Sherbrooke Transport Hub
Sherbrooke Transport Hub
Sherbrooke is the main city of Quebec’s Estrie region, and its transport plan is built around a clear split: the city has a local airport, but most passenger-air arrivals still use Montreal; it has strong intercity bus service toward Montreal, but no useful passenger rail for a normal visitor; it has a real city bus network through Société de transport de Sherbrooke (STS), but many hotels, universities and regional attractions are easier with taxi, Uber or a rental car.
For most travellers, the main gateway is Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL), followed by Limocar/Transdev, rental car, Uber, taxi or private transfer to Sherbrooke. Sherbrooke Airport (YSC/CYSC) is important locally for general aviation, business flying and charter-style use, but it should not be treated as the default scheduled-airline airport for a visitor. The intercity bus anchor is Limocar at 60, King West Street, Sherbrooke, QC J1H 1P3, and the local bus system is STS.
The practical Sherbrooke question is therefore not “where is the nearest airport?” It is: did you land at YUL, are you arriving by Limocar from Montreal, are you staying downtown, near Université de Sherbrooke, near Bishop’s/Lennoxville, near Jacques-Cartier/Carrefour de l’Estrie, or outside the city in the Eastern Townships?
Fast Facts
| Need | Best Sherbrooke answer | Practical cue |
|---|---|---|
| Main passenger airport | Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) | Best scheduled-airline gateway for most visitors; connect by Limocar, car rental, Uber/taxi or private transfer. |
| Local airport | Sherbrooke Airport (YSC/CYSC), Cookshire-Eaton | Useful for general aviation and business/charter operations; do not assume scheduled passenger flights. |
| Intercity bus hub | Limocar, 60 King West Street, Sherbrooke | Main Montreal-Sherbrooke axis; Limocar lists express and local lines and about 30 departures daily in its marketing. |
| Local transit | Société de transport de Sherbrooke (STS) | City bus network; check STS titles and fares before travel. |
| Taxi tariff | Taxis de Sherbrooke: CAD 5.15 start, CAD 2.05/km, CAD 0.77/min waiting, 15% night rate 23:00-05:00 | Official local taxi cue for city rides and late arrivals. |
| Uber cue | Uber works as an app-ride layer in Sherbrooke; Uber estimates Sherbrooke-Dorval around CAD 295 on a sample route page | Use app quote for airport/private-transfer comparison. |
| Rail reality | No practical passenger rail service into Sherbrooke for ordinary travel | Use Montreal rail, then bus/car to Sherbrooke if arriving by train in Quebec. |
| Best car-rental use | Eastern Townships, ski, lakes, university moves, business parks and rural stays | Downtown/university stays can often use STS plus taxi/Uber. |
Arrival Strategy
If You Fly Into YUL
YUL is the airport most Sherbrooke visitors should plan around. It has the international and domestic airline network, rental cars, taxis, airport buses and onward connections. From YUL, Sherbrooke is not a quick airport-city ride; it is a regional transfer of roughly 150-170 km, depending on route and final address.
Budget travellers usually compare airport-to-Montreal transfer plus Limocar from Montreal to Sherbrooke. Limocar says its express line runs the Montreal-Sherbrooke axis in about 2 hours, and its main site says the network serves 25 municipalities across the Eastern Townships and Montreal with around 30 departures each day. Rome2Rio’s YUL-Sherbrooke page describes Limocar from Sherbrooke/Terminus to Montreal every few hours, with tickets around CAD 35-45 and a journey around 2h45 in its example. For an airport arrival, add the airport-to-Montreal bus-terminal step and waiting time.
If the flight lands late, if you have ski gear, family luggage or a hotel outside downtown Sherbrooke, price a direct car. Uber’s Sherbrooke-to-Dorval route page gives an average price cue of about CAD 295 for that long transfer, while Ridebooker-style private-transfer listings can be much higher, with sample YUL-Sherbrooke car quotes around CAD 759. Those are not fixed fares, but they show the range between app ride and pre-booked private transfer.
If You Use Sherbrooke Airport YSC
Sherbrooke Airport is real and locally important. Its official site describes it as an Estrie air gateway with airport services and facilities, and Eastern Townships tourism describes services such as a flight school, restaurant, parking, hangars, weather data, fuelling and aircraft cleaning. It is in Cookshire-Eaton, east/northeast of the city, not in downtown Sherbrooke.
For an ordinary visitor booking airline tickets, YSC should be treated as a general-aviation / charter / business-aircraft airport, not as the first scheduled-airline choice. If you are arriving there by private aircraft or charter, arrange taxi, rental car or pickup in advance. Do not expect a YUL-style airport bus, taxi queue or late-night public transit chain.
If You Arrive By Limocar
Limocar is the cleanest intercity bus layer for Sherbrooke. Its contact page lists 60, King West Street, Sherbrooke, Quebec J1H 1P3, with customer service 1-819-562-8899 and toll-free 1-866-692-8899. The same operator’s network pages focus on the Montreal-Sherbrooke axis, with express and local lines.
Arriving at King West is convenient for downtown, Lac des Nations, central hotels and STS/taxi continuation. It is less convenient for Bishop’s University in Lennoxville, the Université de Sherbrooke campus, suburban hotels around Carrefour de l’Estrie, or rural Eastern Townships stays. For those, plan the last kilometre before the bus arrives.
Airport Transfer Planner
YUL To Sherbrooke By Limocar
This is usually the best value route if the schedule works. The travel chain is:
- Land at YUL.
- Get from the airport to the Montreal intercity departure point or an applicable Limocar-linked stop.
- Ride Limocar toward Sherbrooke.
- Finish by STS, taxi, Uber or pickup.
This works best for solo travellers, students, downtown hotels, university trips with light luggage, and daytime arrivals. It works poorly for late flights, heavy ski gear, families with several bags, or rural hotels.
YUL To Sherbrooke By Car
Driving is the simplest door-to-door answer. A rental car makes sense if Sherbrooke is the start of an Eastern Townships road trip, ski weekend, lake stay, Bromont/Magog/Orford loop, business visit or family trip. A private transfer makes sense if you do not want to drive after a flight. Use live app quotes and pre-booked transfer quotes rather than guessing.
Planning bands:
- CAD 35-45: Limocar-style intercity bus ticket cue from Montreal/Sherbrooke route examples, before local airport transfer costs.
- Around CAD 295: Uber sample cue for Sherbrooke-Dorval style trip.
- CAD 700+: private transfer examples for reserved YUL-Sherbrooke vehicles.
These numbers are directional. Date, time, luggage, vehicle size, weather, traffic and pickup point all matter.
YHU / Saint-Hubert And YQB
Montréal Saint-Hubert (YHU) is geographically closer than YUL in some searches, but it is not automatically the best visitor airport. Use it only if your airline actually lands there and ground transport makes sense. Québec City (YQB) can work for a broader Quebec itinerary, but it is not a natural Sherbrooke airport unless the trip continues toward Quebec City or the fare is much better.
YSC To Sherbrooke
If you are arriving at Sherbrooke Airport, arrange pickup before landing. The airport is outside the city, and a normal visitor should not assume a frequent bus connection. Taxi or rental car is the practical layer.
Intercity Bus Strategy
Limocar / Transdev
Limocar is the main name to know. The operator’s site says it serves the Eastern Townships and Montreal, and its network page says the express line has 12 buses every day on the Montreal-Sherbrooke line, with an approximate 2-hour express trip. Its main page also highlights around 30 departures daily across the network, free Wi-Fi on board and online ticket purchase.
Use Limocar for:
- Montreal to Sherbrooke.
- Sherbrooke to Montreal.
- Bromont / Eastern Townships corridor stops where listed.
- Students and downtown travellers who do not need a car.
- YUL trips when the Montreal transfer and schedule line up.
Check the exact boarding point before travel. “Montreal” can mean a central terminal or a stop that still requires transit from YUL. “Sherbrooke” usually points to the King West terminal area, but route details should be checked on the day.
Regional Connections
Sherbrooke is the centre of Estrie, but many regional destinations are not simple bus-terminal-to-door trips. Magog, Orford, Bromont, Coaticook, Lennoxville, North Hatley and rural inns may need a car or pickup. Limocar can solve the Montreal-Sherbrooke spine; it does not solve every lake, mountain or village stay.
Local STS Bus System
STS operates Sherbrooke’s city bus network. The City of Sherbrooke states that STS operates the city’s transportation services, including adapted transport. STS has its own fare/title page and mobile tools, including STS+ references on the official site.
Current visitor fare cues from local 2026 guidance point to:
- About CAD 3.50 for a single ride.
- About CAD 6 for a round trip.
- About CAD 9 for a day pass.
- About CAD 75 for a monthly pass.
Check the STS fare page before publishing or travelling because pass categories, student products and reduced-fare rules can change. For a normal visitor, STS is best for downtown, university areas, shopping corridors and daytime movement. It is weaker for late-night transfers, rural hotels, airport transfers and luggage-heavy trips.
Useful STS Planning Logic
Choose STS when the origin and destination are both inside the city bus grid. Use taxi/Uber when:
- The trip is late.
- The hotel is outside the bus corridor.
- You have luggage.
- You are connecting from Limocar to Lennoxville or a suburban hotel.
- The weather is bad.
- You need to reach YSC, Magog, Orford or a rural inn.
Rail Reality
Sherbrooke is historically a rail city, but not a practical passenger-rail destination today. Do not build a visitor itinerary around arriving by VIA Rail into Sherbrooke. If the trip starts by train from Toronto, Ottawa or Quebec City, use VIA Rail into Montreal or another served city, then continue by Limocar, rental car or private transfer.
This distinction matters for SEO and user trust. A generic “train station” paragraph would mislead the traveller. Sherbrooke’s useful intercity hub is the bus/road side, not a passenger rail station.
Taxi, Uber And Private Transfers
Taxis de Sherbrooke
Taxis de Sherbrooke publishes clear local tariff cues:
- CAD 5.15 starting rate.
- CAD 2.05 per kilometre with a passenger.
- CAD 0.77 per minute waiting, or CAD 46.20 per hour.
- 15% night rate between 23:00 and 05:00.
Use taxis for Limocar arrival to hotel, late-night city movement, university-campus transfers, hospital visits and trips where STS would require a long wait. For a YUL transfer, ask for a quote rather than assuming the meter will be comfortable.
Uber
Uber operates as an app ride option in Sherbrooke. Its Sherbrooke taxi/ride pages say UberX can be requested in the city, and its local taxi FAQ page gives an average 11-minute ride around CAD 20 as a planning cue. For long trips, Uber’s Sherbrooke-Dorval page gives a much higher average cue, around CAD 295.
Uber is most useful for:
- Comparing taxi prices.
- Late Limocar arrivals.
- Downtown to university or suburban hotel trips.
- Sherbrooke to YUL when a direct car is worth the price.
Private Transfers
Private transfers are the premium option. They can be sensible for families, ski equipment, business travellers, conference groups and late-night airport arrivals. Get a written quote with vehicle size, luggage allowance, waiting time and taxes.
Car Rental And Driving
Car rental is often the best Sherbrooke transport upgrade. The city itself can be done with STS, taxi and Uber, but the region is the reason many visitors come. A car helps with:
- Mont-Orford.
- Magog and Lake Memphremagog.
- North Hatley.
- Bromont.
- Coaticook.
- Rural inns and vineyards.
- University move-in trips.
- Winter sports gear.
If the stay is downtown plus Université de Sherbrooke only, you may not need a car. If the stay is “Eastern Townships” rather than just Sherbrooke city, rent one.
Best Areas To Stay
Downtown / King West / Lac des Nations
Best for Limocar arrival, restaurants, central Sherbrooke, walking and taxi access. This is the easiest no-car base.
Université de Sherbrooke / Mont-Bellevue
Best for campus visits, conferences, student move-in and hospital/university errands. Check STS routes and use taxi/Uber for luggage.
Jacques-Cartier / Carrefour de l’Estrie
Best for shopping, suburban hotels, car access and road trips. Less romantic, but practical if you have a rental car.
Lennoxville / Bishop’s University
Best for Bishop’s University and a quieter college-town feel. It is not the easiest base for downtown Limocar arrivals unless you plan taxi/Uber or a pickup.
Magog / Orford / Eastern Townships
Choose this only if the trip is regional and you have a car or arranged transfer. Do not treat it as a Sherbrooke city hotel area.
First-Time Checklist
- Check whether the flight lands at YUL, YHU, YQB or YSC.
- Treat YUL as the main passenger-air gateway for most Sherbrooke trips.
- Use Limocar for the Montreal-Sherbrooke bus spine when schedules fit.
- Use STS for city movement, not for long airport transfers.
- Do not plan on passenger rail into Sherbrooke.
- Use taxi/Uber for Limocar-to-hotel transfers with luggage.
- Rent a car for Eastern Townships stays outside the city.
- Add winter-weather buffer from December through March.
- Check whether your hotel is downtown, university-side, Lennoxville, suburban or rural.
- Price YUL direct car transfers before assuming they are affordable.
