Riga is the main transport gateway for Latvia and one of the easiest Baltic capitals to navigate when the arrival chain is planned correctly. The core anchors are Riga Airport, RIX, west of the city; Rīgas satiksme route 22 and night route N22; Riga Central for domestic rail; Riga International Autoosta at 1 Prāgas Street for domestic and international intercity buses; Bolt and licensed taxis for direct airport movement; and airport rental cars for Jūrmala, Sigulda, Cēsis, Rundāle, Liepāja or a wider Baltic road trip.

The city is compact, but transport decisions are not all the same. Old Town, the Central Market, Riga Central and Autoosta sit close together on the east side of the Daugava. Riga Airport is in Mārupe, across the river, and route 22 is the main low-cost connection. A traveler with a daytime arrival, one bag and a central hotel can often use route 22 for a simple €1.50 advance ticket. A family arriving after midnight, a guest staying in Āgenskalns, Mežaparks or a business hotel away from the centre, or anyone with heavy luggage may prefer Bolt, a licensed taxi, the airport’s voucher product or a pre-booked car.

If You Fly Into RIX

Riga Airport is close enough for a fast car ride and connected enough for a cheap local-transit trip. The official airport transport page names route 22 as the public way between the airport and town centre. RIX also says the city-centre bus stop is in the P1 car park, between arrival exits E and C, with signs in the terminal.

For Old Town, Central Market, Riga Central, Autoosta, the National Library side or many central hotels, route 22 is usually the first option to check. For late-night arrivals, Rīgas satiksme now provides the N22 Centre-Airport service at one-hour intervals. For guests with heavy luggage, children, mobility needs or a hotel outside the centre, compare Bolt, taxi voucher, licensed taxi and private transfer before leaving the arrivals hall.

If You Arrive By Rail

Riga Central is the main rail point for domestic Latvian rail. Vivi is the passenger rail brand to check for live movement, tickets and schedules. The rail station area is directly useful for central hotels, Central Market, Old Town edge stays, Autoosta and tram/trolleybus/bus connections. Construction around Rail Baltica and central station works can affect walking paths, so allow extra time if connecting between rail platforms, Autoosta, taxis and route 22.

Rail is best for Latvian domestic trips such as Jūrmala/Tukums, Jelgava, Sigulda/Cēsis, Valmiera-side routes, Ogre/Aizkraukle and Daugavpils/Rezekne planning when schedules fit. For Tallinn, Vilnius and many international routes, intercity buses are still central to practical planning.

If You Arrive By Intercity Bus

Riga International Autoosta is the main road terminal. The official contact page lists the address as 1 Prāgas Street, Riga, LV-1050. It sits beside Central Market and near Riga Central, so onward movement to Old Town or central hotels can be walked in good weather if luggage is light. In winter, rain or late night, a taxi or Bolt from the terminal curb may be worth it.

Autoosta is important for both Latvian domestic routes and cross-border Baltic routes. For international departures, read the operator ticket carefully: Lux Express, FlixBus, Ecolines and regional operators can have different check-in, platform, luggage and border advice.

Riga Airport RIX

Route 22 To The Centre

Route 22 is the main airport-to-city route. RIX says route 22 serves the airport, and Rīgas satiksme says route 22 is the only route where passengers can also buy a ticket from the driver. The onboard ticket costs €1.81 and can be paid by bank card only. Advance time tickets are cheaper: the Rīgas satiksme fare page lists one 90-minute ticket at €1.50.

The best practical chain is: leave arrivals, follow signs to the route 22 stop in P1, validate the ticket after boarding, and use the central stops that fit your hotel. For Old Town, Central Market and Autoosta, the central segment of the route is usually useful. For hotels north of the centre, east of the rail station or across the river, check the final stop and transfer rather than assuming every central stop is equally convenient.

N22 Night Service

Rīgas satiksme announced night route N22 “Centrs-Lidosta” starting 18 April. The route runs between Stacijas laukums on Marijas iela and Riga Airport at one-hour intervals during the night. This matters because earlier Riga airport advice often treated late-night arrivals as taxi-only. The new night service gives budget travelers a backup, but timing is still thin compared with daytime route 22.

If landing close to the hourly N22 departure, use it. If the wait is long, the weather is poor, or the hotel is not near the route, Bolt or taxi can still be the more practical answer.

Airport Taxi Voucher

RIX lists a taxi voucher product for rides from the airport. The taxi service page says the voucher costs €33.50 and can be purchased at the Visitor Centre in Arrival Hall E. The operating area covers most central hotels and parts of Pārdaugava, with boundaries described by the airport. The voucher gives price certainty, but it is not automatically the cheapest way into the city.

Use the voucher when certainty is more valuable than price shopping: late arrival, no mobile data, business reimbursement, family luggage, or concern about fare disputes. Use Bolt or a licensed metered taxi when you want the app price or a normal city fare and are comfortable checking the pickup point.

Bolt And Licensed Taxi

Bolt’s RIX airport page confirms Bolt is available at Riga Airport and says the app shows pickup points and upfront price before the ride. Bolt’s route page for RIX to Riga Central Station lists Economy around €10.80 and about 18 minutes. LiveRiga’s airport advice gives a broader taxi range of around €10-25, while its taxi page says a typical reasonable airport-to-centre taxi fare is around €18-28 depending on traffic and exact destination.

This spread is normal: app rides can be cheaper off peak, while licensed taxis and voucher products may cost more but reduce uncertainty. Avoid informal offers, check the car identity and fare basis, and use official airport taxi/rideshare areas.

Rīgas Satiksme And Local Transit

Ticket Types And Validation

Riga’s local transit uses buses, trams and trolleybuses. Rīgas satiksme’s time-ticket page lists one 90-minute ticket at €1.50, two tickets at €3.00 and ten tickets at €15.00. LiveRiga also lists useful visitor products: €5.00 for 24 hours, €8.00 for three days, €10.00 for five days and €30.00 for one month.

Rīgas satiksme reminds passengers that 90-minute and monthly tickets must be registered immediately after boarding and every time they transfer to another vehicle. That is the key rule visitors miss: a valid ticket still needs registration on each vehicle. Do not wait until inspection to register.

Choosing Local Routes

Old Town itself is best walked; vehicles use the surrounding streets rather than every medieval lane. For a visitor, the most useful transit jobs are airport route 22, tram/trolleybus/bus corridors from the centre to Art Nouveau areas, Mežaparks, Āgenskalns, the National Library, busier hotel corridors and neighborhoods outside the walkable core.

For a short city stay, a €1.50 time ticket is enough for occasional rides. For a weekend with multiple museum, market and neighborhood trips, the 24-hour, three-day or five-day products can be easier than buying separate rides.

Rail From Riga

Riga Central And Vivi

Vivi is the main passenger rail source to use for domestic Latvia. Its site provides ticket and live train information, including a “where is my train” map. Riga Central is the main rail point in the capital and the natural starting place for Jūrmala/Tukums beach trips, Sigulda/Cēsis day trips, Jelgava, Ogre/Aizkraukle and longer eastern/southern routes where schedules fit.

The central station area is also a hotel strategy. A stay near Riga Central works well for early rail departures, bus departures from Autoosta, Central Market, Old Town edge walks and airport route 22 connections. The tradeoff is construction and traffic around the station area, so choose the exact hotel side carefully.

Rail Baltica Caveat

Rail Baltica work is reshaping the central station and future airport rail access, but current travel should still be planned from the services running now. Do not assume a direct airport rail link is already the normal way to reach the terminal. Today, route 22, N22, taxi, Bolt, car rental and private transfer are the practical airport choices.

When Rail Baltica construction affects station approaches, allow more time for transfers between Riga Central, Autoosta and central tram/bus stops. A five-minute map walk can become longer when temporary pedestrian routes are in place.

Autoosta And Intercity Buses

Riga International Autoosta

Autoosta’s official contact page lists JSC Riga International Autoosta at 1 Prāgas Street, Riga, LV-1050. The terminal is beside Central Market and across the transport core from Riga Central. This is one of Riga’s strongest advantages: rail, market, road departures and Old Town edge stays are all close together.

Use Autoosta for Latvian domestic bus routes and many Baltic/international road routes. For Daugavpils, Liepāja, Ventspils, Kuldīga, Tallinn, Tartu, Vilnius, Kaunas, Warsaw or longer European trips, compare bus and rail by actual departure time, arrival location and luggage rules rather than by distance alone.

Connecting Between Autoosta, Riga Central And Old Town

Autoosta to Riga Central is usually a short walk, but the best path can change with construction and weather. Autoosta to Old Town is also walkable for many travelers; however, cobblestones, winter slush and luggage can make a short ride worthwhile. If connecting from a late bus to an airport flight, use Bolt/taxi rather than assuming route 22 timing will line up.

For international buses, arrive earlier than for a city ride. Platform checks, passport/border expectations, luggage loading and operator announcements can matter, especially on Tallinn, Vilnius, Warsaw and Ukraine-linked services.

Airport To Old Town And Central Riga

For airport-to-centre planning, the useful price ladder is clear. The cheapest normal option is route 22 at €1.50 in advance or €1.81 onboard by bank card. Bolt may show around €10.80 from RIX to Riga Central in the Economy category, depending on demand and conditions. Typical taxi guidance from LiveRiga sits roughly in the €18-28 range for airport to centre. The RIX taxi voucher is €33.50 inside the defined operating area.

That does not mean one option is always best. Route 22 wins on price. Bolt wins on app transparency when pickup is easy. Licensed taxis and vouchers win when you want a queue or fixed airport product. A pre-booked private transfer can be best for large groups, child seats, late-night hotel check-in or a driver waiting with a name board.

Around Riga

Within central Riga, walking and transit cover most visitor needs. Taxis and Bolt are most useful for late nights, heavy luggage, bad weather, cross-river trips, Mežaparks, suburban offices, hospital visits, airport timing and restaurants away from the core. For a short ride, compare the app quote with the inconvenience of waiting for a transfer.

If using a street taxi, check the tariff display and company identity before departure. If using an app, confirm license plate and pickup point. Riga is easy, but airport and nightlife rides are where travelers most often make expensive mistakes.

Car Rental And Driving

Riga does not require a car for a city-only stay. Old Town is walkable, central parking can be annoying, and local transit is cheap. A rental car becomes useful when the itinerary includes Jūrmala outside simple rail plans, Rundāle Palace, Gauja National Park, Cēsis, Sigulda villages beyond the station, Kuldīga, Liepāja, Cape Kolka or a Latvia-Estonia-Lithuania route.

Old Town / Opera / Central Market Edge

Best for first-time visitors, walking, restaurants, route 22 access, Autoosta, Riga Central and short taxi rides. The downside is cobblestones and some pedestrian-only access.

Riga Central / Autoosta Side

Best for early rail, intercity bus departures, budget stays and market access. Choose carefully during construction; a hotel on the wrong side of a temporary works zone can feel less convenient than it looks.

Āgenskalns / National Library / Pārdaugava

Best for a quieter stay, airport-side geography and local atmosphere across the river. Check tram/bus routes and late-night taxi needs.

Airport / Mārupe
