Hanoi Transport Hub

Hanoi is a transport hub where the first mistake is treating every arrival as "the centre." Noi Bai International Airport is north of the city. Hanoi rail station is on Le Duan near the French Quarter and Hoan Kiem edge. My Dinh, Giap Bat and Nuoc Ngam serve different bus corridors. The operating metro network is useful but not yet a full airport-to-old-quarter solution. Taxis, Grab, Be and Xanh SM fill many real gaps.

The main airport is Noi Bai International Airport (HAN/VVNB). The main city rail anchor is Hanoi station at 120 Le Duan Street. The main urban rail tools are Hanoi Metro Line 2A Cat Linh – Ha Dong and Line 3 Nhon – Cau Giay / Hanoi station corridor as it opens in stages. The intercity bus system is split: My Dinh is useful for many north and northwest routes, Giap Bat for south/southeast routes, Nuoc Ngam for many long-distance southbound services, and smaller terminals or private pickups may apply by operator.

This guide explains HAN airport transfers, Bus 86 and other airport buses, Hanoi Metro, rail, bus terminals, taxis, ride apps, hotel areas and car rental.

These are planning figures, not receipts. Airport bus prices are published by the airport, metro fares come from Hanoi Metro tables, and taxi/app prices depend on terminal, toll road, weather, rush hour and ride category.

Arrival Strategy

If you land at Noi Bai and stay in Hoan Kiem, Old Quarter or French Quarter, compare Bus 86 with taxi/app. Bus 86 is the clean public option because it runs between the airport and Ha Noi rail station corridor. Taxi or app ride is easier after a long flight, late at night or with several bags.

If you stay in Tay Ho, Ba Dinh, Cau Giay or My Dinh, do not automatically go to the Old Quarter first. Bus 90, 109 or a direct app ride may fit better. If you stay in Ha Dong, the 68 corridor or Metro Line 2A logic may matter. If you stay near a bus terminal, choose the airport route that avoids crossing the entire city twice.

If your next trip is by rail, sleep near Hanoi station or the French Quarter/Hoan Kiem side. If the next trip is by intercity bus, sleep near the correct terminal: My Dinh, Giap Bat, Nuoc Ngam, Gia Lam or the private operator pickup. Hanoi traffic makes a wrong terminal painful.

Noi Bai International Airport

Noi Bai is Hanoi's main international and domestic airport. It sits north of the city, so road time is the big variable. The airport's transport page lists public bus routes with fares and hours, including Route 86 to Ha Noi rail station, Route 07 to Cau Giay, Route 90 to Kim Ma, Route 17 to Long Bien, Route 109 to My Dinh, Route 68 to Ha Dong and E10 to Ocean Park.

Use Bus 86 when your hotel is near Hoan Kiem, Old Quarter, the French Quarter or Hanoi station and you are comfortable with luggage on a city airport bus. Use route 109 for My Dinh logic, route 90 for Kim Ma/Ba Dinh side, route 07 for Cau Giay and route 68 for Ha Dong. Use taxi/app when the hotel is down an alley, the arrival is late or the final district is far from a bus stop.

For taxi and app rides, confirm whether the driver will use the toll road, whether tolls are included, where the pickup point is, and whether the hotel alley allows car access. Keep the hotel name and Vietnamese address ready. Some Old Quarter streets are narrow enough that the final 100 meters may be on foot.

Hanoi Metro

Hanoi Metro is useful but still corridor-based. Line 2A Cat Linh – Ha Dong helps west/southwest trips and can be valuable for Ha Dong, Cat Linh, Thai Ha, Lang, Van Quan and connected bus/taxi legs. Line 3 is opening in stages on the Nhon – Hanoi station corridor, with elevated operation and future central links. It should be treated as useful where it directly fits, not as a citywide replacement for taxi or bus.

Hanoi Metro's fare page lists line-specific fares and pass products under city decisions from 2025. For travelers, the practical point is simple: check the official fare table for the line, buy at the station or app according to current rules, and keep a small VND cash/card backup. Do not assume every line uses the same ticketing method at every moment while the network is still maturing.

Metro is not currently a direct Noi Bai Airport solution. Airport trips usually need bus/taxi/app first, then metro only if the hotel or station sits on the right corridor. For a subway-map user, the correct app behavior is to show Hanoi Metro lines clearly while warning that the airport and many bus terminals need road links.

Hanoi Rail

Hanoi station at 120 Le Duan Street is the main rail anchor for many Vietnam Railways services. It is useful for trains toward Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, Lao Cai/Sapa connections by route, and other intercity rail travel. It is close enough to Hoan Kiem and the French Quarter to be practical, but not inside the Old Quarter maze.

Use Hanoi station when the trip is rail-led. For a morning southbound train, sleep near Le Duan, French Quarter or Hoan Kiem. For a late arrival, use taxi/app to the hotel rather than trying to solve a city bus with luggage. For Sapa/Lao Cai travel, check whether the operator uses Hanoi station, a private pickup or another departure point.

Rail and airport are not the same side of town. Bus 86 links Noi Bai with Hanoi station, but allow time for traffic and station navigation. If the flight lands close to a train departure, use taxi/app and still leave a large buffer.

Bus Terminals And Private Buses

Hanoi's intercity bus system is fragmented by direction. My Dinh serves many north, northwest and some intercity routes; the Hanoi terminal company page lists My Dinh as a member terminal. Giap Bat sits on the Giai Phong corridor and is important for many south/southeast routes. Nuoc Ngam is another major south-side terminal. Gia Lam is useful for some northeast/east routes. Private limousine vans and sleeper buses may use offices, hotel pickups or highway points.

Do not book a "Hanoi bus" without the exact boarding point. A Sapa vehicle, Ninh Binh limousine, Ha Long transfer, Ha Giang sleeper or airport shuttle may leave from a private office rather than a formal terminal. Ask for the Vietnamese address, district, pickup window and phone number.

If you arrive at Noi Bai and depart by intercity bus the same day, choose the bus pickup based on airport-side practicality. My Dinh may be easier from the airport than Giap Bat or Nuoc Ngam. For Old Quarter pickups, traffic and narrow streets can add stress.

For onward tourism, match the terminal to the route rather than the city name. Ha Long transfers often use private vans, hotel pickups or offices instead of a formal terminal. Sapa and Ha Giang sleeper buses may use private pickup points around the Old Quarter, My Dinh or operator offices. Ninh Binh can be reached by rail, limousine van or intercity bus, and the best choice depends on hotel pickup and luggage. If a tour operator promises pickup, still keep the exact address and phone number because Hanoi's lanes and duplicate hotel names can confuse drivers.

Taxis, Grab, Be And Xanh SM

Taxis and ride apps are essential in Hanoi because hotels, alleys, terminals and metro stations rarely line up perfectly. Grab is widely used, Be is a local app option, and Xanh SM operates electric taxi/car services. Traditional taxis also work, but airport and tourist-area rides require basic caution: use official ranks, reliable companies, app booking or hotel-arranged cars.

For HAN to Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem, plan around VND 300,000-450,000 before surge, tolls and late-night changes. Tay Ho can be a little closer depending on address. Ha Dong, My Dinh and southern terminals can vary widely by ring-road traffic. Apps help because they show a quote before you commit.

Motorbike taxis can be fast for solo travelers without luggage, but they are not a good airport solution with bags. For family groups, late arrivals, rain or long-distance transfers, use a car.

Where To Stay

Old Quarter / Hoan Kiem is best for first-time sightseeing, food, nightlife and Bus 86 access. It is less convenient for large cars and early intercity bus departures from far terminals.

French Quarter / Hanoi station area is best for rail departures, Hoan Kiem access and a calmer first night than deep Old Quarter alleys.

Tay Ho is best for longer stays, cafes, expat services and easier airport-side road access, but not for every sightseeing day.

Ba Dinh / Kim Ma is useful for government, embassies, museums and airport bus 90-style logic.

Cau Giay / My Dinh is useful for business, stadium events, west-side offices and north/northwest bus departures.

Ha Dong is useful for Line 2A and southwest-side trips, not for first-time Old Quarter sightseeing.

Airport hotels are best for early flights, late arrivals or one-night layovers.

Car Rental And Driving

Do not self-drive in Hanoi for normal tourism. Traffic, motorbikes, parking, local rules and narrow streets make self-driving a poor fit for most visitors.

Use a car with driver for Ninh Binh, Ha Long, Mai Chau, Tam Dao, business parks, family luggage or multi-stop rural trips. If renting or booking a driver, confirm tolls, parking, waiting time, child seats, luggage capacity, pickup lane and whether the vehicle can enter the hotel street.

Practical Arrival Plans

If you land at HAN and stay in Hoan Kiem, compare Bus 86 with Grab/Be/Xanh SM.

If you land at HAN and stay in My Dinh, check route 109 or taxi/app before routing through Old Quarter.

If you arrive by rail at Hanoi station, use taxi/app for Old Quarter alleys unless luggage is light.

If your intercity bus leaves from Giap Bat or Nuoc Ngam, sleep south-side or leave early from central Hanoi.

If you use Line 2A or Line 3, plan the final taxi/bus leg before buying the hotel.

If you travel to Ha Long, Sapa, Ninh Binh or Ha Giang, check whether the operator uses a terminal, office pickup or hotel pickup.

Common Mistakes

The first mistake is assuming Noi Bai has metro service into the Old Quarter. It does not.

The second mistake is booking the wrong bus terminal. My Dinh, Giap Bat, Nuoc Ngam and private pickups are not interchangeable.

The third mistake is staying deep in an Old Quarter alley before an early airport or intercity bus departure.

The fourth mistake is assuming Hanoi Metro covers all sightseeing. It is useful by corridor, not citywide.

The fifth mistake is accepting a taxi without confirming meter, app price, tolls or hotel address.
