Rijeka Transport Hub
Rijeka is a coastal gateway where airport, rail, intercity buses, local Autotrolej buses, port travel and island transfers all matter. The city centre is compact around Korzo, Žabica, the port and the rail station, but the airport is not in the city: Rijeka Airport, RJK, sits on Krk island near Omišalj. That geography shapes the first transfer. The official airport shuttle is timed to flights and priced separately from city buses, while taxis, rental cars and private transfers are often used for late arrivals, island hotels, Opatija, Crikvenica, Novi Vinodolski and Krk towns.
The most useful arrival chain depends on the ticket you hold. If you fly into RJK and are going to central Rijeka, check the airport shuttle first: Rijeka Airport lists the Rijeka route at €15 one way from 1 May 2025 and warns that unofficial bus sellers are not allowed to transfer to the terminal building. If you arrive by intercity bus, you will usually use the Žabica area in the city centre. If you arrive by train, HŽPP lists Rijeka station at Trg kralja Tomislava 1. For city movement, Autotrolej operates the local and suburban bus network with zone-based fares and newer RCC Mobility digital tickets.

Arrival Strategy
If You Fly Into Rijeka Airport RJK
RJK is convenient for Kvarner, Krk and the northern Adriatic, but it is not a downtown airport. Enterprise describes Rijeka Airport as 26 km southeast of the city centre on the northern shores of Krk island, with the drive using road 102 and then A7 or the coastal E65 route. The bridge and coastal roads can be fast in calm traffic and slower during summer peaks, so keep buffer time for flight departures.
The airport-operated shuttle is the first public option to check. Rijeka Airport’s bus page says shuttle transfers are operated by Rijeka Airport according to monthly published timetables and lists the Rijeka one-way price at €15. The same page warns that other unofficial bus carriers selling airport tickets are not allowed to transfer passengers to the terminal building, only to a crossroads about 2 km away. For a traveler, that warning is not cosmetic: if a ticket does not come from the official airport shuttle context, check exactly where the vehicle will drop you.
If You Arrive By Train
HŽPP lists Rijeka station at Trg kralja Tomislava 1, Rijeka. That is the rail point for Zagreb, Ljubljana/Slovenia-linked planning, seasonal and international services where available, and Croatian domestic rail routes. HŽPP also lists luggage lockers at Rijeka with small and medium lockers at €2 and large lockers at €3, useful for a short city stop before a bus, ferry or cruise.
Rail can be scenic and useful, but Rijeka is not always faster by train than by road. For Zagreb and many Croatian routes, compare HŽPP schedules against Arriva/Flix/other intercity buses by actual departure and arrival time. If the destination is the islands, Opatija or the coast, a bus, ferry or car may work better than a rail-first itinerary.
If You Arrive By Intercity Bus
Rijeka’s central intercity bus point is the Žabica area. Arriva Croatia is a major operator for Rijeka and Croatia-wide routes, and the city-centre location puts passengers close to Korzo, the port, the rail station and local bus stops. Some listings use Žabica 1 or Žabica 2; the practical rule is to follow the operator ticket, platform display and local signs rather than a generic map pin.
For domestic Croatia, buses often beat rail on coastal and regional reach. Rijeka has strong links toward Zagreb, Opatija, Pula/Istria, Crikvenica, Krk island, Zadar/Split through connections and Slovenian/Italian-border planning through regional operators. For summer travel, book earlier and arrive before departure because luggage loading can be slower.
Rijeka Airport RJK
Airport Shuttle To Rijeka
Rijeka Airport’s own bus page is the core source. It states that shuttle transfers are operated by the airport according to monthly published timetables and lists prices from 1 May 2025, including Rijeka Airport-Rijeka at €15 one way, Kraljevica at €6, Omišalj at €4, Crikvenica at €15 and Novi Vinodolski at €20. The airport note about unofficial bus carriers is important enough to repeat: unofficial sellers may not reach the terminal building.
Use the shuttle when your flight and central Rijeka timing match. Use a taxi, private transfer or rental car when the flight is late, the hotel is outside central Rijeka, the destination is Opatija, Krk, Crikvenica, Novi Vinodolski or an island connection, or when you are carrying awkward luggage.
Taxi At RJK
Rijeka Airport’s taxi page says taxi activity without valid airport parking permission is forbidden. It also says a list of legal taxis is displayed at the airport exit and available through the airport site, and asks visitors to avoid taxi vehicles not on the list. That is the strongest traveler rule: do not accept informal airport offers and do not assume every car waiting near the terminal is authorized.
For price sense, the airport’s legal-taxi rule is more authoritative than a random fare blog. A private airport taxi site lists approximate fixed prices such as RJK to Omišalj €20, Njivice €30, Malinska €40, Rijeka €55, Krk €55, Opatija €80 and Baška €85. Treat those as planning benchmarks only; always confirm the quote, vehicle size, night supplement, luggage and child-seat needs before departure.
Car Rental And Driving From RJK
Car rental is one of the strongest uses of Rijeka Airport. Sixt says its counter is in the arrivals hall across from the information center, while Enterprise describes the airport’s road access to the city. Renting makes sense for Krk island, Cres/Lošinj via ferry, Opatija Riviera, Istria, Plitvice plans, hill towns, beaches with poor transit timing and multi-stop coast travel.
For a city-only Rijeka stay, a car can be unnecessary. Central Rijeka is walkable, parking is constrained, and Autotrolej covers many local corridors. Rent for range, not for Korzo.
Autotrolej And City Movement
Fares And Ticket Types
Autotrolej’s fare structure is zone-based. Its individual-ticket page lists single-use tickets bought from the driver at €2.50 for one zone, €3.00 for two zones, €3.50 for three zones and €4.00 for four zones. Dual-use tickets sold through points of sale are €2.80 for one zone, €3.70 for two, €4.60 for three and €5.20 for four. Day tickets are €3.19 for zone 1 and €5.44 for zones 1-4, while weekly tickets are €12.74 for zone 1 and €25.48 for zones 1-4.
Autotrolej also has newer digital tickets through RCC Mobility. The digital-ticket page lists a 30-minute zone 1 ticket at €1.30, a 60-minute zones 1-4 ticket at €2.10, a 24-hour pass at €4.40, a weekday pass at €19.80, a weekend pass at €7.90 and a 7-day pass at €25.00. Digital tickets must be activated before or upon boarding and shown to the driver or ticket control staff.
Where Local Buses Help Most
For visitors, Autotrolej is most useful for Trsat, Kantrida, beaches, neighborhoods above the centre, suburban hotels, Opatija Riviera connections through the local/regional network and short hops when hills or weather make walking unpleasant. Korzo and the old centre are walkable; the climbs behind the city are not always fun with luggage.
The most important practical difference is paper versus digital. A driver ticket is simple but more expensive for a short zone 1 ride. RCC Mobility can be cheaper and more flexible, but it requires phone setup, payment and activation discipline. For one or two rides, buy simply. For multiple rides in one day, compare the day ticket or digital pass.
Rail From Rijeka
HŽPP Rijeka Station
HŽPP’s railway-stations page lists Rijeka at Trg kralja Tomislava 1 and gives ticket-office hours. Its luggage page lists lockers at the same address. The station is west of the old core and close enough to walk to the centre or port in good weather, but a taxi can be sensible with bags or cruise luggage.
Rail is useful for Zagreb and inland Croatia when the timetable works, and for rail enthusiasts who value the route as much as the speed. It is less useful for island trips, Opatija and many coastal moves. HŽPP’s site should be checked for current timetables, disruptions, ticket-office hours and contactless onboard payment options.
Station-To-City Logic
From Rijeka station, Korzo, the port and Žabica are close but not identical. If your onward departure is from Žabica, allow walking time and check platform location. If connecting to a ferry or catamaran, check Jadrolinija departure point and ticketing first. If staying uphill or in Trsat, call a taxi or use Autotrolej instead of dragging luggage up the slopes.
Intercity Buses At Žabica
Žabica And Arriva Croatia
Arriva Croatia is one of the main operators to check for Rijeka routes. It advertises daily Rijeka-Zagreb departures and provides customer contact details. The Žabica area functions as Rijeka’s central intercity departure zone, with operator windows, platforms and city-centre access. Because online listings vary between Žabica 1, Žabica 2 and nearby pins, always follow the exact ticket and station signage.
For many Croatian itineraries, buses are the practical answer from Rijeka. Zagreb is frequent, Istria routes are road-led, island and coastal towns are often bus-plus-ferry or bus-plus-taxi, and airport connections depend on the airport shuttle schedule. In summer, book early for Fridays, Sundays and holiday weekends.
Connecting Žabica With Rail, Port And Korzo
Žabica is close to Korzo and the port, and not far from the rail station. With light luggage, you can often walk between these anchors. With cruise bags, ferry luggage, rain or summer heat, a short taxi may be worthwhile. Keep the exact departure platform in mind: a “Rijeka” intercity bus ticket is not enough detail when several services leave around the same central zone.
Port, Ferries And Coastal Travel
Jadrolinija And Rijeka Port
Jadrolinija is the official Croatian ferry operator to check for schedules and online tickets. Its search page lists Rijeka among departure ports and notes that schedules can change. The same official site lists Jadrolinija’s address as Riva 16, HR-51000 Rijeka and provides the 072 30 33 37 contact line. The Port of Rijeka Authority site also identifies passenger-port terminal context.
Rijeka port is very central, but ferry relevance changes by route and season. For Cres, Lošinj, Rab, Krk and other island travel, the best route may involve Rijeka city, Valbiska, Brestova, Porozina, Merag or another port rather than a direct Rijeka sailing. Check Jadrolinija first, then decide whether to reach the ship by walking, Autotrolej, taxi or rental car.
Cruise And Ferry Luggage
Rijeka is easier than many ports because the centre, port, rail station and Žabica are close. The catch is luggage. If you have wheeled bags and a flat central route, walking may be fine. If the hotel is uphill, the weather is wet, or the sailing leaves from a less obvious berth, use a taxi or ask the hotel/ship operator for the exact pier.
Taxis, Apps And Private Transfers
In Central Rijeka
Taxis are most useful for late arrivals, hills, cruise luggage, Trsat, Kantrida, Opatija, suburban hotels and early airport departures. Confirm meter or fixed fare before departure. If using a private transfer, confirm pickup point, waiting time, night supplement, luggage and whether the quote includes the Krk bridge/road route.
Ride-app availability can change by season and demand, so do not build an urgent airport plan around an app without checking live availability. Traditional taxi and private transfer are still important in Rijeka because of airport geography and island/coast travel patterns.
Airport And Regional Fare Planning
For RJK to central Rijeka, use three price anchors: airport shuttle €15 one way when scheduled; fixed/private airport taxi benchmarks around €55 to Rijeka from one local airport-transfer provider; and a quoted private transfer for groups or late arrivals. For Opatija, Crikvenica, Krk towns, Baška and Valbiska, do not extrapolate from a short city taxi fare. Get a destination-specific quote.
Where To Stay For Transport
Korzo / Old Centre
Best for walking, restaurants, sights, port access and a short move to Žabica. It is the easiest base for a first Rijeka stay.
Žabica / Rijeka Rail Side
Best for intercity bus and rail connections, early departures, budget stays and fast onward travel. Check noise and luggage route before booking.
Trsat / Hillside
Best for views and local atmosphere, but less ideal with bags. Plan Autotrolej, taxi or a careful walking route.
Opatija / Riviera
Best for resort stays rather than Rijeka-city logistics. Airport transfers, buses and taxis need to be planned separately from central Rijeka.
Krk / Airport Side
Best for island holidays, beaches and early RJK flights. Not the right base for a city break unless the airport or island itinerary dominates.
First-Time Checklist
- For RJK arrivals, check the official airport shuttle timetable and €15 Rijeka fare first.
- Avoid unofficial airport bus tickets that do not reach the terminal building.
- Use only legal airport taxis listed or authorized at RJK.
- Use HŽPP Rijeka at Trg kralja Tomislava 1 for rail planning.
- Use Žabica for intercity buses, but follow the exact operator ticket and platform.
- Compare Autotrolej driver ticket, paper day ticket and RCC Mobility digital fare before city rides.
- Check Jadrolinija for ferry schedules before assuming a direct Rijeka island sailing.
- Rent a car for Krk, Istria, islands and countryside, not for a simple Korzo stay.
