Moscow Transport Hub

Moscow is not a one-terminal city. A good Moscow transport plan starts with the airport code on the ticket, then the rail terminal or urban rail line near the hotel, then a taxi backup for late arrivals and luggage-heavy transfers. The city has four practical passenger-airport names a visitor may see: Sheremetyevo (SVO), Domodedovo (DME), Vnukovo (VKO) and Zhukovsky (ZIA). It also has a large urban rail, MCC and MCD network, several long-distance rail terminals, a central intercity bus terminal at Shchyolkovskaya, and a strong app-taxi market led by Yandex Go.

The cleanest first-day rule is simple: use Aeroexpress or urban rail-linked airport transport when the hotel is near the relevant rail terminal or urban rail line; use Yandex Go or an authorized airport taxi desk when arrival time, children, winter weather or luggage makes transfers painful. Moscow traffic can turn a short-looking road transfer into a slow trip. The urban rail and airport rail links are often more predictable, while taxis are easier door to door.

This guide gives the practical transport anchors: where the airports connect, how Troika fares work, which rail terminal matters for Saint Petersburg or the Trans-Siberian direction, where the main intercity bus terminal is, how taxi booking works, and which hotel areas reduce first-day friction.

Quick Orientation

Need Best Moscow anchor Practical detail
Broadest international airport Sheremetyevo (SVO) Aeroexpress to Belorussky / Savyolovsky side; Yandex Go desks are inside airport terminals
South-east airport Domodedovo (DME) Aeroexpress to Paveletsky; express bus 1185 to Domodedovskaya urban rail
South-west airport Vnukovo (VKO) Airport is now urban rail-linked; Aeroexpress information should be checked by date
Far south-east airport Zhukovsky (ZIA) Public route uses Otdykh rail connection plus shuttle, or bus 441 to Kotelniki urban rail
City fare tool Troika card Moscow Transport says Troika can be used on urban rail, MCC, monorail and ground transit
Rail to Saint Petersburg Leningradsky terminal Komsomolskaya / Three Terminals Square; building access can change during reconstruction
Rail to Kazan / south-east Kazansky terminal Komsomolskaya cluster
Rail to Yaroslavl / Siberia Yaroslavsky terminal Komsomolskaya cluster and classic Trans-Siberian direction
Intercity bus terminal Central road terminal Shchyolkovskoye Highway 75, urban rail Shchyolkovskaya, open 24 hours
Taxi app Yandex Go Sheremetyevo names Yandex Go as its online taxi service

Arrival Strategy

Moscow airport choice is normally decided by the airline, not by the visitor. SVO, DME and VKO can all work well if the onward connection is chosen correctly. ZIA is more specialized and usually needs more planning. Before booking a hotel, check the airport code, the first transfer, the nearest urban rail line and the next departure terminal.

For SVO, Aeroexpress and taxi are the main visitor choices. Sheremetyevo’s airport page describes Aeroexpress travel to Moscow, while its taxi pages state that Yandex Go can be ordered online and that Yandex Go booking desks are available in terminal arrival areas. This is useful for visitors who cannot set up the app immediately after landing.

For DME, Aeroexpress goes to the Paveletsky side of central Moscow, while the official Domodedovo bus page says route 1185 links the airport with Domodedovskaya urban rail, with departures every 15 minutes and an approximate travel time of 30 to 40 minutes. That bus can be a budget-friendly solution when luggage is light and the destination is on or near the green line.

For VKO, recheck the airport-transfer route close to travel date because the airport has changed with Moscow urban rail expansion and Aeroexpress service patterns. For ZIA, the airport’s own page lists public routes using Otdykh and bus 441 to Kotelniki urban rail. ZIA can be workable, but it is not the airport to choose casually if the hotel is in north or west Moscow.

Airport Transfers

Sheremetyevo SVO

Sheremetyevo is the most common Moscow airport for many international trips. The practical question is whether the destination is near the Belorussky / Savyolovsky rail corridor, the urban rail Circle line, or a hotel area that would require several transfers. Aeroexpress is predictable when the city-side terminal is convenient. Taxi is easier for door-to-door travel and for late-night hotel arrivals.

Sheremetyevo’s taxi information says passengers can order Yandex.Taxi online, and the airport service page names Yandex Go as the online taxi service for passengers and luggage. It also says booking desks are located in terminal arrival areas. Use those desks or the app rather than negotiating with drivers in arrivals. Moscow airports are large, and the driver needs the exact terminal, pickup zone and phone connection.

Domodedovo DME

Domodedovo works best for hotels on the Paveletsky, Zamoskvoretskaya or south-central side of Moscow. Aeroexpress is the simple airport-rail option. Domodedovo also has an official taxi page advising passengers to use dedicated service desks or self-service online booking kiosks in domestic and international arrival areas. The airport explicitly warns that taxi drivers are not authorized to accept bookings directly, so the safe rule is desk, kiosk or trusted app.

The cheaper public route is route 1185 to Domodedovskaya urban rail. Domodedovo’s official bus page gives a 30 to 40 minute approximate airport-to-urban rail travel time, departures every 15 minutes and service from early morning into the night. Add urban rail time after that. This route is sensible for solo travelers with small bags, less so for families after a long flight.

Vnukovo VKO

Vnukovo is the south-west airport. It can be strong for hotels around Kievsky, Moscow City, the blue-line corridor or western districts. Moscow airport information has changed over recent years because Vnukovo gained a direct urban rail connection and older Aeroexpress assumptions can be out of date. If your trip uses VKO, check the live Moscow Transport planner, the airport site and Aeroexpress before choosing hotel area.

For most visitors, VKO is a choice between urban rail, app taxi and prebooked transfer. The urban rail is efficient if the hotel is on a convenient line and luggage is manageable. Taxi is better for late arrival, children, snow, business luggage or hotels away from urban rail entrances.

Zhukovsky ZIA

Zhukovsky is farther from central Moscow and should be treated as a planned transfer. ZIA’s official public transport page lists Sputnik express train plus shuttle bus through Otdykh, and bus 441 from or to Kotelniki urban rail. If your airline uses ZIA, build more buffer than you would for SVO or VKO. A private pickup or app taxi may be worth the money if arrival is late or the hotel is not on the south-east urban rail side.

Aeroexpress And Airport Rail

Aeroexpress is the dedicated airport-rail brand visitors associate with Moscow. Its official site describes comfortable trains to Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo from Paveletsky, Belorussky and Savyolovsky rail terminals and MCC stations. The Aeroexpress ticket page says tickets are valid on routes such as Sheremetyevo to Belorussky / Odintsovo, Domodedovo to Paveletsky, and Vnukovo to Kievsky, and notes 30-minute intervals on listed services. Because the Vnukovo pattern has changed in recent years, use the live Aeroexpress page for the final decision.

Use Aeroexpress when:

Situation Why it works
Hotel is near the arrival rail terminal Less road-traffic risk
You arrive during daytime or evening Better onward urban rail connection
You travel alone with one bag Easy gate and platform movement
You must catch a timed onward train More predictable than road traffic

Use taxi or private transfer when:

Situation Why it works
Hotel is far from the city-side rail terminal Avoids multiple transfers
Arrival is late Fewer last-service worries
Group has children or heavy luggage One vehicle can be simpler
Winter weather is rough Door-to-door comfort matters

Troika, Urban Rail, MCC And MCD

Moscow’s urban network is the best way to move across the city once you are inside it. Moscow Transport’s Troika page says the travel card can be used for Moscow urban rail, monorail, Moscow Central Circle and ground transit. It also lists Moscow Transport service centers at 20/1 Staraya Basmannaya Street and 25, 1905 Goda Street, and describes Troika purchase points at urban rail cash desks, MCC locations, suburban rail stations and Mosgortrans ticket machines.

For 2026 fare planning, use rubles and check the official fare page on the day you travel. Moscow Transport’s English Troika page lists “All-in-one” ticket examples such as 90 rubles for one trip, 180 rubles for two trips, 415 rubles for one day and 800 rubles for three days. The Urban rail English information page lists January 2026 fare examples including 75 rubles with prepaid Troika for urban rail, MCC, MCD central zone, bus and tram; 83 rubles by bank card or smartphone pay; 112 rubles for a 90-minute fare; and 3460 rubles for a 30-day unlimited pass recorded on Troika.

For a visitor, the decision is not complicated:

Stay length Practical fare logic
One or two rides Single or bank-card payment can be enough
Two to four days Troika or short unlimited pass may reduce friction
One week with many rides Compare pass products against pay-as-you-go
Airport plus city Keep airport rail fare separate from ordinary city rides
Suburban MCD trip Check central vs suburban zone fare

Moscow urban rail stations can be deep, transfer corridors can be long, and rush-hour crowds can be intense. If you have a rolling suitcase, allow more time than the route planner suggests.

Long-Distance Rail Terminals

Moscow’s rail system is terminal-based. The most important visitor cluster is Komsomolskaya, often called the Three Terminals Square area because Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky and Kazansky sit next to each other. Moscow Transport’s own page identifies Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky and Kazansky as three railway stations located next to each other on Komsomolskaya Square. For an English article, describe them as rail terminals to avoid confusing the rail hub with the urban rail stop.

Komsomolskaya Cluster

Use Leningradsky for many Saint Petersburg and north-western itineraries. Use Yaroslavsky for Yaroslavl, Siberian and Far East directions. Use Kazansky for many Kazan, Ryazan, south-east and Volga-region routes. This is the most useful hotel area for rail-first travelers because three major terminals share one urban rail area.

RZD has noted reconstruction-related changes at Leningradsky in recent years, including passenger-building closure from August 2024 for reconstruction. That does not mean trains stop running, but it does mean access routes, entrances and waiting areas can change. If your ticket says Leningradsky, arrive early and follow temporary signs.

Other Rail Terminals

Moscow also has important terminals such as Paveletsky for the Domodedovo airport side and southbound rail, Kievsky for western and south-western routes, Belorussky for the Sheremetyevo side and west/north-west routes, Kursky for several through services, and Riga / Savyolovsky roles depending route and suburban pattern. Do not book a hotel by the word “central” alone. Book by the terminal printed on the ticket.

Central Road Terminal And Intercity Buses

Moscow’s main long-distance bus hub for many routes is the Central road terminal by Shchyolkovskaya. The official terminal site gives the address as Moscow, Shchyolkovskoye Highway 75, urban rail Shchyolkovskaya, and states that it works around the clock. Its contacts page lists phone +7 (495) 269-83-65 and repeats the same address and 24-hour operation.

This terminal is useful for regional and interregional bus routes, but it is not the default choice for every visitor. If there is a fast rail route, rail is usually more comfortable. Use the road terminal when it gives the best direct route, when the destination lacks a convenient train, or when the bus schedule fits better than rail.

Practical rules:

Need What to do
Buy online Use the official terminal site or a trusted ticket platform
International or interregional route Carry the passenger identity document used for booking
Heavy luggage Check storage and luggage rules before arrival
Night departure Confirm terminal entrance, waiting area and urban rail hours
Arrival from urban rail Use Shchyolkovskaya and follow terminal signs

Taxis, Yandex Go And Private Transfers

In Moscow, the taxi answer is app-first. Yandex Go is the most important service for many visitors. The app listing describes ride classes such as Economy, Comfort, Comfort+, Minivan and intercity options. Yandex’s Moscow tariff page also gives a phone request option, +7 (495) 999 99 99, and explains that ride price is communicated in the service interface.

For airports, the safest choices are app, official airport desk, self-service kiosk or prebooked transfer. Sheremetyevo names Yandex Go at the airport. Domodedovo tells passengers to use dedicated service desks or self-service kiosks and warns against direct booking with drivers. This advice matters because airport arrivals are a common place for overpriced offers.

How much should you expect? Live app quotes change by time, traffic, district and car class. For broad budgeting, a current Moscow airport-transfer guide by Russiable gives economy-taxi ranges of roughly 2000 to 4000 rubles from Moscow airports to the city center, and comfort class roughly 4000 to 8000 rubles. Treat those as a planning range, not a fare promise. A short ride from VKO to west Moscow can be less; a late DME trip to north Moscow can be more.

Taxi Planning Table

Trip Typical best choice Planning note
SVO to Belorussky / Tverskaya area Aeroexpress or Yandex Go Rail avoids traffic; taxi wins with luggage
DME to Paveletsky / south center Aeroexpress or route 1185 plus urban rail Taxi is easier late
VKO to Moscow City / west side Urban rail or app taxi Check route by hotel line
ZIA to center Otdykh route, bus 441 or prebooked car Build extra buffer
Rail terminal to hotel Urban rail if direct, taxi if bags are heavy Komsomolskaya can be crowded

Car Rental And Driving

For a city-only trip, car rental is rarely the best Moscow tool. Parking, traffic, winter driving, camera enforcement and the scale of the city make urban rail plus taxi easier. Rent a car only if the trip includes suburban business parks, countryside stays, family visits outside the urban rail/MCD network or a route where rail is not practical.

If renting from an airport, check pickup hours, deposit rules, insurance, card acceptance and whether the hotel has secure parking. For central Moscow hotels, the cost and effort of parking can erase any benefit from the car.

Best Areas To Stay

Area Best for Transport logic
Tverskaya / Pushkinskaya / central ring First visit, restaurants, sightseeing Taxi from airport is easy; urban rail access is strong
Belorussky area SVO and west/north-west rail logic Good if Sheremetyevo timing matters
Paveletsky area DME and southbound routes Practical for Domodedovo and business trips south
Kievsky / Moscow City VKO, business, west Moscow Good for airport and business districts
Komsomolskaya Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Yaroslavl and overnight rail Best rail-terminal base, but busy
Shchyolkovskaya Intercity bus departures Functional, not the best sightseeing base
Airport hotel Late arrival or early departure Choose only when flight timing dominates

For a first Moscow trip, central urban rail access usually matters more than being a few kilometers closer to an airport. For a one-night rail connection, stay by the exact terminal. For a business trip, stay by the meeting district and use taxis for airport legs.

Practical Itineraries

SVO Arrival To Central Hotel

If the hotel is near Belorusskaya, Mayakovskaya, Tverskaya or the Circle line, compare Aeroexpress plus urban rail with Yandex Go. Use rail during heavy traffic hours and taxi late at night. If using taxi, order through Yandex Go or airport desks.

DME Arrival To Paveletsky Side

Use Aeroexpress if Paveletsky is close to the hotel or if you continue by urban rail. Use route 1185 to Domodedovskaya for a cheaper route with light bags. Use taxi for late arrival or northern Moscow hotels.

VKO Arrival To Moscow City

Check the urban rail route first because western Moscow can be convenient from VKO. If the hotel is not near a direct line or if luggage is heavy, take Yandex Go or a prebooked car.

Rail To Saint Petersburg

Use Leningradsky terminal in the Komsomolskaya cluster. Arrive early because the area is crowded and Leningradsky access has had reconstruction-related changes. Keep the ticket terminal name visible in Russian and English if possible.

Intercity Bus Departure

Use the Central road terminal at Shchyolkovskoye Highway 75, urban rail Shchyolkovskaya. Confirm the departure platform, identity-document requirement and luggage rule before leaving the hotel.

Mistakes To Avoid

Do not book a hotel only by distance from “Moscow center.” Moscow is large, and the wrong urban rail line can add more time than a longer but direct route. Do not assume every airport uses the same rail terminal. Do not follow unofficial taxi offers in arrivals. Do not confuse Komsomolskaya urban rail with a single rail terminal; three major terminals sit there. Do not plan a tight transfer from ZIA unless you have checked the exact public route or booked a vehicle.

The strongest Moscow plan is airport code first, rail terminal second, urban rail line third, taxi backup always.

Moscow Transport Hub FAQ

Which Moscow airport is best?

The best airport is usually the one on your flight ticket. SVO is common for international trips, DME works well for the Paveletsky and south side, VKO is useful for west Moscow, and ZIA needs more transfer planning.

How much is taxi from Moscow airport to the center?

For broad budgeting, expect many economy app or taxi trips from major Moscow airports to central areas to fall around 2000 to 4000 rubles, with comfort-class rides often higher. Always check the live app or airport desk quote.

Is Aeroexpress better than taxi in Moscow?

Aeroexpress is better when the rail terminal or urban rail connection is convenient and traffic is heavy. Taxi is better for late arrivals, heavy luggage, children or hotels far from the rail corridor.

What card should I use for Moscow urban rail?

Troika is the standard visitor-friendly fare tool. It works across urban rail, MCC, MCD central-zone travel and ground transit according to Moscow Transport rules.

Where is Moscow’s main intercity bus terminal?

The Central road terminal is at Moscow, Shchyolkovskoye Highway 75, by Shchyolkovskaya urban rail. The terminal contact page lists phone +7 (495) 269-83-65 and 24-hour operation.

Which rail terminal is for Saint Petersburg?

Many Saint Petersburg trains use Leningradsky terminal at the Komsomolskaya rail cluster. Check the terminal printed on your ticket because Moscow has several long-distance rail terminals.

Is Moscow easy without a car?

Yes. For most city trips, urban rail, MCC, MCD, Troika and Yandex Go are easier than renting a car. A car is mainly useful for suburban business parks or regional trips.

Where should I stay for easy transport in Moscow?

First-time visitors usually do best near a central urban rail interchange. For airport-led trips, choose Belorussky for SVO, Paveletsky for DME, Kievsky/Moscow City for VKO, and Komsomolskaya for major rail departures.
