Sinuiju Transport Hub
Sinuiju is North Korea’s most practical border-city transport hub, but it should not be planned like a normal independent city break. It sits across the Yalu/Amnok River from Dandong in China, and for many foreign visitors its transport logic is built around the Dandong-Sinuiju border crossing, Sinuiju Youth Station, the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, customs procedures, arranged tour vehicles and the onward rail or road route toward Pyongyang. Pyongyang Sunan International Airport (FNJ/ZKPY) is the main airport to check for flight-based North Korea itineraries, but Sinuiju’s special role is overland entry and exit.
For transport planning, the first question is not “where is the bus stop?” The first question is whether your nationality, visa, tour operator and current border rules allow the trip. Government travel advice from Canada says foreigners are met by a guide, must be accompanied by an official guide at all times and are prohibited from using public transportation. Australian travel advice says travel within North Korea is severely restricted and only allowed on official tours, with an official guide always accompanying travellers. U.S. State Department advice is stricter for U.S. citizens: regular U.S. passports cannot be used for travel to, in or through North Korea unless specially validated.

Arrival Strategy
Sinuiju has two practical arrival strategies. The first is border-first: start in Dandong, cross the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge by train or approved vehicle, clear procedures in Sinuiju, then either tour Sinuiju for the day or continue toward Pyongyang. The second is Pyongyang-first: fly into Pyongyang Sunan International Airport, join a tour, and add Sinuiju as an extension or exit route by train. Both are controlled itineraries, not independent transport choices.
Koryo Tours describes Sinuiju as accessible either as a day trip from Dandong or as an overnight extension to tours that exit the DPRK by train. KTG says Sinuiju is the capital of North Pyongan province, a border city across the Yalu River from Dandong, and the busiest overland point of entry and exit for tourists entering or leaving Korea by train. That makes Sinuiju different from Wonsan, Nampo or Kaesong: the main transport event is the border process itself.
If entering from Dandong, treat the day around customs. You need the approved tour, correct visa/permit arrangements, a clear meeting point in Dandong, the crossing method, and instructions for baggage and phones. If exiting from Pyongyang, ask whether the Sinuiju stop is only border control or whether there is a true extension with sightseeing and overnight accommodation. Koryo Tours says its Sinuiju extension adds 24 hours and includes a full tour of the city plus an overnight in Dongrim Hotel in the countryside.
Dandong, Bridge and Customs
The Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge is the key physical crossing. Koryo Tours says it runs from Dandong in China to Sinuiju in North Korea and is one of the few borders connecting China and North Korea. It carries both railway and roadway, but pedestrians are not allowed to access it; crossing is by train or vehicle. The bridge crossing itself takes only a few minutes, but the real time cost is immigration, customs, guide handoff and inspection.
Koryo Tours’ Sinuiju day-trip page says travellers are taken by local partners to the customs house, pass out of China, make the roughly 1 km drive across the main road/rail bridge, complete DPRK customs procedures and then meet the local guide. This is a useful operational description because it shows why a self-directed taxi or bus plan is the wrong frame. The border crossing is part of a managed tour sequence.
The older Yalu River Broken Bridge is not a crossing, but it is part of the transport landscape. Koryo Tours says the original bridge connected Dandong with Sinuiju, was bombed during the Korean War and now remains broken, ending in the river. It is useful as a landmark from the Dandong waterfront and as a reminder that the current bridge is the active transport link.
Sinuiju Youth Station and the Dandong-Pyongyang Train
Sinuiju Youth Station is the rail point to understand. TravelChinaGuide’s Dandong-Sinuiju-Pyongyang train page says the Dandong-Pyongyang train resumed daily service from March 12, 2026 and lists a daily pair between Dandong Railway Station and Pyongyang Railway Station. It shows the northbound train leaving Dandong at 10:00, arriving Sinuiju at 11:10, departing Sinuiju at 13:06 and reaching Pyongyang at 18:07. Southbound, it shows Pyongyang at 10:26, Sinuiju at 15:44/17:13 and Dandong at 16:23.
Those times are useful, but they must be treated as planning context. The same page says the train stops for a long time at Sinuiju while North Korean border guards inspect carriages and handle immigration procedures, and that the actual stopping time depends on inspection efficiency. It also notes that the scheduled Sinuiju-Pyongyang sector may take about four hours by timetable but often takes longer. For a visitor, the key lesson is buffer time. Do not build a tight same-day connection in Dandong, Beijing or Pyongyang around a best-case border process.
TravelChinaGuide also gives a rare fare benchmark: Dandong-Sinuiju adult reference fares of CNY 77 for soft sleeper and CNY 70 for hard sleeper, with child fares lower. Use that only as rail-ticket context. A tour may bundle train, guides, entry fees, lunch, vehicle movements, accommodation and permits into a higher package price. Koryo Tours lists its Sinuiju extension with a separate 50 RMB bus-over-border cash cost at the end of the trip, and Young Pioneer Tours lists Sinuiju day trips from Dandong starting from 1900 RMB on its Dandong guide page.
Pack for the station as if inspection will take time. Keep documents, visa paperwork, tour confirmation, phone, camera, medicine and declared electronics easy to access, and follow the guide’s instructions on photographs and device handling. The border stop is not just a timetable pause; it is part of the legal entry or exit process.
Pyongyang Airport and Flight-Based Itineraries
Pyongyang Sunan International Airport is the flight gateway to keep in the Sinuiju article, even though it is not in Sinuiju. OurAirports lists Pyongyang Sunan International Airport with IATA code FNJ, ICAO code ZKPY, large-airport status, airline service and coordinates 39.224098, 125.669998. Air Koryo’s official timetable and flight-status pages are the first airline pages to check for current Pyongyang services.
For a flight-based Sinuiju itinerary, the airport is only the first leg. You would normally arrive in Pyongyang, join the approved tour plan and travel to Sinuiju by rail or arranged road transfer. That is why a simple “airport taxi to Sinuiju” recommendation would be misleading. The distance is large, movement is controlled, and foreign visitors cannot simply choose a local bus or taxi after landing.
If the itinerary says “fly in, train out,” ask exactly where the Sinuiju rail segment begins and ends. Some tours use Beijing or Dandong as the rail gateway; others use Pyongyang first and then the train out through Sinuiju. Ask whether the guide stays with the group through the border, whether luggage is inspected at Sinuiju, and whether Dandong onward arrangements are included.
Day Trips and Overnight Extensions
Sinuiju is one of the few North Korea destinations that can be sold as a short border experience from China. Koryo Tours describes a day trip from Dandong as a way to cross the Yalu/Amnok River, visit Sinuiju’s main city square, revolutionary museum, cosmetics factory, folk park, art gallery and kindergarten, then return to China. Young Pioneer Tours likewise describes its day trip as beginning in the morning by crossing the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge and heading to Sinuiju Central Square for a photo opportunity.
For an overnight extension, the planning is different. Koryo Tours says its Sinuiju extension can add 24 hours to a DPRK tour that exits by train and includes overnight in the countryside Dongrim Hotel. KTG also says its current Sinuiju program is combined with Dongrim Town, with a bumpy but interesting drive through villages, old bridges and rural areas. That means “Sinuiju hotel” may not mean a hotel in the city centre; it may mean Dongrim or another operator-selected accommodation.
When comparing day trip and overnight options, ask what transport is included. Koryo Tours says its fee includes all transportation into and around Sinuiju, guide costs excluding tips, entry fees and lunch, but it notes that the 50 RMB bus over the border to Dandong at the end is not included. This kind of small cash detail matters because you cannot simply solve a missing transfer with ordinary local transport.
Local Movement, Buses and Taxis
For foreign visitors, local movement in Sinuiju is guide-controlled. Canada’s travel advice says foreigners are prohibited from using public transportation and must be accompanied by an official guide at all times. Australia’s advice says North Korea does not allow independent tourism and that authorities only allow tourism in groups organised by North Korean officials or approved travel agencies. It also says tour operators or sponsors usually provide road transportation.
So the practical “bus station” for a visitor is not a public terminal. It is the vehicle plan in the itinerary: the Dandong border bus or car, the local Sinuiju tour vehicle, the train through Sinuiju Youth Station, or an arranged onward road transfer. If the trip includes factories, museums, parks, restaurants or Dongrim, assume each stop is scheduled and escorted.
Taxi planning also needs restraint. There is no reliable public taxi tariff to publish for foreign visitors in Sinuiju. Australian advice says charges for travel can be high and arbitrary, including taxis, hire vehicles, guides, tolls and permits. Ask the operator to state every transport cost in writing: border bus, city vehicle, overnight transfer, guide time, driver fee, tolls, permits, tips and any late-change vehicle cost.
Best Areas to Stay
Dandong is the best base if the goal is a short Sinuiju day trip. It has the practical rail station, riverfront, bridge access and China-side hotels. Koryo Tours says Dandong train station is about a 10-15 minute walk from the Yalu River and the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, which makes it the logical pre- and post-crossing base.
Sinuiju city centre is the sightseeing base when the tour includes central square, the railway station area, museum, art gallery, kindergarten and local restaurant stops. Koryo Tours notes that Sinuiju’s main city square was modernised in 2015 and is bounded by the local museum and railway station. This is a guided-tour area, not a free hotel-district recommendation.
Dongrim is the overnight-extension base to watch for. Koryo Tours mentions overnight in Dongrim Hotel for its Sinuiju extension, and KTG says Sinuiju tours are combined with Dongrim Town. If the accommodation is outside central Sinuiju, confirm the drive time, road condition and whether the next morning returns to Sinuiju, Dandong or Pyongyang.
Pyongyang is the base when Sinuiju is part of an exit route. If the itinerary is Beijing-Pyongyang by air and Pyongyang-Dandong by train, Sinuiju may be the customs and optional extension point rather than the main overnight stay. In that case, pack and schedule as if the Sinuiju stop could be long but not independent.
First-Time Checklist
- Confirm whether your nationality can currently enter North Korea and whether Sinuiju day trips or extensions are operating.
- If you are a U.S. citizen, check the special-validation passport rule before any planning.
- Confirm whether your trip starts in Dandong, Pyongyang or another approved point.
- Ask whether you cross the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge by train, approved vehicle or tour bus.
- Build buffer time for Sinuiju customs and border inspection.
- Ask whether Sinuiju Youth Station is a real boarding/alighting point or only a border-control stop.
- Put all vehicle, guide, toll, permit, taxi and border-bus costs in writing.
- Do not plan to use local public transport, independent taxis or unsupervised walks unless your guide explicitly authorizes the movement.
