Why Kisangani Matters
Britannica describes Kisangani as a northeastern DRC city lying along the Congo River just below Boyoma, formerly Stanley, Falls. It is the country’s major inland port after Kinshasa. Britannica says the Boyoma Falls consist of seven cataracts that impede river navigation above Kisangani for about 56 miles / 90 km, and that a short railroad and road were built to carry river freight and goods between Kisangani and Ubundu above the falls. Britannica’s Boyoma Falls entry adds that the falls extend for 60 miles / 100 km along the Lualaba River between Ubundu and Kisangani, drop about 200 feet / 60 m in elevation, and that beyond the cataract the Lualaba becomes the Congo River.
The city is also Stanleyville in the historical imagination. Britannica lists Falls Station and Stanleyville as former names and says the city was established in 1883 and became a major centre of northern Congo from the late 1800s. Kupi’s history page adds useful local context: the city was founded in 1883 by Henry Morton Stanley, named Stanleyville, renamed Kisangani in 1966, and became the furthest navigable port upstream because Boyoma Falls blocked navigation for roughly 100 km. This is not a small detail. It explains why Kisangani is a river, cargo and aviation city rather than a simple tourist stop.

The U.S. State Department advisory dated June 4, 2026 lists DRC as Level 4 / Do Not Travel. Canada says avoid all travel to DRC because of the fragile security situation and the Ebola outbreak, and adds that tourist facilities are very limited in Kinshasa and virtually non-existent outside the capital. Acukwik adds more operational detail: FZIC is a civil airport at N00-28.9/E025-20.3, elevation 1,396 ft, with JET only fuel, ILS and VOR/DME approaches, longest primary runway 11,483 x 148 ft on 12/30, asphalt surface, low airport light intensity, airport of entry yes, customs yes, handling mandatory yes, airport hours HJ, control tower H24, UTC +2 and distance 16 km ESE of the city. Business Air News gives a runway benchmark of 3,500 m / 11,482 ft paved and elevation 1,396 ft. Trip.com’s FKI airport page says Bangoka International Airport is about 15.82 km from downtown and shows about one departure flight per day on its screen.
That data tells you the airport is a serious runway, but the current advisory tells you the operating environment is not normal. Before buying or boarding, check the airline, airport status, insurer, host and hotel. Keep daylight margins, a named pickup, a backup hotel phone, offline documents and extra cash. Do not assume that a valid ticket means conditions on the ground are stable.
