Maputo’s everyday low-cost mobility is built around chapas, local buses and informal route knowledge. They are cheap and widely used, but they are not always easy for a first-time visitor with luggage. Maputo chapa fares have been publicly reported in bands around MZN 15-25+ on Greater Maputo routes after past fare changes, but current exact prices should be checked locally before travel.

Matola, Costa do Sol and Regional Routes

Maputo is not only Baixa. Matola is a major nearby city and industrial/residential area west of Maputo. OSRM sampled routing from the central station to Matola returned about 15.4 km / 16 minutes, while MPM airport to Matola sampled at about 15.9 km / 18 minutes.

Costa do Sol is a north-east/coastal direction. OSRM sampled routing from the airport returned about 10.9 km / 23 minutes, and from the central station about 16.3 km / 28 minutes. For restaurants or beach-side addresses, a ride-hailing app or taxi is usually simpler than trying to decode a chapa on arrival.

For regional road movement, sampled routing from the central station returned about 43.3 km / 43 minutes to Marracuene, 25.6 km / 26 minutes to Boane, 48.0 km / 53 minutes to Namaacha, and 118.9 km / 103 minutes to Ponta do Ouro. Those routes need destination-specific planning, especially for beach luggage, border timing and return transport.
