Yichang is a transport hub with a special job: it is not only a Hubei city with an airport and high-speed railway station, but also one of the main gateways for Three Gorges Dam visits and Yangtze River cruises. A useful Yichang Transport Hub plan therefore has to connect flights, rail, coaches, city buses, taxis and cruise shuttles. The first question is rarely just “how do I get downtown?” It is usually “am I going to Yichang East Railway Station, the city centre, Three Gorges Tourist Center, Maoping / Zigui cruise pier, Three Gorges Dam, or a normal hotel?”
The main airport is Yichang Sanxia Airport (YIH / ZHYC), in Xiaoting District, about 26 km from the city centre and about 55 km from the Three Gorges Dam area. The main rail hub is Yichang East Railway Station in Wujiagang District, not the older Yichang Railway Station. Yichang East is the high-speed rail station most visitors will use for Wuhan, Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing, Chengdu, Xi’an and other major routes. Coach and cruise planning then depends on the exact next destination: city long-distance bus stations, Three Gorges Tourist Center, New Century Port, Maoping Pier or local sightseeing points.
The city is easy if you anchor the first day correctly. Airport-to-station is a short transfer compared with airport-to-cruise-pier. Station-to-downtown is a normal taxi or bus ride. Station-to-Three-Gorges-Dam is a regional transfer. Cruise passengers need to read the cruise company’s shuttle rules because many upstream cruises no longer board in the old city centre; the practical transfer may involve Yichang Tourist Center, Maoping Pier and timed coach windows.

Arrival Strategy
For airport arrivals, choose the first transfer by the next fixed appointment. If the only job is reaching a city hotel, the airport shuttle can be good value at CNY 20 when the hotel is near Passenger Transport Center, Wuyi Square, Long-distance Bus Station, Imperial Court Hotel or a stop where a short taxi completes the trip. If the next appointment is a train from Yichang East, a taxi is often simpler because the station is relatively close to the airport.
For cruise arrivals or departures, do not treat “Yichang port” as one place. Travel pages and cruise operators may refer to Yichang Tourist Center, New Century Port, Maoping Pier, Zigui Port or other boarding logistics. Upstream cruises from Yichang to Chongqing often use a timed coach transfer from Yichang Tourist Center or Yichang East Railway Station toward Maoping Pier. If the cruise company offers a complimentary shuttle, the pickup window and passport check matter as much as the distance.
For rail arrivals, Yichang East Railway Station is the main visitor station. It is not in the old city centre, but it is well connected by taxi, bus and cruise shuttles. If you arrive by train and board an upstream cruise the same evening, check whether your cruise company has a shuttle counter or tourism information point by the station exit. Yangtze.com notes a cruise shuttle process from the train station area to Maoping Pier during a 16:00-20:00 window, with passport needed for the coach ticket.
For a Three Gorges Dam visit, the transfer can be slower than the map suggests. The dam, Maoping / Zigui cruise logistics and some scenic areas sit west or northwest of the urban station/airport corridor. A taxi from Yichang East to Three Gorges Dam is benchmarked around RMB 102 and about one hour by ChinaAirlineTravel, while airport-to-dam is benchmarked around CNY 120 by TravelChinaGuide. Public options exist but may require multiple buses or tourist-center transfers.
Yichang Sanxia Airport
Yichang Sanxia Airport is the city’s aviation gateway. TravelChinaGuide lists it in Xiaoting District, around 16 miles / 26 km from the city centre and 34 miles / 55 km from Three Gorges Dam. It describes the terminal as a two-floor building with domestic and international functions, self-service check-in, and check-in available from 5 hours before scheduled flight time until 35 minutes before departure.
The airport shuttle is the low-cost public link. TravelChinaGuide lists the route as Sanxia Airport – Passenger Transport Center – Licheng Hotel (Wuyi Square branch) – Long-distance Bus Station – Imperial Court Hotel. The fare is CNY 20 and service hours follow flight schedules. For travellers heading into the city centre or to a hotel near Wuyi Square / long-distance-bus corridor, this is the first option to check.
Taxi benchmarks are useful because Yichang is spread across airport, station, city and river logistics. TravelChinaGuide lists airport-to-Yichang Railway Station at CNY 70-80 and 35-40 minutes, airport-to-Yichang East Railway Station at CNY 50-60 and 25 minutes, airport-to-Three Gorges Dam at CNY 120 and about 60 minutes, and airport-to-New Century Port at CNY 100 and 40-50 minutes. These are planning references, not fixed fares; route, night pricing, traffic and tolls can change the meter.
For cruise passengers arriving by air, Yangtze.com says passengers on some upstream cruises can take the CNY 20 airport shuttle or a taxi to Yichang Sanxia Tourist Center, then use a cruise shuttle to Maoping Pier during the 16:00-20:00 window. That means a late flight can break the free-shuttle plan even if the airport is “close enough” to the city. Confirm the cruise transfer cutoff before choosing a flight.
The airport also has practical passenger services. TravelChinaGuide lists enquiry hotlines, left luggage at the arrival-hall exit, baggage packing, porter service, a train-ticket window, free Wi-Fi, ATMs, medical center and lounge services. Save the airport contact page or the airport hotline if your plan depends on a same-day train or cruise transfer.
Rail Stations
Yichang East Railway Station is the main station. ChinaAirlineTravel lists it at No.1 Dongzhan Road, Wujiagang District, about 11 km southeast of downtown, 47 km southeast of Three Gorges Dam, 22 km southeast of Yichang New Century Port and 11 km northwest of Yichang Airport. It opened in 2012 and handles the key high-speed and bullet-train services.
The station layout is simple but important. ChinaAirlineTravel describes platforms on 3F, entrance / ticket office / waiting lounge / arrivals / exits / taxi drop-off areas on 2F, and taxi areas, parking, bus station and food on 1F. The taxi pickup area is on the station square. If someone is meeting you, agree on station square, exit side, shuttle-bus centre or tourism-information point rather than just “East Station”.
Yichang East has useful taxi benchmarks. ChinaAirlineTravel gives about RMB 23 and 30 minutes to downtown, RMB 50 and 35 minutes to New Century Port, and RMB 102 / 47 km / one hour to Three Gorges Dam. These numbers are especially useful for cruise travellers deciding whether a hotel near the station, the tourist centre or the pier side is worth it.
The older Yichang Railway Station on Dongshan Road is less important for most visitors. TravelChinaGuide says it is usually used for freight and may handle passenger pressure only at peak times, while Yichang East operates most trains. Do not book a hotel around the old station unless your ticket or local plan specifically names that station.
For rail booking, use China Railway 12306 where possible. Passport travellers should leave time for real-name ID checks and station security. If the onward journey is a cruise, do not schedule the train arrival too close to the shuttle window; station exit, luggage, tourism information counter and coach boarding all take time.
Coach, City Bus and Cruise Transfers
Yichang has several coach nodes. TravelChinaGuide names Yichang Long-distance Bus Station, Dagongqiao Bus Station and Haitong Bus Station. It describes the Long-distance Bus Station as the largest, with routes toward neighbouring cities and longer routes such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xi’an and Zhengzhou, and it mentions Shiyan / Shennongjia departures. Dagongqiao Bus Station serves routes toward Chongqing and provinces such as Sichuan, Zhejiang, Henan and Hunan. Haitong Bus Station handles suburban and Shennongjia-related routes.
Yichang East also has bus and passenger-transport facilities. TravelChinaGuide says the east and west squares of Yichang East have city-bus, taxi and long-distance-coach options. ChinaAirlineTravel lists station-square bus routes including No.1, No.5, BRT9 and BRT68. For city movement, TravelChinaGuide describes ordinary city buses at CNY 1 and air-conditioned buses at CNY 2; route No.10 is useful for visitor movement toward Sanyou Caves, while No.8 links the Third Wharf and Gezhouba Hydropower Station.
Cruise transfers need special attention. Yangtze.com says upstream cruise passengers arriving at Yichang East can obtain a coach ticket at the Yichang Tourism Information Center by the station exit, then walk to the “Luxury Cruises Shuttle Bus Center” for Maoping Pier; the coach transfer takes about 1.5-2 hours and runs daily between 16:00 and 20:00. For downstream cruise passengers, transfer may finish at Yichang Tourist Center after the Three Gorges Dam excursion, with taxi or bus onward to Yichang East.
For Yichang Tourist Center to Yichang East, Yangtze.com gives a taxi benchmark of about 30 minutes and RMB 20, or a B1 bus option via No.10 Middle School with about 45 minutes to the terminal at Yichang East. Those small details matter when booking a train after a cruise. A passenger who arrives at the tourist centre at 13:30 can plan differently from a passenger whose ship or shuttle is delayed until late afternoon.
Taxis, DiDi and Fare Planning
Yichang taxis are practical and usually the simplest way to bridge the gap between airport, station, hotel, tourist centre and piers. TravelChinaGuide’s city taxi table gives a daytime start rate of CNY 6 for the first 2 km, CNY 1.4/km from 2-8 km, and CNY 2.1/km beyond 8 km. At night, from 23:00 to 05:00, the start remains CNY 6 but the distance rates rise to CNY 2/km from 2-8 km and CNY 3/km beyond 8 km. Waiting is free for the first 5 minutes, then charged in units based on the per-kilometre price.
Use those rules as a sense-check. A short city ride should not cost like a dam transfer. A station-to-downtown ride around RMB 23 is plausible; station-to-New Century Port around RMB 50 is a different transfer; airport-to-dam around CNY 120 is a regional trip. TravelChinaGuide also notes that tolls are paid by the passenger and that for far destinations, negotiating a reasonable price before boarding may be needed if the driver will not use the meter.
DiDi is the main app-based ride option to check in China. It is useful in Yichang because Chinese place names matter: 宜昌三峡机场 for Yichang Sanxia Airport, 宜昌东站 for Yichang East Railway Station, 三峡游客中心 for Three Gorges Tourist Center, 茅坪港 for Maoping Port, 秭归港 for Zigui Port, and 三峡大坝 for Three Gorges Dam. Set up the app before arrival and keep the official taxi rank as backup.
For cruise-day transfers, ask the cruise operator before relying on ride-hailing. Some ports and shuttle points have specific boarding procedures, luggage handling and passport checks. A ride to the wrong “Yichang port” can waste more time than the fare saves.
Best Areas to Stay
Yichang East / Wujiagang is the best base for train-heavy and quick-transfer stays. It works for late train arrivals, early high-speed departures, airport-to-rail connections and travellers who want predictable access to station buses, taxis and some cruise shuttle processes.
City centre / Yiling Square / Wuyi Square works for normal sightseeing, food and city bus access. This base is useful when the airport shuttle stop fits, or when the next day is flexible enough for taxi or bus transfer to the station, tourist centre or long-distance bus station.
Three Gorges Tourist Center / riverfront side is the best base for cruise logistics and some Yangtze sightseeing. Choose it when the next fixed appointment is a cruise shuttle, tourist-center check-in or river activity rather than a train.
Dam / Maoping / Zigui side is specialist territory. Stay there only if the itinerary is built around cruise boarding, dam visits or west-side scenic areas. It is not a good default for a simple city night because it can add long transfers to airport and rail.
Airport / Xiaoting is useful only for late arrivals, early flights or airport-area business. For most travellers, the airport is close enough by taxi that a city or station hotel gives better access to food, trains, buses and cruise transfers.
First-Day Plans
| Traveller type | Best first move |
|---|---|
| Daytime flight, city hotel | Check the CNY 20 airport shuttle route; use taxi or DiDi if the hotel is not near a listed stop |
| Flight to Yichang East train | Taxi is usually simplest; budget around CNY 50-60 / 25 minutes from airport references |
| Train arrival, city stay | Use station-square taxi or city buses; station-to-downtown benchmark is around RMB 23 |
| Train arrival, upstream cruise | Check the cruise shuttle counter / tourism information point and the 16:00-20:00 Maoping shuttle window before leaving the station |
| Cruise disembarkation to train | Confirm whether the cruise ends at Maoping, Zigui or Yichang Tourist Center; leave margin before booking Yichang East departure |
| Three Gorges Dam visit | Compare arranged tour, private car, taxi and public bus combinations; dam transfers are not ordinary downtown trips |
| Shennongjia or regional coach | Confirm whether the bus leaves from Long-distance Bus Station, Dagongqiao, Haitong or another named terminal |
Practical Checklist
- Confirm whether the flight ticket says YIH and whether the hotel is near the airport shuttle route.
- If taking a Yangtze cruise, confirm the exact boarding or disembarkation point: Yichang Tourist Center, New Century Port, Maoping Pier, Zigui Port or another operator-named point.
- For Yichang East Railway Station, agree on station square, tourism information counter, shuttle-bus center or taxi pickup, not just “the station”.
- Use 12306 for live rail schedules and leave margin for passport ID checks.
- Save Chinese names for Yichang Sanxia Airport, Yichang East Railway Station, Three Gorges Tourist Center, Maoping Port and Three Gorges Dam.
- Use the CNY 6 start fare and distance bands to sense-check taxis, but expect higher costs for airport, dam and port transfers.
- Do not book a tight same-day flight-train-cruise chain unless the cruise operator confirms the shuttle timing.

Yichang Transport Hub FAQ
What is the main airport for Yichang?
The main airport is Yichang Sanxia Airport (YIH / ZHYC), in Xiaoting District about 26 km from the city centre. It has a CNY 20 shuttle into the city and taxi benchmarks to Yichang East Railway Station, downtown, Three Gorges Dam and port areas.
Which railway station should I use in Yichang?
Use Yichang East Railway Station for most passenger rail trips. It is the main high-speed rail station, located at No.1 Dongzhan Road in Wujiagang District. The older Yichang Railway Station is not the normal station for most visitor itineraries.
How much is a taxi from Yichang airport to Yichang East Railway Station?
TravelChinaGuide gives a reference fare of CNY 50-60 and about 25 minutes from Yichang Sanxia Airport to Yichang East Railway Station. Use the meter or app estimate because traffic, night rates and route choice can change the final fare.
How should cruise passengers plan Yichang transfers?
Cruise passengers should confirm the exact point: Yichang Tourist Center, Maoping Pier, Zigui Port, New Century Port or another operator-named location. Some cruise shuttles from Yichang East or Yichang Tourist Center operate only in set windows, so the timing matters as much as the fare.
Where should I stay for easy Yichang transport?
Stay near Yichang East / Wujiagang for rail and quick transfers, city centre / Yiling Square / Wuyi Square for ordinary sightseeing, Three Gorges Tourist Center / riverfront for cruise logistics, or Maoping / Zigui only when the itinerary is built around cruise boarding or dam-area travel.
