Maputo Transport Hub

Maputo Transport Hub: MPM Airport, CFM Station, Taxis

Maputo is Mozambique’s main international gateway and a very practical city for first-arrival decisions. A useful Maputo Transport Hub guide has to explain Maputo Airport (MPM/FQMA), Maputo Central Railway Station at Praça dos Trabalhadores, the reality of chapas and informal minibus routes, ride-hailing through Yango and local taxi services such as Viva Taxi, the Catembe ferry / KaTembe crossing logic, and road movement toward Matola, Costa do Sol, Marracuene, Boane, Namaacha, Ressano Garcia / South Africa corridor and Ponta do Ouro.

The old generic way to write Maputo is to say “airport, train station, buses and taxis” and stop there. That is not enough. The airport is close to the city, but the best transfer is usually taxi, ride-hailing or a pre-arranged driver rather than a simple airport bus. The railway station is important, but many visitor trips are still by road, chapa, coach, private car or ferry. The city also has different transfer zones: Baixa and Polana are not the same as Matola, Costa do Sol, Catembe or a beach-resort road trip.

The city coordinate anchor used here is -25.965530, 32.583220. OurAirports lists Maputo Airport as a large_airport with IATA MPM, ICAO FQMA, scheduled service marked yes, and coordinates -25.920799, 32.572601. The article-set airport match places MPM about 5.1 km north of Maputo by direct geographic distance. OSRM sampled routing from MPM to Maputo Central Railway Station returned about 6.4 km / 9 minutes in clear road conditions, and MPM to Baixa also sampled at about 6.4 km / 9 minutes.

Arrival Strategy

If you land at MPM, keep the first transfer simple. The airport is close enough that a taxi, Yango/Viva-style ride, hotel pickup or private driver can be efficient. A low-cost route using chapas may be possible for experienced travellers, but it is not the best first-arrival plan with luggage, at night or without local route knowledge.

If you are staying in Baixa, Polana, Sommerschield or near the railway station, the transfer is short. If you are going to Costa do Sol, Matola, Catembe/KaTembe, a conference venue, an embassy area or a beach road trip, price that as a different journey. The airport distance on the map does not capture the last-mile complexity.

If Maputo is the start of an onward trip, decide whether the next leg is rail, long-distance coach, chapa, ferry/bridge or private road transfer. For South Africa-side movement, Ressano Garcia / Komatipoort logic is very different from a city taxi. For Ponta do Ouro and southern beach routes, the KaTembe bridge has changed road planning, but a private/shuttle plan is still usually cleaner than improvising after landing.

Airport: Maputo Airport MPM/FQMA

Maputo Airport (MPM/FQMA) is the main international airport for the city. OurAirports lists it as a large_airport with scheduled service marked yes, IATA MPM, ICAO FQMA, coordinates -25.920799, 32.572601, and municipality Maputo. Nominatim maps the airport as Aeroporto Internacional de Maputo in the George Dimitrov / KaMubukwana side of the city.

The airport is close to the centre by road. OSRM sampled routing returned about 6.4 km / 9 minutes from MPM to Maputo Central Railway Station and about 6.4 km / 9 minutes to Baixa. The airport to Costa do Sol sampled at about 10.9 km / 23 minutes, and the airport to Matola at about 15.9 km / 18 minutes.

Those times are clear-road anchors, not promises. Airport pickup, security, traffic, rain, event traffic, roadworks and exact hotel gate can change the experience. For late arrivals, the safest plan is a pre-arranged driver, hotel transfer or app ride with a backup.

Airport Transfers: Taxi, Yango, Viva Taxi and Drivers

For MPM to Baixa, Polana, Sommerschield or the central hotel zone, a practical planning band is MZN 250-700+ for app/taxi-style movement, with airport-rank or pre-arranged transfers sometimes higher. Some travellers report low app quotes, while airport taxis and hotel cars can cost more. The useful planning rule is to compare live app pricing with a hotel/driver quote before arrival.

Yango is commonly discussed as a Maputo ride-hailing option, and Viva Taxi is a local taxi-app/service option. Both can be useful, but do not make the whole arrival depend on one app. Have the hotel address, WhatsApp/phone contact, cash in MZN, and a fallback driver or official taxi rank plan.

For Costa do Sol, Matola, Catembe/KaTembe, embassy areas or a villa address, ask for the full destination price. A ride that looks cheap to Baixa may not be the same product when the drop-off is outside the central grid or across the bridge.

Rail: Maputo Central Railway Station and CFM

Maputo Central Railway Station is both a landmark and a real transport anchor. Nominatim maps it at Praça dos Trabalhadores, coordinates -25.970843, 32.564161. It is the CFM rail station most visitors recognize, close to Baixa and useful for orientation even if a particular long-distance plan ends up being by road.

Rail in Maputo should be treated carefully. Some services are commuter/regional and schedule-dependent; not every tourist route is simple by train. For South Africa-side planning, rail history and cross-border corridors exist, but ordinary travellers should check current CFM/operator schedules and practical alternatives before relying on a train.

The station is very close to important city movement points. OSRM sampled routing from Maputo Central Railway Station to the Catembe ferry ticket office returned about 2.0 km / 4 minutes, to Costa do Sol about 16.3 km / 28 minutes, and to Matola about 15.4 km / 16 minutes in clear road conditions.

Buses, Chapas and Long-Distance Road Travel

Maputo’s everyday low-cost mobility is built around chapas, local buses and informal route knowledge. They are cheap and widely used, but they are not always easy for a first-time visitor with luggage. Maputo chapa fares have been publicly reported in bands around MZN 15-25+ on Greater Maputo routes after past fare changes, but current exact prices should be checked locally before travel.

Long-distance road travel often uses bus company offices, informal pickup areas, hotel shuttles or operator-specific points rather than one neat universal terminal. The Junta area is often discussed as an informal long-distance minibus/bus area, but because map anchors and operating points can shift, it is better to confirm the exact pickup with the operator or local host.

For intercity trips such as Tofo/Inhambane, Xai-Xai, Chimoio, Vilankulo, South Africa corridors or eSwatini-side movement, buy by operator and departure point. Do not assume a short city taxi can solve a missed long-distance bus; early departure times and exact pickup locations matter.

Catembe Ferry, KaTembe Bridge and Bay Crossings

The Catembe ferry and Maputo-KaTembe bridge are two different planning tools. The ferry is useful for pedestrians, local bay movement and some Catembe/Inhaca-side plans. Nominatim maps the ferry ticket office as Bilheteira de barcos para Catembe e Inhaca on Avenida 10 de Novembro, coordinates -25.978614, 32.574569.

The bridge is the road solution for many southbound trips, including Catembe, Ponta do Ouro and the road network toward the southern coast. For a visitor, the choice is usually not ferry versus bridge in theory; it is whether the destination is a walkable ferry-side trip, a taxi ride in Catembe, or a longer vehicle journey south.

For Inhaca and other island/ferry plans, schedules and classes can change. Buy tickets at the current counter or through the current operator information rather than relying on a stale blog schedule.

Matola, Costa do Sol and Regional Routes

Maputo is not only Baixa. Matola is a major nearby city and industrial/residential area west of Maputo. OSRM sampled routing from the central station to Matola returned about 15.4 km / 16 minutes, while MPM airport to Matola sampled at about 15.9 km / 18 minutes.

Costa do Sol is a north-east/coastal direction. OSRM sampled routing from the airport returned about 10.9 km / 23 minutes, and from the central station about 16.3 km / 28 minutes. For restaurants or beach-side addresses, a ride-hailing app or taxi is usually simpler than trying to decode a chapa on arrival.

For regional road movement, sampled routing from the central station returned about 43.3 km / 43 minutes to Marracuene, 25.6 km / 26 minutes to Boane, 48.0 km / 53 minutes to Namaacha, and 118.9 km / 103 minutes to Ponta do Ouro. Those routes need destination-specific planning, especially for beach luggage, border timing and return transport.

MZN Fare Planning

These MZN ranges are practical planning figures, not legal tariffs. Use live app quotes, hotel transfers, taxi-rank quotes, operator counters and local advice for current exact prices.

Ride or ticket Practical planning range Notes
MPM airport to Baixa / central hotel MZN 250-700+ App rides can be lower; airport taxis/hotel cars can be higher
MPM airport to Costa do Sol MZN 350-900+ Longer urban route; traffic matters
MPM airport to Matola MZN 400-1000+ Price by exact Matola address
Short city taxi/app ride MZN 100-350+ Depends on app supply, traffic and time
Chapa/local minibus ride MZN 15-30+ Confirm current route fare locally
Central station to Catembe ferry ticket office MZN 100-250+ taxi/app Short central ride; walking may be possible for some travellers
Maputo to Marracuene MZN 300-800+ private; cheaper by chapa/shared Route and waiting change the price
Maputo to Boane / Namaacha MZN 500-1200+ private Border/road timing can matter
Maputo to Ponta do Ouro MZN 2500-5000+ private/shuttle Long southern beach transfer; pre-book for reliability
Long-distance chapa/coach Operator fare Buy by route, company and departure point

For a solo traveller in daylight, chapas and app rides can be good value. For airport arrivals, late rides, family luggage, business meetings or beach transfers, the safer option is usually a known driver, hotel pickup or pre-booked shuttle.

Route Samples from Maputo

OSRM sampled routing gives road-distance anchors. These are not timetable promises and should be adjusted for traffic, weather, waiting, pickup point, roadworks and border or ferry timing.

Route Sampled road distance / time Use
MPM airport to Maputo Central Railway Station 6.4 km / 9 min Airport to Baixa/rail landmark
MPM airport to Baixa 6.4 km / 9 min Central hotel transfer
MPM airport to Costa do Sol 10.9 km / 23 min Coastal restaurant/hotel direction
MPM airport to Matola 15.9 km / 18 min West-side city/industrial direction
Central station to Catembe ferry ticket office 2.0 km / 4 min Bay crossing/ferry planning
Central station to Costa do Sol 16.3 km / 28 min Local coastal movement
Central station to Matola 15.4 km / 16 min Regional city transfer
Central station to Marracuene 43.3 km / 43 min North-side regional route
Central station to Boane 25.6 km / 26 min South-west regional route
Central station to Namaacha 48.0 km / 53 min Border-side road route
Central station to Ponta do Ouro 118.9 km / 103 min Southern beach transfer

Best Areas to Stay for Transport

Stay in Baixa if you want quick access to Maputo Central Railway Station, ferry ticket office, business addresses and short airport rides. It is practical for first nights and onward travel.

Stay in Polana / Sommerschield if you want hotels, restaurants, embassies and more comfortable taxi/app access. Airport transfers are still short, but check exact gate and traffic.

Stay near Costa do Sol if the coast and restaurants are the point of the trip. It is not the same as a railway-station base, so plan taxis/app rides.

Stay in Matola only if work, family or a specific address is there. It is a separate movement zone, not just “central Maputo.”

Stay in Catembe/KaTembe when the bay-side destination is the reason for travel. Confirm whether you will use ferry, bridge, taxi or arranged driver for each day.

Decision Guide

Choose taxi/app/driver from MPM when arriving for the first time, arriving late, carrying luggage or going to a hotel. The distance is short enough that reliability matters more than shaving off every metical.

Choose chapas only when you know the route, travel light and can handle informal stops. They are useful for local life but not the best first transfer from the airport.

Choose Maputo Central Railway Station as a landmark and rail anchor, but check current CFM schedules before building a whole itinerary around train service.

Choose ferry for pedestrian Catembe/Inhaca-side movement and bridge/private road transfer for southern road trips such as Ponta do Ouro.

First-Time Checklist

  1. Check the flight code: for Maputo city, it should normally be MPM.
  2. Save the hotel address and phone/WhatsApp contact before landing.
  3. Compare Yango/Viva Taxi/live app pricing with hotel pickup or airport taxi quotes.
  4. Carry small MZN notes for chapas, taxis and ferry-side movement.
  5. Use Maputo Central Railway Station as a Baixa landmark, but check CFM schedules before relying on rail.
  6. Confirm long-distance bus or chapa pickup point directly with the operator or local host.
  7. For Catembe, decide ferry versus bridge based on final destination, not only map distance.
  8. For Ponta do Ouro, Namaacha or South Africa-side travel, pre-plan border/road timing and return.
