Sohar Transport Hub
Sohar, also written Suhar in several official airport sources, is a North Al Batinah transport base where airport, port, industrial-zone and intercity road logic matter more than a single downtown station. The city has its own airport, Sohar International Airport (OHS / OOSH), but many international travellers still compare it with Muscat International Airport (MCT) because Muscat has the larger route network. For movement inside and around Sohar, the practical toolkit is taxi, hotel transfer, OmanTaxi, OTAXI where available, Mwasalat intercity buses, private drivers and rental cars.
Sohar is not a city where a visitor should expect a working passenger rail station or city rail system. Oman Rail and Hafeet Rail are important future and regional projects, especially for Sohar-UAE freight and eventual passenger context, but they do not replace road transport for a hotel arrival today. A useful Sohar Transport Hub guide must therefore be honest: airport and road first, rail project context second.

Arrival Strategy
Start by checking the airport code on the ticket. OHS is Sohar’s airport. If the ticket says MCT, the traveller is landing in Muscat and still has a long intercity leg. If the ticket says DXB, SHJ or another UAE airport, the trip becomes a cross-border road plan and should be treated separately with visa, insurance and border timing.
For most first arrivals at OHS, taxi, hotel pickup or pre-arranged transfer is the correct first move. The airport is close to the city compared with MCT, but close does not mean walkable. Sohar is spread along the coast and industrial corridors; hotels, Sohar Port, the freezone, old souq, beach areas and residential districts are not all in one compact centre.
If arriving through MCT, compare three options before booking: rental car from Muscat, Mwasalat intercity bus, or private transfer. The cheapest option is usually bus, but it requires matching the departure point, arrival point, luggage and onward taxi in Sohar. The easiest option is a pre-booked car, especially for business visitors going to the port, freezone or industrial sites.
Sohar International Airport OHS
What the airport is
The Civil Aviation Authority describes Sohar International Airport as operating under IATA code OHS, inaugurated on 18 November 2014, and serving as an important aviation facility and alternative to Muscat International Airport. The same CAA page lists an annual passenger capacity of 70,000, a 1,200-square-metre terminal, four passenger boarding bridges, seven check-in counters, and a 4-kilometre runway. That tells travellers what to expect: a small airport with practical facilities, not a huge Gulf transfer hub.
The Suhar Airport official site lists a support call number +968 24351234 and shows the airport as part of Oman Airports alongside Muscat, Salalah and Duqm. It also links out to Suhar city information, hotels and car rental. Before flying, check live departures/arrivals and airline status because route availability can change seasonally.
OHS to Sohar city
For OHS to a normal Sohar hotel, taxi or hotel pickup is usually easiest. A travel airport guide gives a practical taxi estimate of 5-8 OMR and 15-25 minutes from central Sohar to the terminal. Use that as a planning band, not a guaranteed official fare. Exact cost can change by hotel district, waiting, luggage, night timing and whether the ride is booked by app, hotel or street taxi.
For business trips, send the driver the exact pin. “Sohar Port”, “Sohar Freezone”, “industrial area”, “Sohar University” and “Sohar city” are not the same destination. A ride that is short to one side of Sohar can be a longer coastal or highway trip to another.
This is especially important for port and freezone visitors. Security gates, truck entrances, staff gates and visitor reception points may be separated by several kilometres. If the host sends only a company name, ask for the gate number, building name and whether a visitor pass is issued at the entrance or in advance. A taxi can drop you at the wrong industrial gate and still be technically “near Sohar Port”, which is not enough for a meeting.
When OHS is not enough
OHS is convenient when the flight exists. The problem is route choice. Muscat International Airport has far more flights, more rental-car supply and stronger international connections. If OHS flight timing is weak, MCT plus a planned road transfer may be better than waiting a day for the perfect local arrival.
Muscat Airport Alternative
Muscat International Airport is the main Oman gateway. Its ground-access page explains airport taxis from the arrivals area and city taxi taximeter expectations. For a Sohar traveller, MCT means the first leg is not “airport to hotel”; it is an intercity transfer of around 214 km in route-planner examples from OHS to MCT, often around 2.5 to 3 hours by road before stops.
For MCT to Sohar:
- Use rental car if the itinerary includes Sohar, Barka, Rustaq, Nakhal, Muscat and onward Oman travel.
- Use Mwasalat if the timetable, baggage and arrival point fit.
- Use private transfer or company driver for business trips, port visits, late arrivals and groups.
- Avoid tight same-day schedules if the flight arrives late or the Sohar appointment is fixed.
If choosing a bus from Muscat, confirm whether your departure point is airport-linked or requires a taxi to the relevant Mwasalat point. A cheap bus fare is not the whole cost if you need two taxis at either end.
Mwasalat Buses
Mwasalat is Oman’s main public bus and intercity coach operator. Its website provides city/intercity service information, ticketing and all-routes search. For Sohar, Mwasalat is important because many trips are intercity rather than urban: Muscat-Sohar, Sohar-Muscat, Sohar toward Buraimi or other North Al Batinah movement, and long-distance Oman road travel.
The Mwasalat ticket site can issue regular tickets and lets travellers check routes before travel. Use it before writing down any departure time, because long-distance services can change by season, demand and operational updates. For a traveller, the practical steps are:
- Search Mwasalat for the exact route and travel date.
- Confirm the Sohar boarding/arrival point.
- Add taxi or pickup from the stop to the hotel, port or industrial site.
- Check whether luggage is accepted and whether the ticket is digital or needs counter handling.
Mwasalat is best for budget travellers, daytime movement, light luggage and simple hotel transfers. It is weaker for late arrivals, industrial-zone appointments, family luggage and trips where the final address is not near the bus stop.
For a serious connection, call or message the hotel before relying on the bus stop. Ask how far the stop is from reception, whether taxis wait nearby, and whether the hotel can send a car to the Mwasalat stop. This small check can save a long roadside wait in heat or after dark.
Taxis, OmanTaxi And OTAXI
Local taxis and hotel cars
Taxi is the dependable layer in Sohar. Use it for OHS arrivals, hotel-to-port movement, beach hotels, late evenings, industrial-zone meetings and last-mile connections from Mwasalat. For an OHS-to-city transfer, keep 5-8 OMR as a planning band from airport-guide data, then check the live quote or hotel price.
For MCT-to-Sohar private transfers, prices vary widely by vehicle, waiting, pickup time and whether the car is one-way or round-trip. Social and informal estimates often cite much higher road-transfer costs than local city taxis. For business travel, ask the hotel, company host or driver for a written quote in OMR before the trip.
OmanTaxi
OmanTaxi describes itself as the official taxi app of Oman and says it is authorized by the Ministry of Transport. Its services include private taxi, sharing taxi and female taxi options. For travellers who want a regulated app layer, it is one of the first options to check. Availability around Sohar should still be tested live, especially late at night or outside central areas.
OTAXI
OTAXI’s app listings describe ride booking with pickup and destination, service-class selection, real-time car tracking and payment-method choice. It markets rides around Muscat and Oman; in Sohar, treat it as a useful app to check rather than a guaranteed supply. If the app shows limited cars, ask the hotel to call a taxi or arrange a known driver.
Fare workflow
The safest workflow is to compare three numbers:
- hotel or company-driver quote;
- OmanTaxi / OTAXI live quote if available;
- local taxi estimate from the pickup point.
Choose the most reliable option when the trip is tied to a flight, port access, border timing or an early meeting.
Rail And Oman-UAE Context
Sohar is central to Oman’s rail story, but not yet a visitor rail station. Oman Rail’s Oman-UAE Rail Project describes a 303 km railway linking Sohar and Abu Dhabi, with future passenger trains designed for up to 200 km/h and Sohar-Abu Dhabi travel time described as about 1 hour 40 minutes in project materials. Hafeet Rail is the cross-border project name to watch, and Oman official updates have described progress on the link.
For a traveller today, this is context only. Do not plan a Sohar hotel, airport transfer or Oman itinerary around a rail timetable unless the operator publishes live passenger service, station details, fares and booking for your travel date. For now, use bus, taxi, rental car, private transfer or flights.
This distinction helps avoid low-quality travel advice. “Sohar rail project” is real. “Take the train from Sohar today” is not a safe visitor instruction.
Car Rental And Driving
Car rental is often the strongest Sohar option because the region is road-oriented. Rent if the trip includes Sohar Port, Sohar Freezone, industrial estates, Barka, Rustaq, Nakhal, Muscat, Al Buraimi, UAE border routes, beaches or multiple business stops. A rental can also make sense if you land at MCT and need flexibility on the Muscat-Sohar road.
Check:
- whether the car can cross into the UAE;
- insurance excess and roadside help;
- hotel and worksite parking;
- whether the road trip requires a 4WD;
- speed-camera and fatigue risk after a long flight;
- pickup/dropoff fees if collecting in Muscat and sleeping in Sohar.
For a short Sohar-only stay, taxi and hotel transfer may be simpler than renting.
Best Areas To Stay
Sohar city / souq side
Best for local errands, restaurants, older city movement and basic taxi access. Good when the trip is not tied to the port or airport.
Beach and corniche side
Best for leisure, sea views and a quieter stay. Taxis or rental cars are usually needed for airport, bus and industrial-zone movement.
Airport / western approach
Best for early OHS flights, short stays and road access. Less useful for classic sightseeing unless the hotel price is strong.
Sohar Port and Freezone side
Best for business travellers with port, logistics, petrochemical or industrial appointments. Choose by the exact gate or company site, not by the word “Sohar” alone.
Muscat instead
If the trip is mostly Muscat meetings or sightseeing with only one Sohar day trip, stay in Muscat and arrange a day driver or rental car. Sohar is not a convenient base for daily Muscat tourism.
Practical Transfer Plans
OHS to Sohar hotel
Use taxi, hotel pickup or app ride. Plan around 5-8 OMR in many normal city cases, then check the live quote and final district.
OHS to Sohar Port or Freezone
Use pre-arranged taxi, company driver or rental car. Send the exact gate and company name. Do not rely on a generic city-centre estimate.
MCT to Sohar
Compare Mwasalat, rental car and private transfer. If arriving late, pre-book a car or sleep near Muscat airport and travel the next morning.
Sohar to Muscat
Use Mwasalat for budget travel, or rent/driver for flexible stops. Add taxi time from the Sohar hotel to the bus pickup point.
Sohar to UAE
Use rental car or private transfer only after checking border rules, insurance, visa eligibility and whether the vehicle is allowed to cross.
First-Time Checklist
- Confirm whether the ticket says OHS, MCT or a UAE airport.
- Check OHS live flights because the airport is smaller than Muscat.
- Save the Suhar Airport support call +968 24351234.
- For OHS arrivals, compare hotel pickup, taxi and OmanTaxi/OTAXI.
- For MCT arrivals, decide bus, rental car or private transfer before landing.
- Check Mwasalat route and ticketing for Muscat-Sohar movement.
- Use exact pins for Sohar Port, Freezone and industrial areas.
- Rent a car for multi-stop Oman or UAE-border itineraries.
- Treat Oman Rail and Hafeet Rail as future/project context until passenger service is live.
- Choose the hotel by the first appointment, not just by city name.
