Tetouan Transport Hub
Tetouan is a compact northern Morocco hub where the transport question is not “which train station should I use?” but which road gateway fits the trip. The city has its own airport, Sania Ramel Airport (TTU/GMTN), close to the urban area; a central bus station around Avenue 9 Avril; a mapped CTM Tetouan point on Boulevard Hassan II; shared taxi and bus movement toward Martil, M’diq, Cabo Negro, Fnideq, the Ceuta-side border corridor, Chefchaouen, Tangier Ville station, Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport (TNG/GMTT) and Tanger Med.
A useful Tetouan Transport Hub guide must be direct about rail. Tetouan does not currently work as an ONCF passenger rail city for normal visitor planning. If you want Moroccan rail, the practical rail gateway is Tangier Ville railway station, then road transport to Tetouan. That single distinction prevents a lot of bad planning, because Tetouan is close to several important places but most of those links are by road, taxi, coach or shared taxi.
The city coordinate anchor used here is 35.578450, -5.368370. OurAirports lists Sania Ramel Airport as a large_airport with IATA TTU, ICAO GMTN, scheduled service marked yes, coordinates 35.594299, -5.320020, and municipality Tétouan. The article-set airport match places TTU about 4.7 km east of Tetouan by direct geographic distance. OSRM sampled routing from TTU to the medina anchor returned about 6.4 km / 9 minutes, and to the Gare Routière area about 8.6 km / 10 minutes in clear conditions.

Arrival Strategy
If the ticket says TTU, the transfer is short. Sania Ramel Airport is close enough that a taxi or pre-arranged ride is usually the least complicated first move, especially with luggage, a late arrival, or a medina guesthouse where the last streets may be pedestrian or narrow. Because the airport is close, do not over-engineer the transfer: the main task is confirming the hotel drop-off point and whether the driver can reach the door.
If the ticket says TNG, plan it as a Tangier-to-Tetouan road transfer. Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport has more route choice for many travellers, but it is not in Tetouan. A private transfer can be efficient for families or late arrivals; solo travellers can compare airport-to-Tangier movement plus coach/shared taxi to Tetouan. If the trip starts by train, use Tangier Ville railway station as the rail side of the plan.
If the next destination is Martil, M’diq, Cabo Negro or Fnideq, ask whether the vehicle goes directly from your arrival point or whether you should go first to a taxi rank/bus station. If the next destination is Chefchaouen, check CTM or coach options before relying on a random taxi quote. If the next destination is Tanger Med, confirm the port terminal and sailing time before choosing a road vehicle.
Airport: Sania Ramel Airport TTU/GMTN
Sania Ramel Airport (TTU/GMTN) is Tetouan’s local airport. The checked airport dataset lists it as a large_airport with scheduled service marked yes, IATA TTU, ICAO GMTN, coordinates 35.594299, -5.320020, and municipality Tétouan. The airport has also appeared under spellings such as Saniet R’mel or Saniat R’mel in aviation data, so use the IATA code TTU when checking tickets.
The airport is very close by regional standards. OSRM sampled routing returned about 6.4 km / 9 minutes from TTU to the Tetouan medina anchor, about 8.6 km / 10 minutes to the Gare Routière on Avenue 9 Avril, and about 6.0 km / 8 minutes to the mapped CTM point on Boulevard Hassan II. These samples are clear-road anchors, not promises for arrival queues, taxi waiting or medina access.
For a medina riad or guesthouse, ask the accommodation for the nearest vehicle-access point. Tetouan’s old-city streets can make the last 200-500 metres more important than the airport distance. For hotels near the newer town, CTM, Avenue 9 Avril or the administrative side, a direct taxi is usually simple.
Airport Transfers and Taxi Planning
For TTU airport to central Tetouan, use MAD 50-120+ as a practical planning band for a direct taxi or arranged driver. The lower end is possible when the ride is short and straightforward; the higher end covers late arrivals, luggage, waiting, hotel-arranged service or a driver who must find a difficult guesthouse access point. Treat this as a planning band, not a legal tariff.
For TTU to Martil, M’diq or Cabo Negro, price it as a coastal transfer rather than a city taxi. The route to Martil is short, but resort, beach and apartment addresses can add waiting and route confusion. For TTU to Tangier, Chefchaouen or Tanger Med, ask for a full intercity quote and compare with CTM/coach/shared taxi options.
Public buses may exist on local corridors, but the airport is close enough that most visitors should first compare taxi cost against time, luggage and hotel location. A cheap staged route is only useful if the stop is easy to find and the next transfer is obvious.
Rail Reality: Use Tangier Ville for ONCF
No practical ONCF passenger rail station is the key rail note for Tetouan. Tetouan is not a practical ONCF passenger rail station city for current visitor planning. The rail gateway is Tangier Ville railway station, which connects to ONCF and Al Boraq services for Rabat, Casablanca and other rail-city itineraries. OSRM sampled routing from Tetouan medina to Tangier Ville returned about 56.6 km / 58 minutes in clear conditions.
This means a rail traveller should build the journey in two parts: ONCF/Al Boraq to Tangier Ville, then road transport from Tangier to Tetouan. Depending on time of day and luggage, that road leg may be a taxi, private transfer, CTM/coach option, or shared-taxi route from an appropriate Tangier rank.
Do not treat a map label or an old station reference as a normal passenger rail plan. If an accommodation or booking site mentions a “Tetouan station,” check whether it means bus station, old rail building, taxi point, or a road-transfer meeting point.
Bus and Coach: Gare Routière, CTM and Operator Tickets
Tetouan’s main bus-station geography is more useful than a generic “central station” phrase. Nominatim returned Gare Routière on Avenue 9 Avril at about 35.560718, -5.372000. It also returned CTM Tetouan on Boulevard Hassan II at about 35.567463, -5.372081. These two anchors are close to the medina/new-town edge but should still be treated as distinct pickup points.
For CTM, follow the official booking channel and the address printed on the ticket. For Supratours, check whether the route is sold from Tetouan itself or via another city connection, because Supratours search results and map data can point strongly to nearby Chefchaouen or Tangier-related road planning rather than a single universal Tetouan stop. The practical rule is simple: operator ticket first, map label second.
For Chefchaouen, Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Fes or other long routes, CTM or another scheduled coach is usually more predictable than negotiating a whole private taxi. For Martil, M’diq, Cabo Negro and Fnideq, shared taxis and local road transport may be faster and more frequent than intercity coaches.
Regional Routes: Martil, M’diq, Fnideq, Chefchaouen and Tanger Med
Tetouan’s strongest transport role is regional. Martil is the closest beach-city route; OSRM sampled routing from the medina anchor returned about 12.7 km / 17 minutes. Cabo Negro sampled at about 17.6 km / 20 minutes, and M’diq at about 20.2 km / 20 minutes. These are short enough for taxis or shared taxis but still need destination-specific pricing in high season.
Fnideq and the Ceuta-side corridor sit farther north. OSRM sampled routing from Tetouan medina to Fnideq returned about 35.3 km / 29 minutes. If your destination is the border area, a ferry-linked plan, shopping trip or Spanish-side connection, confirm the exact drop-off and waiting rules. A driver may quote differently for Fnideq town, the border approach, or a return trip.
Chefchaouen is a mountain road route, not a quick city hop. OSRM sampled routing from Tetouan medina returned about 61.4 km / 74 minutes. For a day trip, compare coach times, shared taxi, private driver and return availability. The outbound ride is only half the plan; the return matters more if you are trying to catch a flight or train later.
Tangier Ville and Tanger Med are different targets. Tangier Ville is the rail-city link. Tanger Med is the port/ferry/logistics side, with terminal-specific timing. OSRM sampled routing from Tetouan medina to a Tanger Med terminal-area anchor returned about 60.0 km / 53 minutes, while Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport sampled at about 75.8 km / 72 minutes.
Local Taxis, Grand Taxis and Apps
Inside Tetouan, petit taxis are useful for short hops between the medina edge, new town, CTM, Gare Routière, hotels and administrative areas. A practical short-ride planning band is MAD 10-30, with higher totals possible at night, in traffic, with luggage or if the driver waits. Carry small notes and confirm the fare or meter practice before the ride begins.
Grand taxis matter for Martil, M’diq, Fnideq, Chefchaouen and other shared routes. They may operate by seat or as a whole vehicle. Before leaving, confirm whether you are paying for one seat or the whole car, whether luggage is included, and where the vehicle will drop you.
Do not build a Tetouan airport or regional plan around Uber. App coverage and driver supply can change, and northern Morocco road movement still relies heavily on regular taxis, shared grand taxis, hotel drivers, coaches and local operators. If an app such as inDrive or another quote tool is active, use it to compare, not as the only plan.
MAD Fare Planning
These MAD ranges are planning figures, not legal tariffs. Use official operator pages, ticket counters, taxi-rank quotes and hotel confirmations for current exact prices.
| Ride or ticket | Practical planning range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| TTU airport to central Tetouan | MAD 50-120+ | Short ride, but luggage, late time and medina access matter |
| Short petit taxi inside Tetouan | MAD 10-30 | Medina edge, CTM, Gare Routière and new-town hops |
| Tetouan to Martil | MAD 30-100+ | Shared taxi, petit/grand taxi or private quote changes the price |
| Tetouan to M’diq / Cabo Negro | MAD 60-180+ | Resort and apartment addresses can cost more |
| Tetouan to Fnideq / Ceuta-side corridor | MAD 100-250+ | Confirm drop-off and whether the trip is one-way or return |
| Tetouan to Chefchaouen | MAD 80-250+ by shared/coach; more private | Return timing is the key issue |
| Tetouan to Tangier Ville | MAD 80-250+ by shared/coach; MAD 400-800+ private | Rail connection timing can justify private transfer |
| Tetouan to TNG airport | MAD 500-900+ private | Price as an intercity airport transfer |
| CTM/coach ticket | Operator fare | Use official CTM or route operator channels |
For a solo traveller in daylight, shared taxis and coaches can be good value. For a family, late arrival, airport connection, ferry time or mountain day trip, a private quote may be more rational even if the headline price is higher.
Route Samples from Tetouan
OSRM sampled routing gives road-distance anchors. These are not timetable promises and should be adjusted for traffic, waiting, pickup point, medina walking and seasonal beach congestion.
| Route | Sampled road distance / time | Use |
|---|---|---|
| TTU airport to Tetouan medina | 6.4 km / 9 min | Local airport arrival |
| TTU airport to Gare Routière | 8.6 km / 10 min | Airport-to-bus transfer |
| TTU airport to CTM Tetouan | 6.0 km / 8 min | Airport-to-coach transfer |
| Tetouan medina to Martil | 12.7 km / 17 min | Beach/local coast route |
| Tetouan medina to Cabo Negro | 17.6 km / 20 min | Resort/apartment transfer |
| Tetouan medina to M’diq | 20.2 km / 20 min | Coast route |
| Tetouan medina to Fnideq | 35.3 km / 29 min | Ceuta-side corridor |
| Tetouan medina to Chefchaouen | 61.4 km / 74 min | Mountain/blue-city route |
| Tetouan medina to Tangier Ville station | 56.6 km / 58 min | ONCF/Al Boraq rail gateway |
| Tetouan medina to Tanger Med area | 60.0 km / 53 min | Ferry/port planning |
| Tetouan medina to TNG airport | 75.8 km / 72 min | Alternative airport transfer |
Best Areas to Stay for Transport
Stay near the medina edge if the trip is cultural and you want walking access without being too deep for taxi pickup. Ask the accommodation for the nearest vehicle-access gate.
Stay near Boulevard Hassan II / CTM / new town if the next move is a coach, airport transfer or early road departure. It is less atmospheric than the medina but easier with luggage.
Stay near Gare Routière / Avenue 9 Avril only when bus departure convenience matters most. For leisure stays, a nearby but quieter hotel may be more comfortable.
Stay in Martil, M’diq, Cabo Negro or Fnideq only if the coast is the destination. Do not treat these as central Tetouan. Airport, coach and rail-gateway transfers need separate planning.
Stay in Tangier instead of Tetouan if the rail connection, Al Boraq timing, ferry from Tanger Med, or TNG flight is the main constraint. Tetouan is close, but a missed train or ferry can cost more than a better-positioned hotel.
Decision Guide
Choose TTU airport when the flight schedule works and the destination is Tetouan, Martil or nearby coast. The transfer is short and simple.
Choose TNG airport when international flight choice, price or timing is better. Price the road leg separately and do not describe it as a Tetouan city transfer.
Choose Tangier Ville railway station when arriving by ONCF/Al Boraq. The Tetouan leg is road transport after the train.
Choose CTM or scheduled coach for longer routes such as Chefchaouen, Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca or Fes when reliability matters. Choose grand taxi/shared taxi for coastal or short regional routes where frequent road movement matters more than a reserved seat.
First-Time Checklist
- Check the flight code: TTU is Tetouan; TNG is Tangier.
- Ask the hotel for the nearest vehicle-access point if staying inside or near the medina.
- For rail, book to Tangier Ville, then plan the Tetouan road leg.
- For CTM, use the ticket address; do not assume every bus leaves from the same point.
- For Martil, M’diq, Cabo Negro or Fnideq, agree whether the fare is shared-seat or whole-car.
- For Chefchaouen, check the return plan before committing to a day trip.
- For Tanger Med, confirm the exact ferry terminal and buffer time.
- Carry small MAD notes for short taxis, shared taxis and station transfers.
