Warsaw Transport Guide: Airports, Tickets and Trains

Start with the airport code, the exact station and your hotel address. Those three details turn Warsaw’s buses, trams, metro and railways into a useful travel plan. This guide connects the first airport transfer with city sightseeing and the next train to Poland or another country.

Researched and updated 7 September 2026. Prices below are dated adult standard-fare references in Polish złoty (PLN), not a ticket quotation. Routes, access arrangements and offers can change; use the linked operator for your travel date.

YOUR JOURNEY, IN THE RIGHT ORDER

Arrival → exact station or stop → hotel → your Warsaw day. WAW and WMI are different airports. Centralna, Śródmieście and Śródmieście WKD are different stations. A railway platform and a coach bay are not the same boarding point.

For the next decision, open our luxury, mid-range and budget hotel guide or five mapped Warsaw walks.

Warsaw public transport tickets: what to buy

WTP is the city transport network; ZTM is its organising authority. SKM uses the same city tariff as buses, trams and the metro. Choose both the time allowance and the required zones. KM and WKD are separate operators with specific ticket-honouring rules.

Useful standard fares, checked 7 September 2026
Ticket Zone PLN
20 minutes 1 + 2 3.40
75 minutes 1 4.40
90 minutes 1 + 2 7.00
24 hours 1 15.00
24 hours 1 + 2 26.00
3 days 1 36.00
3 days 1 + 2 57.00
Weekend 1 + 2 24.00
Group weekend, up to 5 people 1 + 2 40.00

The weekend validity window is Friday 19:00 to Monday 08:00. A 24-hour ticket runs from validation, not simply until midnight. Source: Warsaw Tourism Office’s ticket table; confirm the WTP tariff before buying. Discounts require the appropriate entitlement and documentation; do not assume a foreign student card qualifies.

The train exception that matters

A 75-minute city ticket is not a general KM or WKD ticket. The integrated offer normally starts with day tickets and applies only within defined boundaries. There is a specific exception on KM’s RL between Warszawa Lotnisko Chopina and Warszawa Płudy, where all ZTM ticket types are honoured within their validity. That does not cover the remaining journey to Modlin.

On WKD, qualifying integrated tickets cover Warszawa Śródmieście WKD–Opacz; 20-, 75- and 90-minute ZTM tickets are not accepted. Check the City of Warsaw’s integrated-ticket rules and boundary map for the actual service.

Activate, do not merely purchase. Follow the ticket’s instructions immediately on boarding or before entering the metro paid area. SKM says its onboard machines issue already-validated tickets, while mobile tickets require the train’s QR code. Buying early in a train waiting to depart can start the clock early. See the official SKM ticket FAQ; do not extrapolate one operator’s activation method to every ticket product.

Chopin Airport to Warsaw: WAW

Chopin’s railway station is Warszawa Lotnisko Chopina. Compare the dated S2, S3 and KM RL services by the station they actually serve. Do not board simply because the display says “Warszawa”: a train that suits Śródmieście is not automatically the right one for a Centralna connection.

The airport lists city buses including 175 and night service N32. Check the current stop, direction and route before departure; disruption notices can override a familiar line’s usual path. Our Chopin arrival guide gives the wider airport context. Then consult the airport’s transport page and the WTP journey information.

For a central-hotel arrival, compare the complete journey: terminal walk, wait, ride, any transfer and the last walk with luggage. SKM specifically warns that the airport–Centralna trip takes longer than 20 minutes; a 20-minute ticket is not the right shortcut for that journey. A valid longer ticket still needs to match the selected operator and route.

Landing time is not a dependable departure time from the airport. Passport checks, baggage and finding the platform can vary. For a flight-to-train connection, first decide when you can realistically leave the terminal, then add time to locate the train at the correct Warsaw station.

Modlin Airport to Warsaw: WMI

Modlin railway station is not the airport terminal. The rail option is a train to or from Modlin station plus the KM airport shuttle. The airport describes that connection; confirm the timetable’s validity dates rather than using an expired PDF. Planned future airport rail infrastructure is not a service you can board today.

Train plus shuttle: the KM Airport Ticket

The linked Polish offer and its official Table 55 list 22.40 PLN for the one-way Warsaw–Modlin airport train-and-bus product, and 7.10 PLN for the shuttle alone. The combined ticket also provides 75 minutes of Zone 1 city travel on its validity day, starting at the time recorded in the designated field.

Check the current KM Airport Ticket page and KM ticket seller before purchase. We use the operator’s linked Polish tariff, not the older English page still displaying lower amounts. The shuttle driver does not sell tickets.

The airport ticket does not itself open metro gates; KM explains the lift or free-entry-ticket options. Keep the ticket and its correctly recorded city-travel start time available for inspection. A normal Zone 1 or Zones 1+2 city ticket alone is not a substitute for the complete Modlin transfer.

For direct coaches, compare your dated flight with the actual city stop and cancellation conditions. A late arrival may leave a taxi or pre-arranged transfer as the practical alternative, but no fixed taxi price is promised here. Read our Modlin arrival guide before selecting accommodation for an early WMI departure.

Warsaw railway stations: choose the one on your ticket

Warszawa Centralna

The central long-distance station is at Aleje Jerozolimskie 54. Nearby Śródmieście suburban platforms, Śródmieście WKD and Centrum metro are separate destinations. Read our Centralna station guide, then check the departure board using the train number as well as the destination.

Warszawa Zachodnia

The railway information address is Aleje Jerozolimskie 142; the coach terminal is a separate boarding area. Do not treat a map pin for “Warsaw West” as a platform entrance. A rail-to-coach change needs time for moving between the two. Start with our Zachodnia railway guide and verify the current access route.

Warszawa Wschodnia

PKP identifies the long-distance side at Kijowska 20 and the suburban side at Lubelska 24. Choose your pickup or hotel approach accordingly. Importantly, PKP warns that platform access does not provide an adequate level of service for reduced-mobility passengers; an adapted station building does not prove step-free boarding. Read our Wschodnia guide and confirm assistance with the operator.

Official references: PKP station information offices and Wschodnia passenger/accessibility information. Station facilities and their opening hours are separate from train service hours.

Build a station margin into the journey

Work backwards from the train’s departure, not from the moment a tram reaches the area. Our planning starting point is 30 minutes at an unfamiliar departure station; use more for luggage, assistance, a coach transfer or uncertainty. This is editorial advice, not an operator minimum or a connection guarantee.

A pedestrian route to a station coordinate can stop outside the wrong entrance. Check the station plan, lifts, platform number and any revised access signs. If your ticket names Warszawa Gdańska or another Warsaw station, use that exact station instead of substituting Centralna.

Warsaw as a rail hub: Berlin, Prague, Vienna and Vilnius

Choose the international train before fixing the city transfer. Search in the direction you will travel, with the exact date and destination station. Compare departure station, changes, reservation, baggage and the arrival time shown in the destination’s local time. A line on a network map is not an available seat.

Berlin, Germany

DB confirms direct Berlin–Warsaw services. Check your Warsaw-to-Berlin date and the actual Berlin station; do not assume every result calls at Hauptbahnhof. Compare the current journey and engineering notices using Deutsche Bahn’s route page and booking search.

Prague, Czechia

Search for Praha hlavní nádraží / Praha hl.n. ČD describes EuroCity and overnight options between the countries, but its general country page is not a dated timetable. Review whether your result is a through service or requires a change, and whether the offered ticket can be issued for a journey starting in Poland. Use ČD’s Poland information and its connection search; compare PKP Intercity where appropriate.

Vienna, Austria

For daytime options, search Warszawa–Wien Hauptbahnhof for your date. ÖBB’s Nightjet site also describes the EuroNight connection linking Warsaw and Kraków with Vienna and Munich. A seat, couchette and sleeper are different products: verify the actual carriage and availability in the booking result. Consult ÖBB’s Poland night-train page; do not assume every route uses the newest Nightjet rolling stock.

Vilnius, Lithuania

You must change trains at Mockava. LTG Link explicitly describes this as a connecting journey, even when a planner presents one combined service. Its whole-journey ticket is available through LTG Link or PKP Intercity. Follow the transfer instructions and check the local arrival time; the Lithuanian clock differs from Warsaw’s. Use LTG Link’s official Poland connection for current arrangements, not an assumption that you remain in one carriage.

Before buying across borders, verify your travel documents and current entry requirements. Check whether you have one through ticket or separate tickets and what the seller says about a missed connection. Allow more time when a late arrival would strand you overnight. This guide does not determine individual immigration eligibility or ticket protection.

Continuing within Poland

For a wider Polish trip, compare dated rail journeys to Kraków Główny, Gdańsk Główny, Wrocław Główny or the Łódź station that fits your destination. Check the last city leg at the other end too. A low train fare can be a poor match if the arrival station leaves a difficult late-night transfer. Consider a car for a genuinely dispersed itinerary, not automatically for a compact Warsaw city break.

Coaches, taxis and late arrivals

Long-distance coaches can use different Warsaw stops. FlixBus’s official Warsaw stop list and maps distinguish Warsaw West from other city and airport locations. Match the address and boarding bay on your ticket. Our Warsaw West coach-station guide is the starting context, not proof that your bus departs there.

For a taxi or ride-hailing trip, check the full destination address, the vehicle and the pickup instructions in the service you choose. Compare the actual quote, luggage space and any child-seat requirement. Avoid unsolicited transport offers inside arrivals or stations. Our Warsaw safety guide explains arrival precautions and where to get help.

At night, look for a dated night-bus journey rather than assuming the daytime metro or tram runs. Keep a fallback and know when hotel reception closes. A small apparent saving is not useful if it depends on catching an unverified last service after baggage collection.

For a very early flight, plan backwards from the airline’s required airport-arrival time. Add the ride, access walk and a realistic buffer; do not subtract only the advertised driving time from takeoff. WMI accommodation and a central Warsaw hotel solve different problems.

Hotels: choose the connection as well as the category

Our nine-hotel guide across seven areas separates editorial comfort categories from nightly prices. Compare the same dates, guest count, room, meals and cancellation terms. Higher category does not automatically mean easier transport.

  • Luxury: compare central InterContinental with Raffles near the Royal Route; choose for the day you want, not just the star label.
  • Mid-range comfort: compare Polonia Palace, PURO Old Town, Moxy Praga and Courtyard at WAW. The airport option is most relevant when the flight drives your schedule.
  • Budget-minded: compare ibis Old Town, ibis budget Centrum and ibis budget Warszawa West Station. Similar brand names do not imply the same address or transfer.

Connect transport with your Warsaw sightseeing day

  1. Choose one main visit. Use our museum hours, admissions and free-day guide, then follow that museum’s official visitor link. A closed museum cannot be fixed by a faster route.
  2. Build the walk around it. Our Old Town, Powiśle, Łazienki, Praga and culture-trail walks include ordered stops and maps. Keep the last stop close to your next useful connection instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
  3. Plan the practical breaks. Locate a toilet, somewhere to sit and a food option before a long outdoor section. A map marker does not guarantee that a facility is open, free or step-free when you arrive.
  4. Keep an indoor alternative. Use our seasonal planning guide for the wider choice of dates, but check the current forecast for today’s walk.

A guided experience is a separate booking. Read its meeting point, language, walking demands, admission inclusions and late-arrival policy. Our walking guide explains the GetYourGuide Old Town alternative alongside Viator choices. Your route must reach the booked meeting point, not merely the nearest famous landmark.

Example: a train before a museum

If you arrive by rail, check whether the hotel will store luggage before check-in. Then choose a museum entry you can reach without rushing, with time for the station exit and the museum entrance. If leaving Warsaw that evening, keep the final outing near a useful transport connection and protect your station margin. This is a planning pattern, not a promised same-day itinerary.

Warsaw transport: practical questions

Which Warsaw airport should I plan for?

Use the code on your booking: Chopin is WAW and Modlin is WMI. Compare the full cost and timing of reaching your actual hotel before deciding that the cheaper flight is the cheaper trip.

Does the train go directly to Modlin Airport?

Not in the connection described here. You change between the train and KM shuttle at Modlin railway station. A planned future airport station does not remove today’s bus leg.

What is a useful city ticket for a visitor?

The table above lists the main standard fares. Choose by your actual zones and time, then check rail exceptions. A day ticket can simplify repeated rides; the cheapest short ticket is not always sufficient for an airport journey.

Is Centralna always the right railway station?

No. Use the exact station in your dated itinerary and on your ticket. Check the train number and current platform at that station, and allow time to find the correct entrance.

Do all intercity buses leave from Warsaw West?

No. Operators use multiple Warsaw stops. Read the boarding address, map and bay information on the particular booking before planning the city connection.

Should I choose a taxi or public transport?

Compare the whole trip for your party, luggage and arrival time. Use a licensed or correctly identified booked vehicle. This guide does not promise a fixed app fare or that a car always saves time.

Is Warsaw–Vilnius a direct train?

LTG Link requires a change at Mockava. Treat a combined ticket or a single service label in a planner as distinct from staying in the same carriage.

Sources and how to use this guide

The operator links beside each section support the factual details. The fares were cross-checked against WTP’s own tariff and the city Tourism Office; SKM and Warsaw 19115 clarify railway exceptions. KM’s currently linked Polish offer and Table 55 resolve the conflicting older English prices. General international route pages describe possibilities; exact trains, seats and fares must be checked for the travel date.

Way4I’s recommendations about hotels, buffers and sightseeing pace are editorial judgments, not first-hand inspection claims, live service guarantees or rankings purchased by partners.
