Sandefjord Transport Hub

Sandefjord Transport Hub

Sandefjord is a small Norwegian coastal city with a transport role that is bigger than its size. The city has Torp Airport just north of town, a rail stop on the Vestfold Line, local VKT buses, direct airport buses toward Oslo, taxis with Norwegian advance-price rules, Uber taxi requests, and the Color Line ferry to Stromstad in Sweden. For a traveler, the important point is that these systems do not all meet in one building. The airport terminal, Torp rail stop, Sandefjord station, Fokserod road interchange and ferry terminal each solve a different job.

This guide is written for practical route planning. It names the places that matter, explains how Torp airport connects with Sandefjord and Oslo, gives current fare cues in Norwegian kroner, and separates the easy transfers from the ones that need timing care.

Arrival Strategy

The first Sandefjord decision is whether you are really going to Sandefjord or using Torp as an Oslo-area low-cost airport. Torp is close to Sandefjord, but it is far from central Oslo. Vy describes Torp as about 119 km south of Oslo, with a train and shuttle trip to Oslo taking around 1 hour 45 minutes. Torp-Ekspressen says its airport bus reaches central Oslo in about 1 hour 35 minutes, and it times departures around Ryanair and Wizz Air arrivals.

If your hotel is in Sandefjord, the airport transfer is short. A taxi or Uber taxi is the simplest door-to-door option. The rail option is also useful, but it has one extra step: a shuttle bus from the airport terminal to Torp rail stop, then a train one stop south to Sandefjord. If the shuttle and train line up, this is efficient. If you have heavy luggage, a late arrival, children or a hotel outside the center, the car option is easier.

If your destination is Oslo, compare the direct airport bus against the train. The direct bus leaves from the airport and avoids the Torp rail shuttle. The train can be comfortable and frequent, but you must include the shuttle segment and buy the right ticket combination. During the 2026 summer maintenance window, Torp’s own train page warns of rail replacement buses between Asker and Skien from July 4 through July 19, so travelers should allow more time or use the express bus during that period.

Sandefjord Airport Torp (TRF/ENTO)

Sandefjord Airport Torp is the city’s airport and the main air gateway for much of Vestfold. The airport site gives the terminal address as Torpveien 130, N-3241 Sandefjord, with phone 33 42 70 00 and email post@torp.no. It is close to Sandefjord center but also marketed heavily as an Oslo-region airport, so travelers must read the final destination carefully.

Torp’s own to-and-from page says passengers can reach the airport by car, bus, taxi or train, and that passengers arriving by train use a shuttle bus to reach the terminal building. This matters because the rail platforms are not inside the terminal. The terminal is also closed at night, so it is not a place to sleep between services.

Airport To Sandefjord Center

For central Sandefjord, there are three realistic routes:

Option Best for Details
Taxi or Uber taxi Late arrivals, luggage, hotels away from the center Torp taxi page says taxis are outside the terminal; ride time to Sandefjord is about 10 minutes
Airport shuttle plus train Light luggage, daytime travel, rail-based onward trip Airport shuttle to Torp rail stop takes about 4 minutes; train continues to Sandefjord
Fokserod shuttle plus VKT route 01 Budget travelers who understand the connection Shuttle runs airport-Fokserod, then VKT route 01 can reach Sandefjord center

The taxi choice is simple but price-sensitive. Torp explains that there is free taxi choice in Norway and that prices may vary. Drivers must tell passengers the price before the trip starts. Hvalen Taxi advertises a Sandefjord center to Torp fixed price of NOK 299, while Rome2Rio’s airport-to-Sandefjord estimate gives a wider NOK 300-360 taxi cue for the short trip. Use those numbers as a sense-check, then ask for the advance price before the ride starts.

Airport To Torp Rail Stop

The airport rail connection is a shuttle bus, not a walking route. Torp’s train page says the shuttle between the terminal and Torp rail stop takes about 4 minutes, and lists the shuttle ticket price as NOK 55. Vy’s Torp-Oslo page also warns that the road between the airport and the rail stop is not suitable for walking because there is no pavement.

For Sandefjord itself, the rail trip from Torp rail stop to Sandefjord is short. For Oslo, Vy says the train route from Torp to Oslo city center uses train R11 plus shuttle bus S174, and takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. Vy also notes that the shuttle is not included automatically in every train ticket, so the booking step matters.

Airport To Oslo

Torp-Ekspressen is the direct bus from Torp to Oslo Bussterminal. The operator says the travel time from Torp to central Oslo is 1:35 hours, and that the bus departs 45 minutes after actual Ryanair and Wizz Air arrivals. The Torp airport bus page also says Torp-Ekspressen gives a direct trip to Oslo in about 1.5 hours.

Torp-Ekspressen’s ticket page lists examples such as a student online return-trip ticket from NOK 214 and adult online return-trip ticket from NOK 279, with the cheapest tickets sold on its website. Prices can vary by date, ticket type and booking channel, but this gives the right planning scale.

Sandefjord Station And Rail Travel

The main city rail stop is Sandefjord station at Jernbaneplassen, 3210 Sandefjord. Bane NOR lists that address and notes the station building dates from 1881. Visit Vestfold describes the Vestfold Line as the rail route serving Sande, Holmestrand, Skoppum, Tonsberg, Stokke, Sandefjord and Larvik, with tickets through Vy, the Vy app, station machines or Narvesen.

For visitors, Sandefjord station is the easiest base for Oslo, Torp, Tonsberg, Larvik, Porsgrunn and Skien rail travel. It is also useful for ferry passengers, because Color Line says the train and bus stop area is within walking distance of the Sandefjord ferry terminal.

Rail Route Logic

Use rail this way:

Route Best use
Sandefjord to Oslo S Comfortable city-to-city trip without driving
Sandefjord to Torp rail stop Useful for the airport when the shuttle is operating
Sandefjord to Larvik / Skien / Porsgrunn Natural southbound Vestfold Line movement
Sandefjord to Tonsberg / Drammen Natural northbound regional movement
Sandefjord to Oslo Airport Gardermoen Possible by rail connection, but compare total time with flying from TRF

If you are catching a flight, add buffer. The Torp rail shuttle does not run every minute, the terminal is separate from the rail stop, and rail works can add replacement-bus segments. For the 2026 summer works mentioned by Torp, plan extra time or use the direct airport bus when going to Oslo.

Local VKT Buses

VKT is the local bus operator for Vestfold. Visit Vestfold says VKT is responsible for local bus transport in Sandefjord and points travelers to VKT Reise for journey planning and VKT Mobilbillett / the VKT app for tickets. VKT’s English page says single tickets apply for one journey with transfer within the ticket time limit, and that a mobile ticket is valid for 90 minutes, while an onboard ticket is valid for 60 minutes.

The current adult local fare is clear from VKT’s fare pages:

Ticket Adult fare
VKT app single ticket NOK 45
Onboard single ticket NOK 55
Child / senior app single ticket NOK 28
Child / senior onboard single ticket NOK 28
Adult 7-day period ticket NOK 310
Adult 30-day period ticket NOK 820

The app is cheaper for adults and more convenient for visitors using local buses more than once. VKT says passengers can buy tickets in the app, on board with a bank card, at sales offices, and at Narvesen Sandefjord station. The English page also says passengers should always have a valid ticket before boarding and scan the ticket when boarding.

Airport-Linked Local Bus

The airport does not work like a city tram stop, but VKT can still help. Torp’s bus page says a shuttle bus runs between the airport and Fokserod, about 3 km from the airport by the E18. From Fokserod, buses continue northbound and southbound. Visit Vestfold says the Fokserod-Torp shuttle runs every 30 minutes on weekdays from about 06:00 to 23:30, hourly on Saturdays from about 08:30 to 22:30, and hourly on Sundays from about 13:30 to 21:30.

For Sandefjord city center, Visit Vestfold also describes a route using the airport-Torp rail shuttle to Torp rail stop and then the train to Sandefjord, or the Fokserod shuttle plus VKT Route 01. This is useful for budget planning, but a taxi is still easier for late arrivals.

Long-Distance Buses

Sandefjord’s long-distance bus logic is split between the airport terminal, Fokserod by the E18, and regional bus/rail connections in town. Torp’s bus page lists the main external bus options:

Place Services to check
Torp terminal Torp-Ekspressen direct airport bus to Oslo
Fokserod FlixBus, Vy bus services and NOR-WAY links on the Oslo-Kristiansand-Stavanger corridor
Sandefjord center VKT local buses, local taxi, rail and ferry access

Do not assume every intercity road service stops at the airport door. Some stop at Fokserod, where the airport shuttle is required. This is excellent if you are moving along the E18 corridor and have planned the connection, but awkward if you arrive late and expect a city-style terminal building.

Taxis, Uber And Private Transfers

Taxis are important in Sandefjord because the airport is near the city, but not integrated into the rail platforms. Torp says taxis are right outside the terminal by the main entrance and exit. It also says travelers should know that prices may vary and that drivers are obliged to inform passengers about prices before the trip starts.

Norway’s free taxi choice rule matters at Torp. You can choose the taxi company you want, and taxi companies operating at Torp are obliged to take you where you want to go. If a driver does not give an advance price, ask before departure.

Uber also operates taxi requests in Sandefjord. Uber’s Sandefjord page says riders can request trips 24/7 in-app or online with upfront pricing, and that the service connects riders with licensed taxi drivers. It also gives an average example of a 13-minute trip costing NOK 362, which is useful as a broad comparison cue for short local trips.

Taxi Fare Cues

Use these as planning numbers:

Trip or fare item Planning cue
Sandefjord center to Torp fixed-price offer Hvalen Taxi advertises NOK 299
Torp airport to Sandefjord taxi estimate Rome2Rio gives about NOK 300-360
Torp to Sandefjord ride time Torp says approximately 10 minutes
Vestfold Taxi waiting time Vestfold Taxi FAQ lists NOK 10 per minute
Vestfold Taxi extra driving beyond set point-to-point routes Vestfold Taxi FAQ lists NOK 25 per km
Uber taxi local cue Uber lists an average 13-minute trip at NOK 362

For a short city transfer, a taxi may cost much more than a bus ticket but saves time and weather exposure. For Oslo, a taxi is rarely sensible unless the group is large or the arrival time is impossible for bus/train. Use Torp-Ekspressen or Vy for Oslo.

Ferry Terminal And Sweden Link

Sandefjord’s ferry role is real and should not be skipped. Color Line operates the Sandefjord-Stromstad ferry route between Norway and Sweden. Color Line says the crossing takes 2.5 hours. Its facts page lists the Sandefjord terminal address as:

Color Line AS, Strandpromenaden 20, 3210 Sandefjord

The same page says the train and bus stop area is within walking distance from the terminal, and that the taxi rank is across the road from the terminal. It also lists onboard accepted currencies as NOK and SEK. That makes Sandefjord center a strong base if your trip combines airport arrival, rail travel and ferry departure.

Fjord Line used to operate Sandefjord-Stromstad, but its own 2023 notice says it stopped the route on 29 October 2023. For current passenger planning, check Color Line first rather than old Fjord Line references.

Ferry Transfer Plan

If arriving at Sandefjord station, walk or take a short taxi to the Color Line terminal depending on luggage and weather. If arriving at Torp airport for the ferry, a taxi to the terminal is the easiest route; rail plus walking is possible if timings work. If driving, check ferry check-in times and parking rules before assuming there is free terminal parking.

Car Rental And Driving

Car rental makes sense for coastal villages, beaches, rural hotels, family cabins and business parks around Vestfold. It is not needed for a central Sandefjord weekend if the trip is airport, ferry, rail and restaurants. Torp’s to-and-from section lists car rental as one of the airport access options, and the airport is located near the E18 corridor, which is useful for regional driving.

For Oslo, do not rent a car just to avoid the train or airport bus. Parking, tolls, city traffic and winter conditions can make the trip slower and more expensive than the direct bus or rail connection. For Telemark, Larvik, Tonsberg and small coastal places, a car can be useful if the schedule is thin.

Best Areas To Stay

Area Best for Transport logic
Sandefjord center / harbor First visit, ferry, restaurants, walking Best all-around base
Near Sandefjord station Rail trips, early departures, ferry connection Easy access to Vy, VKT and taxis
Torp airport area Very early flight or late arrival Practical but less interesting for walking
Fokserod / E18 side Road corridor travel Useful for drivers and some bus transfers
Beach / coastal lodging Summer stays and car trips Check bus frequency or plan taxi/car

For most visitors, Sandefjord center is the best choice. It keeps the ferry terminal, harbor, restaurants, buses, rail and taxis close together. Choose the airport area only when the flight time dominates the trip.

First-Day Plans

If You Land At Torp And Stay In Sandefjord

Use taxi, Uber taxi, or the shuttle plus train. If you arrive with luggage or after dark, ask for the taxi advance price and go directly to the hotel. If you arrive light and the train timing is good, take the shuttle to Torp rail stop and continue by rail to Sandefjord station.

If You Land At Torp And Go To Oslo

Compare Torp-Ekspressen with Vy. Torp-Ekspressen is direct and timed around some low-cost arrivals. Vy is comfortable but includes the airport shuttle to Torp rail stop. During rail works, allow extra time or choose the bus.

If You Arrive By Train And Leave By Ferry

Use Sandefjord station as your anchor. Color Line says the ferry terminal is within walking distance of the rail/bus area, but use a taxi if you have heavy bags, winter weather or a tight sailing.

If You Stay Several Days

Install the VKT app for local buses and consider whether a 7-day ticket makes sense. Adult single tickets are NOK 45 in the app, while the adult 7-day ticket is NOK 310. If you will make many bus rides, the period ticket can pay off quickly.

Common Mistakes

The first mistake is assuming Torp is close to Oslo. It is a useful Oslo-area airport only if the bus or rail timing works. It is much closer to Sandefjord than to Oslo.

The second mistake is forgetting the rail shuttle. Torp rail stop is not inside the terminal, and the shuttle is a separate step.

The third mistake is walking from Torp rail stop to the airport. Vy warns that the road is not suitable for walking because there is no pavement.

The fourth mistake is taking the first taxi without asking the price. Norway has free taxi choice, prices vary, and the driver must provide the price before the ride starts.

The fifth mistake is using old ferry information. Fjord Line left the Sandefjord-Stromstad route in 2023; Color Line is the primary current operator to check.
