Zhenjiang Transport Hub

Zhenjiang is a rail-first transport hub on the Yangtze River in Jiangsu. The city does not work like a destination with one obvious airport and one simple downtown terminal. Most visitors choose between three airport strategies: Yangzhou Taizhou International Airport for the shortest scheduled airport coach into Zhenjiang South, Nanjing Lukou International Airport for a larger flight network and a direct intercity airport coach, or Changzhou Benniu International Airport when its flight schedule is the best match.

For city logistics, the most important choice is between Zhenjiang Railway Station and Zhenjiang South Railway Station. Zhenjiang Railway Station is the central station at No. 73 Zhongshanxi Road in Runzhou District, close to Wanda Plaza, the main coach station, city buses and many practical hotels. Zhenjiang South Railway Station is the high-speed station in Dantu District, useful for Beijing-Shanghai high-speed services and for the Yangzhou Taizhou Airport shuttle.

This guide is written for the first travel day: where you land, which station you should use, where the coach station is, how much taxis can cost, which app to prepare, and where to stay so the next transfer is simple.

Arrival Strategy

The cleanest Zhenjiang arrival is usually rail first, flight second. If you can fly into Shanghai, Nanjing, Changzhou or Yangzhou and connect by high-speed train, Zhenjiang Railway Station or Zhenjiang South Railway Station may be the least stressful final arrival point. If you must fly directly into a regional airport, look at the airport coach before committing to a taxi.

Use this decision order:

  1. If your flight lands at Yangzhou Taizhou International Airport and the airport shuttle matches your time, use the shuttle to Zhenjiang South Railway Station. It is direct, scheduled and normally cheaper than a private car.
  2. If your flight lands at Nanjing Lukou International Airport, compare the direct Zhenjiang airport coach with rail via Nanjing South. The coach is better with luggage when the timetable works; rail is better if you want more departure flexibility.
  3. If your flight lands at Changzhou Benniu International Airport, use the Changzhou airport shuttle into Changzhou Railway Station, then take rail onward to Zhenjiang, or take a taxi/DiDi if the arrival is late or luggage-heavy.
  4. If you arrive by train, decide which Zhenjiang station is closer to your hotel before booking. The two stations are roughly 7 km apart, but using the wrong one can add an unnecessary taxi ride.

For a first visit, the Runzhou / central station side is usually the most forgiving base. It gives you the main rail station, coach hub, Wanda Plaza area, Xijin Ferry access, Jinshan access and easier taxis in one compact zone.

Airport Choices

Yangzhou Taizhou International Airport (YTY)

Yangzhou Taizhou International Airport is often the most convenient regional airport for Zhenjiang when its flight timetable is suitable. The key reason is the direct airport shuttle to Zhenjiang South Railway Station. Published travel guidance lists airport to Zhenjiang South departures at 09:00, 10:30, 11:00, 12:30 and 14:30, with Zhenjiang South to the airport at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00 and 18:00. The listed travel time is about 1 hour and the fare is CNY 50.

Use YTY when:

  • your flight arrives before the afternoon shuttle gap becomes a problem;
  • your hotel is near Zhenjiang South, Dantu or the south side of the city;
  • you want a predictable coach fare instead of a cross-city taxi;
  • you are travelling light enough to handle the station arrival.

Taxi planning from YTY to central Zhenjiang is different. The airport is across the Yangtze River from Zhenjiang and a road transfer can be around 80 km depending on the destination and bridge route. Using the Zhenjiang taxi tariff as a sense-check, a long cross-city ride can easily move into the CNY 240-320 range before waiting, tolls, night rules or app surge. A pre-booked car may quote more, but it gives a fixed pickup and less language friction.

Nanjing Lukou International Airport (NKG)

Nanjing Lukou is the larger and more flexible flight gateway. It is farther from Zhenjiang than YTY, but it has more flights and a direct intercity airport coach. Published airport transport guidance lists a Nanjing Lukou to Zhenjiang coach to Zhenjiang City Terminal at the South Square of the new railway station, with airport departures at 10:30, 12:00, 13:30, 14:35, 15:30, 16:30, 18:05, 19:30, 21:00 and 22:00. The return Zhenjiang to airport times are listed as 05:30, 07:00, 08:00, 09:30, 11:00, 12:30, 14:00, 15:30, 17:00 and 18:30. The listed duration is about 1 hour 30 minutes and the fare is CNY 60.

NKG is the practical choice when:

  • international or long domestic flight choice matters more than the shortest transfer;
  • you arrive at a time covered by the airport coach;
  • you prefer a direct coach to changing trains with luggage;
  • your final hotel is near Zhenjiang Railway Station or the South Square area.

If the direct coach is not convenient, use airport transport to Nanjing South Railway Station and continue by high-speed rail to Zhenjiang South or Zhenjiang Railway Station, depending on the train. This can be faster than waiting several hours for the next coach, but it adds station navigation and ticketing.

A taxi or DiDi from NKG to Zhenjiang is a long intercity ride. Use it mainly for late arrivals, families, heavy bags or a hotel that is awkward from the coach stop. A reasonable planning range is about CNY 260-380 before unusual waiting, toll, night or holiday effects. Always compare the in-app quote with the coach fare before accepting.

Changzhou Benniu International Airport (CZX)

Changzhou Benniu can be the closest useful airport by road for some Zhenjiang trips, but it is not automatically the easiest. The airport has a shuttle into Changzhou city. Published guidance lists the airport shuttle pickup outside Gate 2 of the arrivals hall on the ground floor, with a route to Tongjiang Road Airport Terminal and Changzhou Railway Station. The listed fare is CNY 20 and the travel time to Changzhou Railway Station is about 60 minutes. From Changzhou Railway Station, continue by rail to Zhenjiang.

CZX works best when:

  • the fare or flight time is much better than YTY or NKG;
  • you are comfortable using a Changzhou rail connection;
  • you arrive early enough to avoid a late-night transfer chain;
  • you have a hotel near Zhenjiang Railway Station, making the final rail arrival simple.

A direct CZX to Zhenjiang taxi can be fast because the road distance is shorter than NKG or YTY for many central destinations. Still, it is an intercity airport trip, so plan for roughly CNY 150-230 depending on pickup, drop-off, tolls, waiting and app quote. If the driver is not comfortable with the cross-city route, book through DiDi or a private transfer desk rather than negotiating at the curb.

Rail Stations

Zhenjiang Railway Station

Zhenjiang Railway Station is the main everyday rail anchor for most visitors. The station address is No. 73 Zhongshanxi Road, Runzhou District, Zhenjiang. It sits in the central west side of the city, close to Wanda Plaza, hotels, the coach station and many bus routes. Travel guidance lists bus access from the South Square and North Square, with the South Square served by routes including 18, 28, 36, 40, 42/K42, 53, 73, 81, 82, 91, 96, 212, 221/K221 and 226, and the North Square by routes including 2, 3, 4, 24, 32, 86 and 302.

Use Zhenjiang Railway Station for:

  • short stays where you want the easiest hotel logistics;
  • Shanghai-Nanjing corridor trips when a suitable train stops here;
  • local bus connections to Xijin Ferry, Jinshan and central districts;
  • direct or nearby coach station access.

The station is also useful for the Nanjing Lukou airport coach. Published guidance places the Zhenjiang airport coach around the South Square area and lists a CNY 55 airport bus to Nanjing Lukou from Zhenjiang Railway Station, taking about 1.5 hours. Because different sources list CNY 55 or CNY 60 depending on station, direction and update date, treat CNY 55-60 as the planning range and check the ticket counter or airport coach page on the travel day.

Zhenjiang South Railway Station

Zhenjiang South Railway Station is the high-speed station on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed line. Travel guidance places it on North Zhanqian Road in Dantu District, about 10 km from the city center, about 6-7 km from Zhenjiang Railway Station and about 80 km from Nanjing Lukou International Airport. It is the right station when your train is a Beijing-Shanghai high-speed service or when your airport transfer is the YTY shuttle.

Published station information lists routes including 39, 85, 100, 131, 202/K202 and 208/K208 at Zhenjiang South Railway Station, with additional nearby stops such as Zaolin Road South and Wuzhoushan Road West. The two Zhenjiang rail stations are close enough that a taxi can solve mistakes: guidance for the station-to-station taxi is about 15 minutes and around CNY 15, though current traffic and tariff rules can move that upward.

Choose a hotel near Zhenjiang South only when your next move depends on it: early high-speed train, late YTY airport shuttle arrival, Dantu-area work, or a simple overnight before leaving again. For sightseeing, the central station side is usually easier.

Coach and Intercity Buses

Zhenjiang Passenger Transport Center, also known in English searches as Zhenjiang Coach Station or Zhenjiang Bus Passenger Transport Center, is the main coach hub to check first. Local station listings place it on Huangshan West Road in Runzhou District, opposite Wanda Plaza, with contact numbers 0511-85232762 and 0511-85229695. Map listings also identify Zhenjiang Coach Station at No. 18 Huangshan West Road, Runzhou District, opposite the Wanda Plaza office buildings.

For travellers, the important point is not just the address. The coach station is close to Zhenjiang Railway Station, which makes the Runzhou / Wanda / Zhongshanxi Road zone a practical transport base. If you arrive by rail and need a regional bus to Danyang, Yangzhong, Jurong or nearby counties, check this station before looking for smaller suburban stops.

Zhenjiang South has its own long-distance bus function nearby. Chinese rail-station descriptions note Nanxu coach services near Zhenjiang South for routes such as Yangzhong, Yangzhou, Gaoyou and Jiangdu. Use that only when your route is clearly tied to the south station. Otherwise, start with the central coach station near Huangshan West Road.

For airport coaches, do not assume they depart from the ordinary coach station. NKG guidance points to a Zhenjiang City Terminal / South Square rail-station area. YTY guidance points to Zhenjiang South Railway Station. Save the exact Chinese stop name before travel:

Airport route Zhenjiang-side stop to check Planning fare
Yangzhou Taizhou Airport Zhenjiang South Railway Station CNY 50
Nanjing Lukou Airport Zhenjiang City Terminal / South Square of the new railway station CNY 55-60
Changzhou Benniu Airport No direct Zhenjiang airport coach found in current public guidance; connect via Changzhou Railway Station CNY 20 airport shuttle to Changzhou Railway Station, then rail onward

Local Buses

Zhenjiang local buses are useful for the rail station, Wanda Plaza, Jiangsu University, Xijin Ferry, Jinshan, Beigushan and other city stops. Jiangsu University transport guidance describes a broad downtown bus network and says many buses use integrated ticketing with fares ranging from CNY 1 to CNY 2. Some regional city-county buses cost more: Jiangsu reporting on Zhenjiang to Jurong, Yangzhong and Danyang services lists whole-route fares of CNY 4-5 for those longer links.

For a visitor, the key bus rules are simple:

  • prepare small cash in case a bus does not accept your foreign card setup;
  • expect many routes to be self-service, with no change given;
  • use Alipay, WeChat, UnionPay QR or local bus app options only after they are working on your phone;
  • check the last bus time if returning from Jinshan, Xijin Ferry or a university-area hotel at night;
  • for rail departures, use taxi or DiDi if you cannot clearly confirm the bus direction.

On a short stay, buses are excellent for daytime sightseeing but less ideal for airport transfers, early trains or trips with large luggage.

Taxis and DiDi

Zhenjiang taxis are the backup that makes the transport system usable. They are especially valuable between the two rail stations, from the central station to Xijin Ferry or Jinshan, late at night, and for hotels away from major bus corridors.

The city taxi tariff published in Jiangsu reporting sets ordinary taxis at CNY 10 for the first 3 km and new-energy taxis at CNY 11 for the first 3 km. From 3 km to 16 km, the reference fare is CNY 2.7 per km; beyond 16 km it is CNY 3 per km. Slow traffic below 12 km/h after the grace period is charged by time-distance rules. A night service fee applies from 22:00 to 05:00 on the distance beyond the base fare, and Spring Festival / National Day holiday floating charges can add up to CNY 5 per trip.

Use those numbers as a sense-check:

Trip Practical range Notes
Zhenjiang Railway Station to Zhenjiang South About CNY 15-30 Published guidance gives about 15 minutes and CNY 15, but allow more in traffic
Zhenjiang Railway Station to Xijin Ferry or Jinshan About CNY 10-35 Short city rides; ask for meter or use app
Yangzhou Taizhou Airport to central Zhenjiang About CNY 240-320 Long bridge/intercity ride; tolls and app quote matter
Nanjing Lukou Airport to central Zhenjiang About CNY 260-380 Compare with CNY 55-60 coach first
Changzhou Benniu Airport to central Zhenjiang About CNY 150-230 Usually shorter by road, but still confirm cross-city acceptance

DiDi is the most practical ride-hailing option for mainland China. Its app store listing says inbound users can use an English interface, global mobile number login, bilingual communication with drivers and multiple payment options including international bank cards. For Zhenjiang, set up DiDi before arrival, save your hotel in Chinese, and screenshot the hotel address. At rail stations, move to the signed app pickup or taxi area instead of standing in a random curb lane.

For airport rides, do not bargain with unofficial drivers. Use the airport taxi rank, DiDi, a hotel-arranged transfer or a private transfer booked with a written price. For long rides from NKG, YTY or CZX, the fixed app quote is more useful than a verbal estimate.

Best Areas to Stay

Zhenjiang Railway Station / Wanda / Huangshan West Road

This is the best default area for transport-first visitors. You are close to Zhenjiang Railway Station, the main coach station, city buses, taxi supply and practical shops. It is also a good base if you need the Nanjing Lukou airport coach or a morning train. Choose this area for one-night stays, business trips, onward coaches and first visits where convenience matters more than views.

Xijin Ferry / Jinshan / Old City Side

This area is better for sightseeing atmosphere. It works well if you arrive during the day and do not need an early airport transfer. Check vehicle access carefully because some historic streets are better for walking than for luggage drop-off. For an early train, book a taxi or DiDi the night before.

Zhenjiang South / Dantu

Stay near Zhenjiang South Railway Station if your route depends on high-speed rail, the YTY airport shuttle or Dantu-area meetings. It is not the most atmospheric base for a first tourist stay, but it removes stress from early trains and airport-coach departures.

Jiangsu University / East Side

This can work for university visits or longer stays, with many bus routes into town. It is less ideal for airport transfers because you may need a taxi to the correct station first. Save the Chinese campus gate or hotel address for DiDi, because university-area pickup points can be confusing.

Airport Hotels

Do not book an airport hotel unless your next flight is from that airport. A hotel near NKG, YTY or CZX can make sense for a very early flight, but it puts you outside Zhenjiang and can make sightseeing inefficient. For most visitors, a rail-station hotel plus a morning coach or train is a better balance.

First-Time Checklist

  1. Confirm the airport code on your ticket: YTY, NKG or CZX.
  2. If using YTY, check the Zhenjiang South airport shuttle time before booking the flight.
  3. If using NKG, compare the direct coach with rail via Nanjing South.
  4. If using CZX, plan the Changzhou Railway Station link unless booking a car.
  5. Choose the correct Zhenjiang rail station before buying train tickets.
  6. Save hotel names in Chinese for taxi and DiDi.
  7. Carry a small cash backup for buses and short taxi problems.
  8. Use CNY 10/3 km plus per-km taxi rules to sense-check city rides.
  9. Add tolls, waiting, night and holiday charges to airport taxi expectations.
  10. Stay near Zhenjiang Railway Station unless a specific high-speed rail or airport shuttle reason points elsewhere.
