilala Hospital/office/family visits, central access Good if the exact address is nearby
Masaki / Oyster Bay / Msasani Business, embassies, restaurants, coastal hotels Longer airport and bus-terminal transfers
Mikocheni / Mwenge side North-city errands, universities, mixed business stays Useful for local destination, less ideal for ferry mornings
Mbezi Beach Beach-side/northern stays Farther from JNIA, ferry and Magufuli Bus Terminal than it looks in casual planning
Mbezi Luis / Magufuli Terminal area Early long-distance intercity buses Best for intercity bus departures, poor for sightseeing/ferry unless planned
Airport / Nyerere Road side Late arrivals, early flights, transit nights Convenient for flights, not for exploring the peninsula
Kigamboni Beach and south-harbour stays Plan ferry/bridge logic and night returns carefully

For a one-night transit, stay near the next departure point. For a city visit, choose the area by the places you will actually visit. For mixed ferry, airport and business movement, Kivukoni/Kisutu/Posta gives the cleanest central base, while Masaki/Oyster Bay gives a more comfortable stay at the cost of longer transfers.

Onward Travel

Zanzibar is the signature onward link. Use the passenger ferry from the central waterfront or a flight from JNIA. The ferry is practical when the schedule fits and the sea conditions/timing are acceptable; flights are better when luggage, timing or onward connections matter.

Morogoro and Dodoma are the strongest SGR/road comparison routes. Check Tanzania Railways for SGR tickets and schedules, and compare against intercity bus timing from Mbezi Luis.

Arusha and Moshi are long intercity bus routes from Dar. If the trip is short, compare flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha-area options; if it is budget-focused, use reputable intercity bus operators and leave a full day.

Mwanza is a long-distance route where rail, intercity bus and flight comparisons matter. Do not choose by headline fare alone; include station/terminal transfer, arrival time, luggage and next-day fatigue.

Bagamoyo is a shorter coastal road trip north of Dar. Mikumi is a common road gateway for safari planning, but it is still a serious day on the road from Dar and should start early.

First-Time Checklist

  1. Confirm that the flight uses DAR / Julius Nyerere International Airport.
  2. Decide whether the first destination is Kariakoo, Kisutu/Kivukoni, Masaki/Oyster Bay, Mbezi Beach, Mbezi Luis or TAZARA.
  3. Use TZS planning bands, not old dollar benchmarks.
  4. Use Bolt or a booked taxi/hotel car for the first transfer if arriving late or with luggage.
  5. Treat DART as BRT and daladala as local bus transport; do not plan around citywide urban rail.
  6. Check whether the intercity bus leaves from Magufuli Bus Terminal / Mbezi Luis, not just “Ubungo”.
  7. For rail, separate TRC classic rail, SGR and TAZARA before choosing a station.
  8. For ferry trips, distinguish Azam Marine/Zanzibar from Kivukoni-Kigamboni.
  9. Carry small TZS notes for daladala, bajaji and short local fares.
  10. Leave extra time for rain, port traffic, morning intercity bus queues and ferry reporting time.

FAQ

What airport should I use for Dar es Salaam?

Use Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR/HTDA). It is the main air gateway for Dar es Salaam and the airport to plan around for most international and domestic arrivals.

How much is a taxi from Dar es Salaam airport to the city?

Use 35,000-70,000 TZS as a planning range from JNIA to Kariakoo, Kisutu or Kivukoni. Masaki, Oyster Bay and Mbezi Beach usually need higher ranges because they are farther and more traffic-sensitive.

Does Dar es Salaam have urban rail?

No. Dar es Salaam has no citywide urban rail system for ordinary visitor planning. Use DART/BRT, daladala, bajaji, taxis, Bolt and walking in selected areas.

Where is the main long-distance bus terminal in Dar es Salaam?

Use John Magufuli Bus Terminal / Mbezi Luis as the main intercity bus anchor. Ubungo is still a major place name, but it should not be treated automatically as the departure point for every intercity bus.

Is Uber available in Dar es Salaam?

No for current planning. Uber stopped operating in Tanzania on January 30, 2026. Use Bolt, airport taxis, hotel cars, ordinary taxis or a known local driver.

Which rail station should I use in Dar es Salaam?

It depends on the train. Check whether the trip uses the Dar es Salaam central rail terminal, an SGR station/pickup instruction from Tanzania Railways, or TAZARA Station for the Tanzania-Zambia Railway corridor.

Where do ferries to Zanzibar leave from?

Passenger ferries to Zanzibar leave from the central waterfront/Kivukoni-side ferry terminal area, with Azam Marine as the key operator name to check. Do not confuse it with the Kivukoni-Kigamboni local ferry.

Where should I stay for easy transport in Dar es Salaam?

Stay near Kivukoni/Posta/Kisutu for ferries and central access, near Mbezi Luis for early intercity buses, near the airport for flight transit, or in Masaki/Oyster Bay/Msasani for business and coastal comfort.
