Qom Transport Hub

Qom Transport Hub is a city-researched guide for arriving in Iran’s main pilgrimage city and choosing between Imam Khomeini International Airport, Mehrabad Airport, Qom rail services, Mohammadieh rail services, the central road terminal, Tehran-Qom buses, Snapp, TAPSI, shrine-area taxis, Jamkaran routes and longer onward travel to Tehran, Mashhad, Isfahan, Kashan and Arak. Qom is close enough to Tehran to look simple on a map, but it behaves like a regional transfer city: airport choice, hotel district and shrine timing change the best route.

The most important rule is to separate international airport arrival, domestic flight arrival, rail arrival and pilgrimage-area movement. IKA is the main international airport for Qom. Mehrabad is the Tehran domestic airport. Qom has rail links, but travellers must check whether the ticket uses Qom city rail hub or Mohammadieh. Road travel is frequent, especially from Tehran, but terminal choice and late-night arrival matter.

Arrival Strategy

IKA for international arrivals

Imam Khomeini International Airport is the default for international visitors. It is outside Tehran and sits on the correct side of the capital for Qom, so a direct IKA-Qom car can be more logical than first entering Tehran. Rome2Rio lists IKA to Qom options by bus, train, car or taxi, and the practical transfer is often a direct car, Snapp/TAPSI where workable, official airport taxi or a pre-arranged driver.

IKAC’s official airport taxi page says the airport taxi service operates 24/7 with dedicated airport vehicles. That is useful for late arrivals, families and pilgrims who want a clear airport pickup. The trade-off is price. App-based rides can be cheaper when registration, local SIM and pickup location work. A pre-arranged driver can be worth it if you land late, carry religious-group luggage or need to go directly to a shrine-area hotel.

Mehrabad for domestic flights

Mehrabad is the domestic-flight airport for Tehran. Kupi’s Mehrabad guide gives the official site as mehrabad.airport.ir, information number +98 21 61021 from abroad, short code 199 inside Iran, and airport address around Mehrabad International Airport, Tehran, Meraj St. If you fly from Mashhad, Shiraz, Isfahan, Ahvaz or another Iranian city to Tehran, you will probably use THR rather than IKA.

From Mehrabad to Qom, the simplest plans are private car/app taxi, taxi to Tehran South Terminal for a bus, or taxi/metro into Tehran for rail. This is a cross-Tehran transfer, so do not schedule it too tightly. Tehran traffic can turn a simple connection into a long one.

Kashan and other airports

Kashan Airport appears in airport datasets, but it is not the normal flight gateway for Qom visitors. Use it only when the ticket actually says KKS and a local pickup is arranged. For most travellers, the realistic airport choices are IKA for international and THR for domestic.

Airport Transfers

IKA to Qom by direct car

A direct car is the most comfortable IKA-Qom transfer. It avoids Tehran terminals and is especially useful if the hotel is near the Fatima Masumeh Shrine, the traveller is arriving late, or the group includes elderly pilgrims. OrientTrips offers an IKA-to-Qom airport taxi product and describes airport pickup with a driver holding a name sign. City-Airport-Taxis also lists 24/7 IKA transfer services. Use these as private-transfer benchmarks, then compare with Snapp/TAPSI and hotel quotes.

If using an app ride, save the hotel name in Persian and ask whether the driver is willing to make the intercity trip before loading bags. If using an airport taxi, confirm the total amount, currency and destination district before leaving the terminal.

IKA to Qom by public route

The cheaper route usually means bus/metro/rail via Tehran or a terminal transfer. It can work during the day, but it is less comfortable with luggage and after a long flight. If the first night is in the shrine area, a direct car often saves enough stress to justify the higher fare.

THR to Qom

From Mehrabad, most public routes first enter Tehran’s terminal or rail system. For buses, Tehran’s South Terminal is commonly referenced for Tehran-Qom services in traveller advice, while Tehran West/Azadi is more relevant for other directions. If the domestic flight lands late, a direct car from THR to Qom can be cleaner than crossing Tehran and searching for a late bus.

Rail: Qom and Mohammadieh

Qom’s rail picture needs care. OrientTrips places Qom’s city rail hub at Shahid Beheshti Boulevard, Railway Square, and lists station phone +98 25 3162 2230 plus the passenger hotline +98 21 5149. Mapy says Qom railway serves the city and notes that some services were moved to Mohammadieh, with some restored to the city station. That is the key traveller warning: do not assume every “Qom” train leaves from the same place.

Use Qom city rail hub when the ticket clearly shows the city station and the hotel is near the shrine, bazaar or central districts. Use Mohammadieh only when the ticket says so, and budget a taxi or hotel pickup. The Tehran-Qom rail distance is about 125 km in rail route references, and rail can be a good choice for Tehran, Mashhad and longer Iran routes when tickets are available.

For foreign visitors, train ticketing can be less straightforward than domestic Iranian booking. If online payment is difficult, ask the hotel or a local agency. Bring passport details exactly as used for the ticket.

For Mashhad, rail is often the most comfortable long-distance option because it avoids changing vehicles in Tehran and keeps luggage with the passenger. For Isfahan, compare rail, bus and private car depending on the day and whether the route continues to Kashan. For Tehran, the bus can be very frequent, while rail can be more comfortable if the station and ticket time fit the hotel plan. For Arak and western Iran, ask locally whether the best route is bus, rail or a shared taxi from a specific terminal.

Road Terminals and Intercity Buses

Qom’s central road terminal is important because the city sits on Tehran-Isfahan and Tehran-south corridors. ToIran lists Qom Central Bus Terminal at Old Qom-Tehran Rd. Mapy also maps Qom Bus Terminal in central Iran. Tehran-Qom road services are frequent; Dalahoo described buses from Tehran to Qom between 06:15 and 21:30, with older fare bands of 115,000-140,000 IRR for ordinary buses and 170,000 IRR for VIP service. Those prices are old, but the frequency pattern is useful.

From Tehran, ask which terminal your bus uses. South Terminal is often the practical reference for Tehran-Qom in traveller discussions. From Qom, buses continue or connect toward Kashan, Isfahan, Arak, Saveh, Tehran and pilgrimage routes. For Mashhad, rail may be more comfortable if tickets are available, while buses remain a fallback.

When arriving at Qom terminal, decide whether the final destination is the shrine area, Jamkaran, a seminary district, a hotel near the rail hub or a highway-side stop. Taxis around terminals can quote higher fares to foreigners; Snapp/TAPSI or a hotel call can help.

City Buses, Shrine Area and Jamkaran

Qom’s local transport is shaped by pilgrimage. The Fatima Masumeh Shrine and the surrounding bazaar/hotel zone are the main pedestrian core. Jamkaran Mosque is outside the centre and needs a planned ride, bus route or taxi. During religious nights, holidays and peak pilgrimage periods, the road network around the shrine can be congested, and vehicle access near the hotel may change.

Qom municipality reported approval of an increase in city bus fare from 2,700 tomans to 3,700 tomans. Wikivoyage’s older Qom guidance mentions cheap local buses and a broad bus/taxi network, but the municipality figure is the better recent fare anchor. Use buses for simple daylight movement when a route is clear; use taxis/apps for luggage, late arrivals, Jamkaran and family travel.

For shrine-area hotels, ask the hotel where taxis can actually stop. Some lanes near the shrine are pedestrian-heavy or restricted. A driver may drop you at the nearest accessible street rather than the hotel door.

For group travel, agree on one meeting point before entering the shrine area. Phones can lose signal in crowds, and several gates or squares may sound similar in English. If the group includes older travellers, choose a hotel close enough to walk back from the shrine without needing a taxi every time. That can save more energy than choosing a cheaper room farther out.

Religious calendar timing matters. On busy nights, around major commemorations and during holiday periods, normal road access can change. A car that can reach the hotel at noon may only be able to reach a nearby square in the evening. Build that into airport transfers and late-night arrivals; it is better to know the final walking segment before the driver reaches the restricted area.

Taxis, Snapp and TAPSI

Snapp and TAPSI are the main app-taxi tools. Snapp’s official page describes a super-app for vehicle requests, food, supermarket shopping, travel tickets and hotel booking. TAPSI’s official page advertises app-based rides and phone booking via 1630, useful if internet or app registration fails. IranRoute describes Snapp and TAP30/TAPSI as among Iran’s most popular online taxi services and notes that they can be efficient and budget-friendly.

For local Qom rides, app pricing helps avoid negotiation around the shrine, terminals and railway. For IKA-Qom and THR-Qom, app rides can work, but the driver must accept a longer intercity journey. For non-app taxis, agree the fare first.

Qomna reported 1404 taxi-fare discussion with the city taxi base moving from 75,000 rials to 100,000 rials. Numbeo’s Qom taxi page gives broad cost-of-living benchmarks, but local rial/toman reporting and app quotes are more useful for real rides.

Cash remains useful. Even when Snapp or TAPSI works, a small cash reserve helps with terminal taxis, shrine-area short rides, porter-style help and small purchases. Keep local currency in smaller notes because drivers may not want to break large bills late at night. If a hotel calls a taxi, ask whether the price is fixed by the hotel or negotiated with the driver.

Route Choices Beyond Qom

For Tehran, choose by destination: IKA for flights, Mehrabad for domestic flights, South Terminal for many bus patterns, and Tehran rail if the onward route is train-based. For Kashan, a private car can be convenient for a combined pilgrimage and sightseeing itinerary, while bus or rail may be better for one-way budget travel. For Isfahan, buses are frequent in Iran, but rail or private car can be more comfortable depending the group.

For Mashhad, book early during pilgrimage seasons because both Qom and Mashhad have strong religious travel demand. For Iraq-bound pilgrimage routes or Mehran-side movement, do not improvise from the shrine area; use current local advice, terminal counters or an organized operator because seasonal border traffic can change normal travel times.

Where to Stay by Transport Need

Shrine / Fatima Masumeh area

This is the best base for pilgrims, first-time visitors and short stays. It keeps the shrine, bazaar, food, religious sites and many hotels close. Transfers may need careful drop-off because of crowds and restricted streets.

Rail hub side

Use the rail-side area if an early train is the main reason for the night. It can be practical for Tehran/Mashhad rail but less atmospheric than the shrine district.

Qom terminal / highway side

Stay near the road terminal only when the trip is bus-heavy or the first departure is very early. It is less attractive for shrine visits unless the price or timing is compelling.

Jamkaran side

Choose Jamkaran only when the visit is centred on Jamkaran Mosque. For general Qom, it is better as a planned taxi trip than a default hotel area.

Price and Fare Planning

Trip or fare item Planning benchmark Notes
IKA to Qom car intercity airport transfer, price varies by official taxi/app/private driver Quote before departure; confirm currency and destination
Tehran-Qom bus frequent service; older Dalahoo reference listed ordinary and VIP fare bands Use current terminal counter or booking platform price
Qom city bus 3,700 tomans after reported municipal fare rise Confirm current fare and payment method locally
Qom taxi base 100,000 rials discussed for 1404 base in Qomna report App quote or meter/negotiation controls actual trip
Qom rail hotline +98 25 3162 2230 / +98 21 5149 in OrientTrips station guide Useful for rail-station questions
Shrine to Jamkaran taxi/app ride or confirmed bus route Plan around prayer nights and crowds

First-Time Checklist

  1. Use IKA for international flights and THR for domestic Tehran flights.
  2. Confirm whether your train uses Qom city rail hub or Mohammadieh.
  3. Save the hotel name and shrine-area street in Persian.
  4. Install Snapp and TAPSI before arrival, but keep hotel taxi help as backup.
  5. If arriving late at IKA, consider a pre-booked car straight to Qom.
  6. For Jamkaran, plan the return ride before leaving the central hotel.
  7. During pilgrimage peaks, add time for shrine-area traffic and drop-off restrictions.

Qom Transport Hub FAQ

What airport should I use for Qom?

Use Imam Khomeini International Airport for international flights and Mehrabad for domestic flights through Tehran. A direct IKA-Qom car is often the simplest arrival.

Is train or bus better from Tehran to Qom?

Both can work. Rail is comfortable when tickets and station choice are clear. Bus is frequent and useful from Tehran terminals, especially for budget travel.

Does Qom have more than one rail stop to check?

Yes. Check whether the ticket uses Qom city rail hub or Mohammadieh. This matters for taxi time and hotel pickup.

Do Snapp and TAPSI work for Qom?

They are the first app options to try for local rides and some intercity transfers. For airport arrivals, confirm that the driver accepts the long ride before loading luggage.

Where should I stay in Qom for easy transport?

For most visitors, the Fatima Masumeh Shrine area is best. Use the rail side for early trains, terminal side for early buses, and Jamkaran side only for Jamkaran-focused trips.
